Chapter 1: The Best in the World [1]
â—ŽHurry up and get in my bowl!â—Ž
“Li Jianwei, I don’t like you. Our engagement was just a pity thing on my part. I’ve always seen you as a sister.”
“It doesn’t matter if you give me all your company’s shares; my heart only belongs to Xiao Heng. Can you stop being so unreasonable?”
The man in a black suit sat on his office chair, looking down at her. The disgust in his eyes was undisguised, and his condescending attitude made her furious.
Li Jianwei’s first reaction was to punch the man in front of her and make him rephrase what he just said.
Has Wang Yuanfei’s brain been kicked by a donkey? How dare he speak to her with such an attitude?
Didn’t he remember that their engagement was purely a transaction? If his collaboration proposal hadn’t been so profitable, why would she have ever agreed to play along?
Li Jianwei was furious, but she found she couldn’t control her body. She could only listen to Wang Yuanfei’s nonsense from a perspective of being almost prostrate on the ground.
…
The Awakening
Feeling someone touch her forehead, Li Jianwei suddenly opened her eyes and grabbed the wrist in front of her.
“President Li?” The assistant, who was checking if his boss had a fever, was startled.
Li Jianwei was still immersed in the absurd dream. Her usually charming, almond-shaped eyes were filled with fury and murderous intent.
“President Li, are you okay?” the assistant asked cautiously.
Li Jianwei took a deep breath, exhaled slowly, released the assistant’s hand, and murmured an apology.
“I’m fine,” Li Jianwei said, pinching her brow. Her delicate and sharp features showed a hint of confusion.
What was going on lately? She kept having strange nightmares, all related to Wang Yuanfei.
She’d even dreamt of him during a short nap, but she hadn’t seen him recently.
Was her subconscious warning her that he would be a major threat in the future, suggesting she should preemptively take him out?
Recalling fragmented images from her dream, Li Jianwei looked up at her assistant. “Are there any updates on the tech expo next week?”
“Yes, fifteen minutes ago, the organizers sent an email. The original location has an issue, and the participating companies will have to change venues,” the assistant reported.
Li Jianwei instinctively raised an eyebrow. “Where is the new venue?”
Assistant: “The venue has been changed to the Provincial International Convention and Exhibition Center. I’ve already forwarded the email to the publicity department. Most of our materials are still in the warehouse, so the change of location won’t affect us much.”
The familiar name of the venue made Li Jianwei’s eyelids twitch. She was certain she had seen this location in a dream a few days ago.
At the time, she didn’t pay attention because the venue for the tech expo wasn’t the Provincial International Convention and Exhibition Center but the previously decided-upon Science and Technology Innovation Park.
But now, it seemed her dream wasn’t just a dream.
Was it a coincidence? Or a hint that couldn’t be explained?
…
The Expo
The tech expo opened as scheduled. As a specially invited guest of the organizers, Li Jianwei was the first entrepreneur to speak at the opening ceremony.
During her speech, Li Jianwei’s eyes skipped over Wang Yuanfei, who was applauding enthusiastically, and discreetly scanned the seats around him.
After finding no suitable targets, Li Jianwei quickly withdrew her gaze.
In her fragmented dream, Wang Yuanfei already had an excellent assistant by his side. Because of how he treated her, she would act like a crazed man at the expo, making a scene and randomly biting at people.
Logically, Li Jianwei knew she would never do something so stupid.
But the dream that accurately predicted the new venue made her extra cautious.
“Jianwei, your speech was excellent. Many companies are already planning to cooperate with us,” Wang Yuanfei said, walking over with a smile.
Compared to the middle-aged men at the expo who had lost control of their weight, Wang Yuanfei, who was not yet thirty, had a tall and straight figure and handsome features. His well-dressed appearance made him incredibly eye-catching.
Li Jianwei hummed in acknowledgment, not refuting Wang Yuanfei’s self-congratulatory behavior. “I heard you’ve got a new assistant?”
The smile on Wang Yuanfei’s face froze for a moment. He said vaguely, “My previous assistant was sent on an overseas assignment and won’t be back anytime soon, so I just picked a new one to fill in.”
