Chapter 5: Can These Days Let People Live in Peace?
Children in small groups were immediately drawn by the sound, running out with thumping steps to watch.
She only glanced outside, snorting with disdain. It was just a car.
Lin Xu didn’t care, but there were always those who hadn’t seen much and were amazed.
It was an aurora purple sports car, parked impressively in front of a farmhouse with green tiles and white walls.
Anyone with eyes could vaguely tell the car was expensive, its presence commanding.
Even more eye-catching was the woman who got out of the car.
She had striking red wavy hair, high-waisted jeans hugging her rounded hips, and a black leather jacket draped loosely over her shoulders, looking both charming and lazy.
She took off her sunglasses, dangling them on her pinky finger, her eyes full of impatience.
Looking around, she felt even more annoyed.
An elderly man with gray hair pushed through the nearby crowd, approaching with a beaming smile.
“Miss Gu, your visit truly honors our village. Sorry, I just got the notice, and I kept you waiting.”
He gestured eagerly, saying, “Come, come, this way.”
Then he instructed a young man following behind.
“Keep an eye on Miss Gu’s car!”
Gu Huaiyuan傲慢地撅了下嘴角. She didn’t care for such pleasantries.
If her private investigator hadn’t found out that Lin Xu got into a sedan and ended up in this village, she wouldn’t have come here under the pretense of investing.
The Lin Corporation appeared prosperous on the outside, with rising stocks and leading industries, its annual financial reports impressive.
But since Old Lady Lin fell ill this year, a power vacuum emerged within the family.
With that vacuum, factional struggles within the family grew fiercer, each side scheming.
Lin Xu had followed Old Lady Lin’s wishes and got engaged to her, tying the Lin and Gu families closely.
Now, with Lin Xu mysteriously missing, the Lin family—especially her greedy uncle—was eyeing Lin Xu’s CEO position and shares.
Whenever Gu Huaiyuan thought about her family urging her to quickly marry Lin Xu publicly, she felt so frustrated she could flip a table.
She was a top-tier Omega. Why should she bow to Lin Xu, that arrogant narcissist? Who would like her?
The two didn’t get along but had to pretend to be loving in front of their elders for family interests.
Here, the village chief kept discussing road repairs, tourism projects, and related investments.
He kept shaking his head, saying project funds couldn’t be approved, and so on.
Gu Huaiyuan let it go in one ear and out the other. Wasn’t it just a fancy way of asking for money?
Her gaze fell on the tea. It didn’t impress her.
The cup, however, was nice, with cracked ice patterns and a lang red glaze, not like something mass-produced.
The village chief looked surprised, saying it was made by an old man in their village.
Seeing Miss Gu look at it longer, he started to flatter.
“Miss Gu has good taste. This was made by an old potter in our village.”
“Who?”
The village chief eagerly added, “Her surname was Shu. She passed away about half a year ago, but the car owner you asked about is her granddaughter.”
Gu Huaiyuan had little interest in pottery. She had seen a tea set in Lin Xu’s office glass cabinet.
It wasn’t used for guests, just for her own admiration.
Boring.
Gu Huaiyuan flicked her long hair. “What are we waiting for? Lead the way.”
The main road outside was decent concrete, but inside, it was all weeds and muddy paths. Gu Huaiyuan found it hard to judge.
She was seriously considering funding road repairs for the village.
Meanwhile, Shu Qingyou repeatedly assured her sister she wouldn’t fall for Lin Xu again, so Shu Wanning agreed to go look for her.
After all, Lin Xu was in a Schrödinger’s state of innocence or not. If she got lost, they’d be fully responsible.
“Tch, it’d be better if she was gone,” Shu Wanning said, putting on her shoes and grumbling as she left.
She happened to see a few people escorting a striking woman toward her.
She stood with her arms crossed, frowning warily.
“Who are you all?”
Her pretty face showed clear displeasure. These people seemed up to no good.
If her sister hadn’t missed their grandmother, they wouldn’t have come to stay here temporarily.
The transportation wasn’t even that convenient.
The village chief glared at Shu Wanning.
“No manners! This is Miss Gu from the Gu Corporation!”
As if it were the old society, Shu Wanning scanned this lofty Miss Gu up and down, rolling her eyes.
“You mean I have to kneel to welcome this Miss Gu for barging into my home?”
The village chief’s old face couldn’t take it.
“Hey, it’s not that. How can a college student like you be so rude?”
Shu Wanning was fed up with their fake politeness and pushed past them, ignoring them.
But a strong grip pulled her back, and a spoiled female voice spoke in her ear.
“You’re the one who brought Lin Xu home. Where is she? Take me to her.”
So she was here for Lin Xu. Shu Wanning’s mind stirred, pretending not to know.
“Yeah, she fainted on the road. I did a good deed, but she didn’t repay the kindness. She ran off long ago.”
She looked at the hands holding her, with round, tender fingertips.
A delicate pair of hands, never touched by housework, looking noble.
Shu Wanning noticed the woman cared a lot about Lin Xu and guessed she was one of Lin Xu’s admirers. She yanked her hand free.
When she saw the woman wobble slightly in her high heels, Shu Wanning scoffed, wanting to get rid of the uninvited guest quickly.
“Don’t come back. She’s not here.”
Gu Huaiyuan was very dissatisfied with this outcome.
Used to being treated like a star, she had never been ignored like this.
She lifted her high heel and stomped hard on Shu Wanning’s shoe, instantly dirtying the white sneaker and causing sharp pain.
Shu Wanning’s face twisted in pain, and she was furious.
