- Episode 24 - An Unchangeable Outcome (Prince Alfred’s Perspective)
It seems the results of the retaken exam I instructed have come out. I thought this would reveal my true abilities.
Yet, it wasn’t the result I hoped for. This must also be some kind of mistake.
Once again, I decided to summon the school officials and hear their side of the story.
“What is the meaning of this result? You promised to provide the correct grades.”
I spoke without hiding my anger.
“That’s her true ability. No doubt about it.”
The principal answers calmly.
“Are they cheating? Or did they make the exam easier?”
“The difficulty of the exam has been increased as instructed. Here are the exam questions for this time.”
I go through the materials handed to me while saying that. I don’t understand the meaning. It’s too difficult for me.
With this, I can’t make the right judgment.
“Vanessa, look at this.”
I handed the materials to Vanessa, who is more competent than me. She would understand them. However, she grimaced when she looked at the materials.
“I didn’t learn anything like this! You really told them the answers in advance, didn’t you!?”
Vanessa openly displayed her anger. Was it a problem even she couldn’t understand?
“If she has a solid grasp of the fundamentals of magic, this is the kind of problem that can be solved with application. Besides, she is studying under a seasoned wizard. She is honing her skills daily under a wonderful mentor, so she is not an ordinary student.”
“That’s unfair! If I had a proper teacher, my skills would improve too! Because I have talent!”
I think Vanessa is right. The environment for learning is different between a duke’s daughter and a commoner magician. The difference must be significant.
“Excuse me, but Vanessa’s grades this time were terrible. I’ve heard that she hasn’t been focusing on her classes recently. If it continues like this, she’ll be left behind in no time.”
At the headmaster’s words, Vanessa’s face turned bright red.
“Hey, don’t bully Vanessa. She’s working hard too!”
That doesn’t matter this time. Vanessa’s lack of focus in class and the results of this exam are separate issues. The principal is trying to shift the focus.
“……I apologize.”
The principal didn’t seem to be sincerely apologizing and just gave a token apology. What a rude person. Saying things that would hurt Vanessa. It’s a hassle to even point it out. There’s no need for further discussion, so I’ll have the principal and others step back.
“Really, they were such rude people.”
“Yeah, that’s right.”
“Are you going to fire me like you said before?”
“That is… Hmm.”
That was something I came up with on the spot and said casually back then. Actually, switching things around seems like it would be quite a hassle. More than that, right now.
“Anyway, we have to deal with Eleanor first.”
“Indeed, that’s right!”
What should we do about Eleanor? With her around, we can’t feel at ease. Everything was going smoothly until now. It’s unforgivable for her to interfere like this.
We need to come up with a solution. We’ll consult together and definitely find a way.
