Chapter 7: Her Daughter Seems Very Prejudiced
As expected, Shu Qingyou didn’t lie to her. Shu Wanning, who disliked her, wasn’t home.
Lin Xu felt she should build a good relationship with Shu Rong, or else she’d be disliked and wouldn’t be able to stay long at Shu Qingyou’s house.
Kids are kids, playful by nature. Shu Rong knelt softly in a pile of toys, stacking blocks.
Lin Xu slowed her breathing, watching if the blocks could form a small skyscraper without falling.
She squatted behind Shu Rong, looking like a thief from someone else’s view.
Soon, Shu Rong straightened up. She was a bit underdeveloped, short and small, only 80 centimeters tall compared to her peers.
This made Lin Xu wonder if the child was slow in growth, maybe even a bit dim.
Shu Rong held blocks in both hands, hesitating as she lowered her head, deciding which block to place.
Seeing this, Lin Xu, determined to be a caring big sister, poked Shu Rong’s shoulder.
“Let sister help you.”
Shu Rong turned and saw the bad person’s face, freezing in shock. Her hands lost strength, and the blocks fell.
Her little mouth stayed shut, neither nodding nor shaking her head, her eyes sparkling with surprise.
Lin Xu found Shu Rong’s timid behavior odd, but she was a kid, so how could Lin Xu hold it against her?
With good intentions, she picked up the blocks.
“Watch me show off.”
Lin Xu ruffled Shu Rong’s hair, which felt super soft, better than a cat’s, like a rabbit’s fur.
She heard Shu Rong let out a whimper, sounding even more like a small animal.
“You’re so cute.”
Looking at Shu Rong’s chubby face, Lin Xu resisted poking it again and started building the blocks.
She studied the blocks’ stress points and wobble, full of confidence. She raised her proud face and placed a block.
But this was like the final straw that crushed the “small skyscraper.”
Crash—
The plastic blocks collided, showing Lin Xu no respect, and the building collapsed.
Shu Rong’s ten-minute effort was gone. Her nose stung.
This big sister was so bad, stealing her toys. So mean, she didn’t like her!
Lin Xu just sighed in pity, regretting her meddling. She turned back.
“How about you try again?”
Her words made things worse. Shu Rong sniffled, tears streaming like a broken string.
“Hey, you, you, you…”
Lin Xu’s face froze. Making a little girl cry, she had no idea how to handle it.
After a few seconds, she clumsily wiped Shu Rong’s tears, her hand getting wet.
“It was just a mistake, really, I swear, I’m a level-ten block-building talent!”
Shu Rong didn’t understand “talent.” She only knew Lin Xu was a bad sister.
In the kitchen, Shu Qingyou finished a call. Her university mentor invited her for tea.
It was called tea, but it was just an excuse. Shu Qingyou knew the real topic.
She had refused once and now said she’d think about it.
Stepping out of the kitchen, she saw the two in the corner, looking busy.
The older one didn’t even grab a tissue, her sleeve soaked with tears.
The younger one was cornered, unable to escape, clutching her clothes, crying hard.
Lin Xu didn’t hear footsteps approaching, fully focused on comforting Shu Rong, her mind a mess.
Suddenly, a slender arm with tissues appeared before her.
Lin Xu froze, looked up, and said guiltily, “Sister Shu, sorry, I made your daughter cry. I don’t know what to do.”
Glancing at the scattered toys, Shu Qingyou squatted, gently wiping Shu Rong’s tears. Her voice was calm, not blaming Lin Xu.
“It’s fine. So you like playing with these too.”
Lin Xu, squatting for so long, had numb legs. She leaned on the wall, sensing something odd in those two words.
She couldn’t help but think of what she and Shu Qingyou used to play—maybe some shameful play.
To do such things with a married woman, were they secret lovers?
She shook her head, how could she think so dirtily?
Shu Wanning must hate her, saying things like being a woman’s dog.
“I, I wanted to help Shu Rong. I meant well, don’t be mad.”
Though Shu Rong was only three, she understood some words. She looked up at the smug bad sister.
Not helping! Shu Rong sulked inside, but unable to speak, she just puffed her cheeks and clung to her mom.
Shu Qingyou used a warm towel to clean Shu Rong’s red, tear-streaked face.
Lin Xu stood like a wooden figure, unable to help, as Shu Qingyou was too skilled.
After placing Shu Rong on the sofa with a children’s book, Shu Qingyou’s lips moved, asking seriously, “Why would I be mad? Did you make her cry on purpose?”
Of course not! Lin Xu shook her head like a rattle.
Shu Qingyou had such a good temper, Lin Xu admired her.
“So, can I ask why Shu Rong doesn’t speak?”
Some kids at one could say a few unclear words.
“She’s shy.”
Shu Rong read her storybook eagerly. Shu Qingyou knew Lin Xu wondered if Shu Rong had a physical issue.