“Jianwei, why don’t we go check out the international exhibition area? Many executives from European and American tech companies have arrived. Talking to them might lead to an unexpected discovery.” Wang Yuanfei’s tone sped up, and his foot shifted position.
Li Jianwei nodded with a smile, her expression unchanged, but her wariness was noticeably deeper.
Wang Yuanfei really did change his assistant just like in the dream. Why was he so eager to change the subject? He must be hiding something.
…
The Conflict
After confirming a preliminary cooperation intention with a German company, Li Jianwei used a convenient excuse to leave and headed toward the lounge.
The atmosphere in the lounge was strange. A well-dressed man with a potbelly was loudly scolding a young woman.
The young woman was dressed simply in a common shirt and trousers. Her long hair was tied into a bun with a cartoon-themed hair tie.
Anyone who had been in the workplace for a few years could see that this young woman was a novice fresh out of college, with a clean and naive demeanor.
Li Jianwei’s gaze lingered on the young woman for a moment. She found it hard to equate this naive girl with the cool and collected figure who appeared in her dream.
Could such a transparent, innocent girl really become a ruthless, silent tech industry mogul in the future?
“That’s just nonsense! What do you know about technology? How dare you slander my company’s product? Get your boss out here to talk to me!” the man’s grating voice rang out in the lounge.
Faced with the baseless accusation, Shu Heng responded calmly, “This is a tech expo. I’m just a visitor evaluating the products on display. It has nothing to do with the company I work for.”
“Also, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with what I said. I’ve tried your company’s latest automatic driving system. Its performance in a simulated test was acceptable, but it’s not enough to handle complex real-world road conditions.”
“Compared to your company, the system exhibited by Zhizhe Technology is clearly more flexible. If I were to choose…”
Shu Heng’s words were logical and well-reasoned, but the man, who felt he had lost face, didn’t care about logic. He only cared about winning the argument and interrupted her directly.
“You look like you just graduated. Do you know how long our company has been in this industry?”
“My R&D team are all Ph.D. holders. Are you saying that together they don’t know as much as you, a university student?”
Shu Heng frowned and instinctively rebutted the other party’s sharp attack. “That’s not what I meant, I was just…”
“Then what did you mean? Do you know anything about automatic driving systems? What gives you, an outsider, the right to question the products of us insiders?” The man skillfully twisted her words.
“This is a tech expo. Everyone here is a professional. Do you know how much your words will affect my company if they get out?” The man’s tone grew more and more self-righteous.
“Since you’re young, I won’t be too hard on you. Apologize to me by drinking three glasses of wine, and I won’t pursue this matter of you slandering our company.”
Shu Heng wanted to continue arguing, but a colleague next to her tugged at her sleeve and gently shook her head.
“If this gets out, it will reflect badly on the company. Don’t forget, you’re not just a regular employee now; you’re the CEO’s assistant. It’s easy for them to use this to their advantage.”
Shu Heng frowned. She couldn’t deny her colleague’s words were valid.
But this matter was started by the other person, who twisted her words. She had just been discussing the pros and cons of the exhibited products privately with a colleague when the man latched onto it.
“What’s wrong, you’re not even willing to apologize?” The man noticed the hesitation in Shu Heng’s eyes and looked triumphant. “If not, I’ll just sue you for attempting to infringe on my company’s reputation.”
Shu Heng didn’t think she was wrong, but she had just graduated. If she was sued, she couldn’t possibly stand up to a company.
Just as Shu Heng was about to give in and reach for a wine glass, a long, slender hand pressed down on her hand, warming her cold skin.
She looked up and was met with a pair of slightly upturned, almond-shaped eyes. The dark eyes were filled with appreciation and approval.
Shu Heng quickly recognized Li Jianwei. In person, she was even more beautiful than in her profile pictures.
Just three seconds of silent eye contact, and the tension and anxiety in Shu Heng’s heart were soothed. It was as if she had an instant supporter, and she no longer needed to be so on edge.
