Chapter 19: Going to Meet Her Ex-Girlfriend?
Shu Qingyou wasn’t tricking her. She deliberately drove her to a decent restaurant in the city.
But this was the result of Lin Xu’s hour-long melancholy. Her tear glands seemed controlled by Shu Qingyou’s switch. A few simple words could break her down.
“How do you use a 36-degree mouth to say such cruel sentences?”
Lin Xu cried and accused, crumpling tissue after tissue, sobbing like a pear blossom in the rain.
She wondered if Shu Qingyou had a heart of iron. She was already humbled to the dust, yet Shu Qingyou let her cry alone.
In the back, Shu Rong lost her playful mood due to Lin Xu’s sudden noise, staring blankly at her mom and the bad sister.
The bad sister’s tears were even more than hers. Shu Rong secretly rejoiced. Mom was amazing at handling the bad sister.
Shu Qingyou finally gave in to overflowing sympathy. Besides, in front of her daughter, it was a bit embarrassing for an adult.
She led her to the bathroom and turned on the faucet.
“Don’t cry. Wash your face. I’ll take you to eat later.”
Lin Xu stubbornly shook off the hand on her arm. The sound of water didn’t hide her extreme dissatisfaction.
“You’re treating me like three-year-old Shu Rong! I’m so mad I’m full. You said you’d help me recover my memory, but you’re lying!”
“But you did recover your memory last night.”
As for this morning, when Lin Xu turned back into a carefree, happy puppy-like college girl, Shu Qingyou wasn’t in the mood to appreciate the ups and downs. She considered herself normal and found it hard to stay calm.
One way today, tomorrow back to her unrepentant old self, not much different from a split personality.
Yet Lin Xu had no memory of it. Shu Qingyou reminded her not to waste water.
Lin Xu lowered her head, scooping warm water with both hands. The hot liquid splashed her cheeks, wetting her bangs.
With her wet face, she made herself look pitiful, swearing, “You bullied me, so you’re responsible.”
“That doesn’t count. Today’s me is me, yesterday’s me was yesterday’s. A person can’t step into the same river twice.”
Her intelligence was intact. Shu Qingyou raised an eyebrow, amused by her seemingly serious philosophical logic.
“Then I’m not me anymore either.”
Now it was Lin Xu’s turn to be stunned for a moment. Water droplets clung to her eyelashes, some sticking together, sparkling brightly.
“Yesterday’s me didn’t plan to let you go home. Today’s me has changed.”
“You make conclusions centered on yourself without considering me.”
Shu Qingyou was used to taking care of Lin Xu, treating her like a big child. She gently wiped Lin Xu’s face with a towel.
“Don’t argue with me. I won’t change my decision just because you try to please me.”
Did that mean Shu Qingyou was going to abandon her? The thought of never seeing Shu Qingyou again was like a bucket of cold water poured over her.
Her mind buzzed with confusion. She grabbed Shu Qingyou’s wrist urgently, stepping forward and pushing her against the bathroom wall.
Lin Xu didn’t dare use too much force, resting her palm behind Shu Qingyou’s head. Her hot breath mirrored her mindset, desperate to cling to Shu Qingyou.
Coincidentally, Lin Xu gripped the spot where Shu Qingyou had an old scar.
It hadn’t hurt for a long time, but the psychological effect made it feel like phantom pain.
Now, roughly handled by Lin Xu, she lowered her eyelids, frowning, ignoring the dull pain in her wrist.
Shu Qingyou couldn’t help but recall last night when Lin Xu tore off the suppression patch. Her gaze lingered on Lin Xu’s neck.
The smooth skin and small white gland swelled, with a faint pink at the opening.
From Lin Xu’s eager demeanor, the gland showed signs of expanding, about to release a floral pheromone.
“Sister Shu, tell me, did I do something terribly stupid last night that made you want to kick me out without explanation?”
Lin Xu’s breath was hot, her low voice brushing past Shu Qingyou’s ear, sending a tingling sensation to her ear tips.
“No, you were normal.”
The lukewarm response made Lin Xu object.
“No way! I had a dream where I bullied you.”
Shu Qingyou was wary of their position. She looked down at her slippers, avoiding Lin Xu’s gaze.
This fool still hadn’t remembered. She said softly, “Dreams are the opposite.”
“It’s real! Daydreams are the opposite.”
Pinned against the wall, what could Shu Qingyou say?
Lin Xu felt a one-sided frustration. She held Shu Qingyou’s jaw. Shu Qingyou didn’t resist, but a faint scorn passed through her eyes.
A quiet pang hit Lin Xu’s heart. Her eyes reddened, and she tightly kissed Shu Qingyou’s beautiful cherry lips.
She restrained her grip, but her thumb had its own agenda, rubbing against the full lower lip.
“Sister Shu, what did I do? Please, don’t hide it from me.”
The past replayed. Lin Xu loved acting superior, looking down on others as insignificant tools for her amusement.
Her fingertips carried thick desire, signaling she wanted to kiss. Shu Qingyou knew it all too well.
How long until Lin Xu kissed her?
Her throat moved. Lin Xu’s misty eyes were filled with a sweet scent so close, yet she felt like a lost boat, the distant lighthouse dim and lightless.
Time ticked by. Shu Rong grew worried, standing outside the locked bathroom door, unable to push it open.
She knocked with her little hands, rhythmically, careful not to disturb her mom.