“Lin Xu, don’t overthink.”
“Okay, okay.”
Nodding like crazy, she stretched her neck.
“Where’s that Shu Wanning?”
Just as she asked, Lin Xu heard a key turn. Speak of the devil.
Shu Wanning hadn’t left, returning with a plastic bag full of green vegetables and fresh fruits.
“Sis, I got two days’ worth of food.”
Shu Wanning’s sharp eyes spotted Lin Xu’s proud face and quickly looked away.
“Your favorites?”
Shu Qingyou took the bag, went to the kitchen, sorted the food, keeping today’s out and the rest in the fridge.
“Hehe, yeah, sis. Cook for me tonight. It’s been ages since I tasted your cooking.”
Taking off her shoes, Shu Wanning nagged, glared at Lin Xu, and went to help Shu Qingyou.
Preparing vegetables took time.
The faucet’s water was loud. Shu Qingyou tied her hair, rolled her sleeves to her elbows, showing her fair arms.
A faint scar on her wrist marred her flawless skin.
Shu Wanning raised her voice.
“Not like some people, just sitting back, enjoying the easy life, not getting the joy of doing it yourself.”
Clearly aimed at Lin Xu, Shu Qingyou squinted, her finger nudging Shu Wanning.
Lin Xu sprang up like a carp.
“Hey! Shu Wanning!”
She didn’t scare the other two, but Shu Rong flinched, whimpering.
Lin Xu, reflexively softening, soothed, “Sorry, Rongrong, read your book.”
Then she strode forward, fearlessly facing Shu Wanning.
“Enough! You already beat me once, still not satisfied?!”
Shu Wanning, hands wet, flicked water at Lin Xu’s face. “Yeah, I just don’t like you, freeloading at my house like a queen.”
Wiping her face, Lin Xu’s anger flared, her neck glands swelling, emitting a faint floral scent.
Shu Wanning, a Beta, couldn’t smell it, but Shu Qingyou’s legs weakened, overwhelmed by the pheromones faster than expected.
If this continued, Lin Xu’s pheromones would spiral out of control. She gasped, “Lin Xu, phero…mones.”
Shu Wanning noticed her sister’s state first, glaring at Lin Xu.
“Are you even human, always releasing pheromones!”
She ran off.
Lin Xu quickly moved away from Shu Qingyou, feeling like crying herself. When would her gland issue heal?
In less than a minute, Shu Wanning returned with a new suppressor patch, handed it to Shu Qingyou, and turned away.
After applying it, Shu Wanning’s eyes scanned her sister’s neck.
Ignoring Lin Xu, she sat on a stool, picking vegetables.
“Sis, I’m going back to school tomorrow.”
Shu Qingyou paused. Shu Wanning was sensible, standing up to injustice, never feeling inferior as a Beta.
She was a strong, driven kid.
Her words meant she knew Lin Xu would stay a while, and Shu Wanning didn’t want to face her daily—understandable.
Shu Qingyou placed cut potatoes in a bowl. “I’ll drive you. I’m heading out anyway.”
“Oh, okay.”
Lin Xu saw Shu Qingyou handling a knife and stepped closer.
“I can do these too.”
Shu Wanning, with a sour face, shoved a handful of green beans at her.
“Duh, anyone with hands can. You, pick and wash vegetables, and chop the ribs. Sis likes sweet-and-sour ribs, not too big, make them small.”
“Okay, okay.”
So obedient, it felt fake to Shu Qingyou, like it’d break any second.
Lin Xu didn’t dare talk to Shu Qingyou, diligently but clumsily finishing everything, her clothes wet from the work.
Hot, fragrant dishes hit the table.
Sweet-and-sour ribs, braised fish, green bean stewed chicken, tomato egg soup, braised baby bok choy.
And egg custard specially for Shu Rong.
Her first proper meal since losing her memory, Lin Xu salivated.
“Ningning, is your thesis okay?”
Shu Qingyou fed Shu Rong, who ate obediently, whatever her mom gave.
Shu Wanning rubbed her shoulder, annoyed.
“Ugh, the thesis is fine, but some male Alpha keeps harassing me. I rejected and blocked him, but he uses new accounts to add me. I want to punch him, but his uncle’s the dean.”
Haicheng A University, the top-ranked comprehensive university.
Shu Qingyou graduated from there, in arts, while Shu Wanning studied biotechnology.
Shu Qingyou asked, “What’s your dean’s name?”
Shu Wanning casually said the name, biting a rib angrily.
Lin Xu didn’t dare chime in, eating quietly.
Shu Wanning disliked Lin Xu but was tired of scolding.
“Hey, sis, why ask about the dean?”
Shu Qingyou’s expression was cool, wiping her daughter’s mouth.
“Nothing, eat more.”