“What are you going to sue this young woman for? Was there something wrong with what she said?” Li Jianwei turned her head to face the middle-aged man, the approval in her eyes instantly turning into a cold, scrutinizing stare.
Li Jianwei had just given a speech at the opening ceremony, so everyone present knew who she was.
The middle-aged man was no exception. He immediately changed his demeanor, laughing obsequiously. “It’s nothing, I was just joking with the young lady to liven up the atmosphere. It’s all just a joke.”
Li Jianwei chuckled lightly. “So, you also agree that Zhizhe Technology’s automatic driving system is much better than your company’s?”
The man’s smile froze. As a company CEO, how could he belittle his own product in front of a competitor?
“That’s not it. Our company’s system and your company’s have different research focuses, so you could say they each have their own merits,” the man said, trying to avoid a direct answer and not wanting to offend Li Jianwei.
Li Jianwei didn’t speak, just stared at the man with a scrutinizing look.
The man grew flustered under her gaze. “Of course, in terms of system flexibility, our company’s system is slightly lacking. I will tell my team to learn from you, President Li, and quickly make up for our shortcomings.”
Li Jianwei: “Since you admit there’s a shortcoming, shouldn’t you apologize to this young woman? She was telling the truth, not slandering or defaming you.”
The man didn’t dare to be stubborn and immediately gave in. “Young lady, I apologize. I scared you just now.”
Shu Heng seemed not to have heard him, still looking at Li Jianwei with a worshipful gaze, her eyes shining brightly.
Before Shu Heng could say anything, Wang Yuanfei’s voice came over. “Why is everyone gathered here? Is there something exciting happening?”
“It’s nothing, just a small misunderstanding that’s already been resolved,” the man said, a step ahead.
Wang Yuanfei gave Shu Heng a subtle look and noticed her hand was covered by Li Jianwei’s. His pupils contracted slightly.
“Jianwei, Mr. Thomas is interested in collaborating with us and is waiting for you in the exhibition hall,” Wang Yuanfei said, deliberately ignoring Shu Heng and walking over to physically separate the two women.
Upon feeling the warmth on her hand disappear, a silent sense of loss enveloped Shu Heng.
Before Shu Heng could say anything, she saw Li Jianwei put her hand on Wang Yuanfei’s shoulder, push him to the side with force, and look over with a smiling gaze.
“You have a good eye. How about you come work for Zhizhe Technology? We can develop more advanced systems together.”
Shu Heng’s eyes lit up even more at the suggestion, but when her gaze met Wang Yuanfei’s, she hesitated again.
“Jianwei, this is our company’s employee. You can’t poach my talent,” Wang Yuanfei said anxiously, no longer hiding his relationship with Shu Heng and introducing her publicly.
“She’s a talented individual who joined our company through campus recruitment. She’s an outstanding graduate from Hua University and is currently my assistant.”
“Hello, President Li, I’m Shu Heng,” Shu Heng took the opportunity to introduce herself. “I just graduated from Hua University this year with a dual degree in artificial intelligence and data science and big data technology. I’m 22 years old.”
The smile in Li Jianwei’s eyes deepened. She ignored Wang Yuanfei’s words, pulled a personal business card from her pocket, and put it into Shu Heng’s hand with an undeniable gesture.
“Whenever you want to change jobs, just call the number on here to contact me.”
“Remember one thing: anything he can give you, I can give you just as well, and even more.”
This made Wang Yuanfei’s face fall. He quickly snatched the business card from Shu Heng’s hand and said jokingly, “Jianwei, next time you hand out a business card, remember to do it when I’m not here. Otherwise, I’ll look bad, won’t I?”
Li Jianwei wasn’t interested in a business card tug-of-war. Before she was pulled away to meet a client, she looked at Shu Heng.
Forced to act because her current boss was present, Shu Heng didn’t speak, but she nodded vigorously at Li Jianwei when Wang Yuanfei couldn’t see.
The moment the business card was handed to her, Shu Heng had already memorized the eleven-digit private number on it.
As soon as her current boss left, Shu Heng eagerly saved the number to her phone.
She might not need this number right now, but she’d definitely use it in the future!
