Chapter 18: A Swift Slap in the Face
â—ŽA Swift Slap in the Faceâ—Ž
Jiang Kun clearly didn’t understand the situation, but that didn’t stop him from seizing the opportunity to show off.
“So it was a traffic accident. We’re all classmates, why not just handle it privately?” Jiang Kun patted Hu Xuan on his hunched shoulder. “Don’t worry. I have some connections here.”
“Did the traffic police give you any penalty? If so, I’ll go and say hello to the traffic police captain for you,” Jiang Kun said with confidence.
“I had dinner with the county leaders a while ago. The deputy county chief and the traffic police captain were both there. I have the captain’s contact information.”
Hu Xuan gave a fake smile and said sarcastically, “Oh really? CEO Jiang, you’re so amazing, but I won’t bother you with such a small matter.”
This is hilarious. He’s bragging about having dinner with the county leaders. He probably just went up and said hello when the county leaders were doing an inspection.
The person I’m apologizing to is someone the county party secretary would personally visit with a team. Even if Jiang Kun isn’t bragging, he’s not qualified to go against her.
Feeling as if he was the only sober one in the room, Hu Xuan looked at Jiang Kun with a hint of contempt that was not easily noticeable.
“As long as you can handle it yourself, that’s fine. If you run into trouble next time, you can ask me for help,” the drunk Jiang Kun didn’t hear the wrong tone in Hu Xuan’s voice and just continued to brag.
Hu Xuan perfunctorily agreed. He just wanted to reduce his presence now to avoid any further trouble.
Putting aside Jiang Kun, who was showing off both overtly and covertly, the dinner was quite harmonious.
Shu Heng was either sharing memorable past experiences with Li Jianwei or chatting with Teacher Gong and even made an appointment to visit him at his home the day after tomorrow.
The dinner was scheduled for five o’clock. Everyone was seated and started eating at five thirty. With the drinking and ordering more dishes in between, it was almost eight o’clock by the time the dinner ended.
The drunk guys were walking out of private room 6 with their arms around each other’s shoulders, still discussing going to a KTV to have some more fun before going home.
Jiang Kun naturally continued to take the lead, saying that he would pay for all the expenses that night, which led to a new wave of flattery from the others.
As luck would have it, as the group was walking grandly toward the entrance, they ran into a group of leaders wearing business jackets.
“CEO Jiang, it looks like the leaders are here to inspect the hotel. Do you know anyone inside?” A male classmate joked. “Should we go say hello?”
Jiang Kun, who was surrounded by everyone in the front, quickly recognized that the person leading the group was Deputy County Chief Liu. The alcohol-corroded brain made him make a wrong decision—he actually walked up and tried to greet Deputy County Chief Liu.
“Deputy County Chief Liu, I’m Xiao Jiang from Chongming Construction. You’re still doing inspections during the New Year. You’re working so hard,” Jiang Kun said with a smiling face.
Deputy County Chief Liu was stunned for a moment. He only remembered who Jiang Kun was after his secretary reminded him and gave a slightly distant reply: “It’s my duty.”
After saying that, Deputy County Chief Liu continued to walk forward, with no intention of continuing the conversation with Jiang Kun.
“Deputy County Chief Liu, when is a good time to start the maintenance on the city roads?” Jiang Kun chased after him, trying to keep the conversation going.
So many of his classmates were watching. If he was dismissed with just one sentence, wouldn’t it make everything he said at the dinner table sound like bragging? He couldn’t let that happen.
“As soon as possible.” Deputy County Chief Liu, who had been stopped twice, frowned, and his tone also showed a hint of displeasure. “Who is in charge of this matter? Didn’t they communicate it clearly with you?”
Jiang Kun looked embarrassed. “I’ve already communicated with the person in charge. I just wanted to confirm with you, Deputy County Chief. If you don’t have any special arrangements, I’ll proceed according to the plan we’ve set?”
“Mhm.” Deputy County Chief Liu turned his head and glanced at Jiang Kun, preparing to secretly remember this person who was unable to read the room and stopped him. He would exclude him from future collaborations.
But as he glanced over, another familiar figure came into view, which immediately relaxed his frown and even brought a smile to his face.
