Chapter 11: Stolen, Fleeting Happiness
â—ŽStolen, Fleeting Happinessâ—Ž
“Mom, this is CEO Li. I’ve mentioned her to you on the phone. She’s helped me so much,” Shu Heng walked over and gave her mom a big hug, then smiled as she introduced Li Jianwei.
“Hello, Auntie. I’m Li Jianwei. Just call me Xiaoli,” Li Jianwei said with a smile, putting the gifts she was holding in a corner. “I apologize for intruding on you for these few days, and I hope you don’t mind.”
“I don’t mind, I don’t mind. We’re the ones who should be thanking you, CEO Li, for arranging a job and a place for our Xiaoshu to stay,” Shu Heng’s mom said a little reservedly, instinctively bending her back a little.
Shu Heng’s mom never went to high school. After finishing junior high, her family sent her to a factory to work. Because her room and board were fully covered, she never even got to hold her paycheck; it was given directly to her father by her boss.
After she met Shu Heng’s father and started a family, she was finally able to get her due compensation from her boss, but because of that, she became distant from her family and only contacted them during holidays.
After Shu Heng’s father’s unexpected death, the compensation that should have been given to her was taken by her relatives, and the house was only given to Shu Heng’s mom because the high-interest mortgage had not been paid off.
But Shu Heng’s mom did not become dejected. Instead, she worked hard to earn money and put all her efforts into her daughter.
However, God was too harsh on Shu Heng’s mom. Overwork caused her joints to have problems. After the surgery, she lost the opportunity to do heavy labor. She had no choice but to mortgage the house she had just paid off to barely get by.
“I’ve already tidied up your room. The towels and toiletries have also been washed with boiling water, so they’re very clean,” Shu Heng’s mom said quickly, afraid that she would somehow neglect Li Jianwei, the person who had been so kind to her daughter.
Li Jianwei’s lips moved slightly, as if she wanted to say something, but after seeing the unease in Shu Heng’s mom’s eyes, she nodded and only said, “Thank you.”
Shu Heng also didn’t seem to think there was anything wrong with her mom’s attitude. She quickly cleared a space in her wardrobe, so Li Jianwei could hang up the clothes from her suitcase.
“The water heater has been turned on ahead of time. Sister, you can go take a shower. The hairdryer is here,” Shu Heng turned on the bathroom heater in advance, introducing her family’s bathroom which was less than five square meters.
Li Jianwei still just nodded. It wasn’t until Shu Heng left with a slight blush that she pinned up her hair and prepared to take a shower.
Taking a shower in a small bathroom was not difficult for Li Jianwei to accept. It just brought back a few memories from her college days.
Fifteen minutes later, Li Jianwei, wearing her pajamas, came out of the bathroom.
The room, which had been a little chilly, was now filled with warm air. The sound of the air conditioning unit outside the window was a bit obvious. Even with the window tightly closed, she could still hear it clearly.
Thankfully, it’s not too harsh. After getting used to it, it can be a nice background noise.
“Sister, this is freshly cut apple. Eat slowly. I’ll go take a shower first.” Shu Heng didn’t dare to look for too long. After saying that in a hurry, she rushed into the bathroom.
Li Jianwei didn’t even have a chance to remind her that the steam hadn’t dissipated yet before she heard the bathroom door being locked from the inside.
Is there a need to be in such a rush? It’s only 9 o’clock. It’s not time for bed yet.
Li Jianwei instinctively looked down. Her pajamas were neatly worn, except for the top button which was undone, revealing a little bit of her fair skin.
It’s a very conservative style. It’s not a camisole or anything. She couldn’t be getting too shy because of this, could she?
Li Jianwei chuckled and shook her head. She sat down at the desk and started eating the apple with a toothpick.
Soon, the sound of trickling water came from the bathroom, replacing the sound of the air conditioning unit and entering Li Jianwei’s ears.