She grabbed the woman’s hair.
“Crazy woman! If you’re mental, go to a mental hospital!”
These rich people had nothing better to do—one harassed her sister, and now this troublemaker showed up.
“Stinking Beta, do you want to die?!”
Gu Huaiyuan was shorter, and struggling only made her scalp hurt more from the pull.
“Let go! Damn it, ahhh!”
The village chief, sweating coldly, was shocked. He never knew the new college student was so tough.
Like a powder keg, she wouldn’t take any slight. He rushed to stop the fight.
Everyone around was stunned. Who was Miss Gu, after all?
This mere college student had some nerve to act like this!
“Little Shu, let go, let go, let go. I beg you, old man. We’re just here to find someone, no bad intentions!”
Seeing the village chief’s desperate look, Shu Wanning let go freely.
She raised an eyebrow and sneered, “I know where Lin Xu is. Want to know? I won’t tell you.”
Sure enough, under Gu Huaiyuan’s fiery glare, Shu Wanning added fuel to the fire.
“And I also know Lin Xu already has someone she likes. Don’t even think about it.”
Before Gu Huaiyuan could process the news of Lin Xu liking someone, Shu Wanning had already slipped away.
“Stinking Beta, stop right there!”
To deliver food on time, Shu Wanning had trained her legs well, even placing second in a 3,000-meter race.
She was really hard to catch.
Gu Huaiyuan, mocked thoroughly, gave the village chief a cold shoulder the whole time.
No matter how much he pleaded, even if his knees gave out, it was useless.
Gu Huaiyuan gracefully got into her sports car, put on her sunglasses, and with the low hum of the engine, drove off.
Only the dust from the car’s rear lingered.
Suddenly, she remembered her private investigator and angrily made a call.
“Check on a potter named Shu in Haicheng and get all her family’s details.”
Lin Xu was still lost in her aimless wandering.
She looked at the mountains, the small bridges, and the flowing water, then cheerfully watched dogs fight.
After brief happiness, her stomach and heart both felt empty.
Should she apologize to Shu Qingyou? She seemed physically frail.
“Sigh, where do I go from here?”
Lost in self-pity, someone tapped her shoulder.
“You planning to jump? Let me tell you, this water’s too shallow to drown in.”
Lin Xu turned, scalp tightening, instantly taking a defensive stance.
“What do you want?”
Shu Wanning gave her an eye-roll.
“I’ll say this once: I agreed to let you stay at our place.”
“Who knows if you’ve got bad intentions?”
Lin Xu kept a safe distance, checking if Shu Wanning carried any deadly weapons.
Inviting Lin Xu out of kindness, and she was so ungrateful!
Shu Wanning frowned the whole time, rubbing her temples. Lin Xu was a big hassle.
Who knew if their home would be bothered by more of Lin Xu’s messy admirers?
Her patience was nearly gone.
“Stay or don’t, I don’t care if you go wander. I’d be happy, as long as you don’t pester my sister.”
Lin Xu slowly lowered her guard, touching her stomach and asking softly.
“I’ll go back, but I’m hungry.”
“Oh, then eat.”
Lin Xu awkwardly leaned on the stone bridge railing.
“You treat me.”
So that’s how it was. Shu Wanning’s mouth twitched. She was really freeloading at their place.
Was this the same filthy-rich, powerful CEO from the news?
Lin Xu managed to get lunch out of Shu Wanning.
She didn’t expect this small place to have such tasty fried noodles. One serving wasn’t enough.
Not caring to save Shu Wanning money, she shouted to the owner, “One more bowl, to go.”
“Got it!”
The owner quickly yelled to the kitchen, the wok sizzling with flames, the aroma filling the small diner.
Great, a big eater too.
Shu Wanning sipped water, utterly disdainful of Lin Xu.
“Hurry up, go back. My sister wants to settle accounts with you.”
The noodle Lin Xu was biting snapped in the bowl, and she froze.
“Huh? Settle accounts? Your sister will be upset, and Qingyou’s frail. I can’t upset her.”
Shu Wanning slammed the table, startling nearby diners who kept looking over.
She coughed, clearing her throat.
“Don’t get cocky. You think you can call her Qingyou? Shut your mouth, shameless!”
“Hey, who’re you calling shameless? Can’t you speak politely? Watch your mouth!”
Lin Xu felt humiliated. How could these sisters be so different—one kind, one harsh? Were they even from the same mother?
She couldn’t eat the rest of her noodles.
She was full of anger.
Shu Wanning let out a mocking laugh. Who was the one with a dirty mouth back then? She suspected Shu Qingyou paid off debts by selling herself.
But Shu Qingyou insisted she and Lin Xu had some emotional foundation. Who’d believe that?
Shu Wanning didn’t. Unable to enter the gated mansion, stopped by security, she went to block the gate.
She actually caught Lin Xu, who, despite not being nearsighted, wore gold-rimmed glasses, dressed impeccably.
Seeing someone waiting for her, Lin Xu didn’t treat her like she was invisible.
Shu Wanning was about to confront her.
But Lin Xu just waved, and her assistant, with great tact, shielded her boss.
Then Lin Xu whispered something to the assistant, which Shu Wanning didn’t hear.
But the assistant’s relayed words left Shu Wanning fuming all NIGHT.
“Miss Shu, I’m only passing on President Lin’s words. She said, ‘Your sister willingly climbed into my bed. We each got what we wanted. You, as her sister, should support her. At least, I didn’t let both of you end up on the street. You should be kowtowing to me.’”