Lin Xu snapped back, eyes red, and released her hold.
Shu Qingyou lifted her gaze, cold as an autumn night’s moon, emotionless, her usual warmth gone.
“Lin Xu, can you be more mature?”
Her lips pressed into a straight line. Lin Xu gritted her teeth, silent, then yanked the door open. Shu Rong, clinging to the door, stumbled and fell onto Lin Xu’s thigh.
Lin Xu glanced down, forcing a smile. This little thing was protective of her mom.
“Don’t worry, only your mom gets to mess with me. Don’t block the way.”
After that, Lin Xu sat quietly in the passenger seat, her cried-out eyes still showing resentment.
As winter neared, the sky turned lead-gray, the open skyline echoing with bird calls and wilted flowers and grass.
Shu Qingyou stayed silent. The closer they got to the city, the more Lin Xu couldn’t bear it.
She muttered, hurt and helpless, “Are you taking me to the police station, like when you joked about selling me to your teacher?”
She didn’t expect Lin Xu to hold a grudge over a small joke.
She didn’t reply directly. When they stopped at a red light, she explained patiently.
“First, I promised to take you to eat. Second, my teacher’s wife is a painter who sometimes looks for young girls like you as models.”
Realizing it was a misunderstanding, Lin Xu said “oh” and continued accusing confidently.
“Once your teacher finds out the reason, you’ll ditch me.”
Was she trying to make her feel guilty? She was half-right. Shu Qingyou wasn’t ditching her, but they’d eventually part ways. Forgetting each other sooner was better for both.
“Are you afraid of facing things alone, or…”
Lin Xu stopped talking. Could she say she couldn’t bear to leave? Could she say she fell for her at first sight and wanted to see her face every day?
To stay mature, she’d talk less, like Shu Qingyou, keeping her mouth shut stubbornly.
Shu Qingyou’s place wasn’t far from the city. At the restaurant, she asked what Lin Xu wanted to eat, but Lin Xu refused to speak.
So she ordered for her. Shu Rong loved sweets, and her eyes lit up at the strawberry cake, her cheeks puffing contentedly.
Lin Xu glanced over. Just an ordinary cake, was it worth gobbling up like that?
“Rongrong looks as thin as a matchstick.”
“She’s a bit picky.”
Shu Qingyou cared deeply for Shu Rong but controlled her nutrition balance. Lin Xu thought, forget a daughter, even for a pet, she’d buy piles of its favorite food.
Soon, fragrant meat and vibrant green vegetables filled the table. Lin Xu was instantly drawn to the high-calorie American fried chicken and its side of ice cream.
In no time, the vanilla ice cream was all in Lin Xu’s stomach.
As for the fried chicken, Lin Xu held back briefly, asking reservedly, “You and Shu Rong didn’t eat the fried chicken. Don’t you like it?”
Shu Qingyou chewed her vegetables slowly, swallowed, and glanced at the sauce on Lin Xu’s lips.
“Don’t waste it. Those are your responsibility.”
Though Lin Xu didn’t say it, she’d lingered on the fried chicken picture in the menu for two seconds.
With that, Lin Xu ate most of the food without hesitation.
“Eat slowly. We’re not fighting you for it.”
Shu Qingyou used a wet wipe to clean sauce from Lin Xu’s mouth, finding it odd. What kind of tough life had Lin Xu lived before?
Lin Xu froze. Shu Qingyou had done this natural act more than once. Her eyes stayed on the plastic gloves holding the fried chicken.
She panicked. Had she and Shu Qingyou been that close before?
Like ants on a hot pan, her face flushed, heart racing. She took the wipe, voice shrinking.
“Sister Shu, I…”
“Hm?”
Shu Qingyou showed no intent beyond friendliness.
“Nothing. I’ll do it myself.”
She wiped her lips dejectedly, sipped the fragrant barley tea, and lost her appetite, constantly glancing at Shu Qingyou.
Checking the time, Shu Qingyou opened the navigation. They still had a bit to drive.
Noticing Lin Xu’s probing gaze, she said lightly, “Not full? If you want more, it’ll have to be takeout.”
Shu Qingyou’s lukewarm attitude made Lin Xu hold back questions. She shook her head, saying she was full, and casually asked about the price.
Lin Xu, lacking security with money, was extra sensitive. She even wondered if supporting her was too costly, so Shu Qingyou abandoning her made sense.
Once this feeling grew, she couldn’t help checking the bill. Her heart sank. This meal cost nearly two thousand.
Lin Xu instantly became gloomy.
“Stomachache?”
Buckling her seatbelt, Shu Qingyou turned and saw Lin Xu clutching her stomach with a long face.
“No, I’m just thinking, Sister Shu, is your life usually tight, or maybe frugal?”
The navigation chimed. Shu Qingyou replied naturally.
“If you’re worried about my finances, don’t be. I can at least support Rongrong.”
In the year with Lin Xu, she helped clear Shu Qingyou’s debts. Through Lin Xu and her teacher’s connections, Shu Qingyou sold some artwork for income.
She could easily cash out a million in severance, but initially, she felt that spending it would truly end things with Lin Xu.
After the marking surgery, free of dependency, she distanced herself from that million, never touching it.
Why mention the kid? Lin Xu checked the phone’s destination. It wasn’t the way home.
“Are we meeting someone else?”
“A friend.”
For some reason, Lin Xu felt wary. “Who?”
“Ex-girlfriend.”