Before Li Jianwei could put the third piece of apple into her mouth, she heard a clatter from the bathroom, and the sound of the water stopped abruptly.
“Shu Heng, are you okay?” Li Jianwei rushed to the door and patted the frosted glass door.
“I’m fine. I just accidentally dropped the body wash,” Shu Heng’s slightly muffled voice came from inside.
Li Jianwei frowned, instinctively feeling that things weren’t that simple, but due to her identity, she could only open her mouth to remind her. “Okay, be careful. There might still be some leftover foam that hasn’t been rinsed away.”
Shu Heng replied and blushed as she picked up the dropped body wash. She quickly turned on the showerhead, using the sound of the water to cover her embarrassment.
Ah, ah, ah, Shu Heng, what are you doing?!
You were so distracted while squeezing out body wash that you almost slipped! Quickly get rid of those weird thoughts in your head!
Half an hour later, Shu Heng came out, a little wet and with a flushed face.
After seeing that Li Jianwei had already gotten into bed, Shu Heng slowly moved toward the bed.
“Is there anything else you need to do?” Li Jianwei turned her head to look at Shu Heng, her gaze drawn to the flower print on her pajamas.
Perhaps it was a coincidence, but the prominent parts on Shu Heng’s chest were perfectly topped with two little pink flowers, giving this simple pajama a special meaning.
“N-no.” Shu Heng’s face got redder and redder, and she gradually became uncomfortable. It felt wrong to move and even more wrong to just stand there.
“The pattern on your pajamas is very cute,” Li Jianwei said with a smile, retracting her gaze. She patted the empty space beside her. “If you don’t have anything to do, then rest. We’ve been on the road all day today.”
“Okay.” Shu Heng, blushing, lifted the covers and lay down almost right next to the edge of the bed. “Sister, should I turn off the light?”
Li Jianwei: “Mmm.”
Click—
The room fell into darkness. As the sound of talking disappeared, the sound of the air conditioning unit outside became more obvious.
“Won’t you come over here?” Li Jianwei’s voice suddenly rang out. “There’s a gap in between us, which isn’t good for staying warm.”
“I… I’ll move over a little.” Shu Heng silently swallowed. She moved toward the middle by a few centimeters at a time until her shoulder touched Li Jianwei’s body.
Li Jianwei pulled the covers up, successfully covering her exposed neck. “Shu Heng, good night.”
“Good night.” Shu Heng lay flat and didn’t dare to move, her ears perked up to listen to the sounds of breathing in the room.
She didn’t know how much time had passed before Shu Heng dared to move her hand slightly under the covers, gently touching the back of her beloved’s hand with the tip of her little finger, and a smile formed on her lips.
Shu Heng was not slow when it came to feelings. She was also very clear that some thoughts would not arise toward a friend.
But Shu Heng didn’t dare to show her feelings. Compared to her feelings for Li Jianwei, she was more aware of the gap between the two of them.
She was just an ordinary person with a little talent in studying, while Li Jianwei was the CEO of a publicly traded company worth hundreds of billions. Perhaps even after working hard for a hundred years, she still wouldn’t be able to stand with Sister Li.
As she thought about it, Shu Heng felt a blockage in her heart, as if it was being pressed down by a large rock, making it difficult to breathe.
The only thing she could do was to take advantage of the times when Sister Li was not on guard and secretly do some small things, like a thief, stealing a fleeting moment of happiness.
“Not sleeping yet?” Li Jianwei’s voice suddenly sounded, making Shu Heng’s heart almost jump out of her chest.
“I am. I’ll sleep right away,” Shu Heng replied with a stumble, almost biting her tongue.
“Go to sleep early. Tomorrow, you can show me around your hometown,” Li Jianwei said softly, her voice a little hoarse.
Before Shu Heng could respond, Li Jianwei took her hand that she had only dared to touch carefully, and her fingertips forcefully went through the gaps, grabbing it.
Shu Heng forgot if she had responded. She only remembered that her palm was very warm and the blankets were also very warm.