Before Jiang Kun could be flattered and continue the conversation, Deputy County Chief Liu walked directly toward where Li Jianwei was standing and extended his hand with a smile. “CEO Li, it’s nice to see you again. Are you also having dinner here?”
“Deputy County Chief Liu, I’m accompanying Shu Heng and her classmates. I’m just here to mooch off their dinner,” Li Jianwei said with a smile, extending her hand to give a handshake.
“Student Shu Heng is also here. It’s gotten cold these past few days. It’s going to be sleet the day after tomorrow,” Deputy County Chief Liu’s attitude was amiable, just like an ordinary elder asking about their well-being. “If your mom’s legs are uncomfortable, you can go to the hospital for physical therapy for a while.”
“Yes, thank you for your concern, Deputy County Chief Liu,” even though it wasn’t their first meeting, Shu Heng was still a little reserved.
“Deputy County Chief Liu, you’re working so hard, still inspecting things during the New Year,” Li Jianwei chimed in.
“We’re doing this trip to ensure that the people can have a safe New Year,” Deputy County Chief Liu said with a chuckle. “Jinlun Hotel is one of the hallmarks of our Quanyuan County. It’s especially lively during the New Year, and the flow of people is three times more than usual.”
“Speaking of which, Jinlun Hotel introduced a smart system last year that integrates guest rooms, dining, and security. I heard it can monitor some abnormal situations and prevent fires and human accidents. CEO Li, would you like to come and take a look?”
“At the same time, you can also give me some early guidance. If nothing unexpected happens, I should be the one responsible for liaising with the team you send.”
Li Jianwei smiled. “I wouldn’t say I’m giving guidance. I can, however, serve as a technical consultant and answer some of your questions, Deputy County Chief Liu.”
Deputy County Chief Liu: “Then I’ll have to trouble you, CEO Li.”
“Shu Heng, say hello to Teacher Gong. I’ll have to excuse myself today. See you the day after tomorrow,” Li Jianwei said, pulling Shu Heng into the team with one sentence.
Shu Heng quickly agreed. She jogged over to Teacher Gong as Li Jianwei had told her to and explained the situation.
“Okay, go and learn from your boss. Don’t miss this great opportunity,” the smile on Teacher Gong’s face deepened. He was genuinely happy for his student.
The things that Shu Heng couldn’t see, Teacher Gong saw clearly.
To be valued and nurtured by a leader with a background and ability, Shu Heng was destined to go far in the future.
Li Jianwei and Deputy County Chief Liu walked side by side at the front of the group. Shu Heng and the secretary fell a step behind, serving as assistants. They even chatted a little.
After the group walked away, Jiang Kun walked back, forcing a smile to save face. “I didn’t know Shu Heng also knew Deputy County Chief Liu. You should have said something sooner. I wouldn’t have had to rush to greet him and try to get a recommendation.”
“Pffft—” Hu Xuan laughed without any regard for Jiang Kun. Now that he didn’t have to worry about Li Jianwei, he could finally say what he had been holding in.
“Who’s recommending who? Did you see Deputy County Chief Liu even look at you properly? Stop trying to take credit.”
“You don’t think you’re the most amazing person just because you started a small company, do you? Shu Heng is the one with a bright future. As long as she follows CEO Li, she’ll have no trouble making money. She’s just being low-key, unlike you.”
Hu Xuan’s words completely shattered Jiang Kun’s facade. “What do you mean by that?”
“I don’t mean anything. I’m just stating the facts,” Hu Xuan said with a grin. “CEO Jiang, you’re not getting mad, are you?”
“You…” Jiang Kun was easily enraged. He raised his fist, ready to resort to violence. Fortunately, Teacher Gong spoke up in time to stop them, preventing the two from fighting in public.
Teacher Gong’s face was stern: “No driving after drinking. Don’t cause any trouble during the New Year. Go home and rest early.”
The homeroom teacher’s pressure was still very effective on young people in their early twenties. Hu Xuan and Jiang Kun both backed down, only daring to complain in low voices and give each other dirty looks.
It was obvious that neither of them would give in. Although they didn’t fight this time, it was hard to say what would happen if they ran into each other again. It was very possible they would end up with broken heads and bleeding faces.
