- Heaven's Mercy - A Second Chance at Life
During Yunhong Dynasty, In the yong’an marquis manor…
Shangguan Haitong, an older woman, drank the calming tea in one gulp. She held onto the table corner to stand but felt dizzy and sank back into the chair.
“Huan Shuang, Huan Shuang,” Shangguan Haitong called weakly, rubbing her temples.
“You don’t need to call her, old madam. She won’t come.” A middle-aged woman dressed in luxurious clothes walked into the room gracefully.
Her hair was adorned with glittering jewels, and her face was well-maintained.
It was the Marquis Manor’s lady.
Shangguan Haitong barely lifted her eyelids and extended a trembling hand. “Help me see Xi’er. I must protect her.”
The daughter-in-law didn’t move an inch. Instead, her eyes glinted with mockery, and a smirk formed on her lips.
“Old madam, Xi’er has already hung herself to clear her name and preserve the manor’s reputation. I came to let you know, so you won’t have to suffer the pain of burying your grandchild.”
She paused, her tone turning sinister. “I’m also here to send you on your way to join her.”
Shangguan Haitong’s eyes widened in fury, her hand clutching the table as she struggled to stand. “What? You… you did all this?!”
The daughter-in-law stood silently, smiling faintly.
Behind her, the door swung open, and a group of people stormed in, their presence oppressive.
The Marquis Manor was vast and powerful, with many elders and relatives in the family. They all entered the room, surrounding Shangguan Haitong, their expressions cold and unyielding.
Shangguan Haitong gritted her teeth, forcing herself to remain calm as she sat upright in her high seat. “I am the mistress of the Marquis Manor. What do you all think you’re doing?”
Even an aging tiger commands respect. The crowd exchanged uneasy glances, hesitant to make the first move.
“The mistress? What arrogance!”
A cold voice rang out, and the crowd parted to make way.
An elderly man, over eighty years old, leaning on a cane and supported by attendants, walked in.
It was Li Shanqi, the Yong’an Marquis himself!
Shangguan Haitong scoffed inwardly, “This decrepit old man.”
Though his hair was snow-white, Li Shanqi’s eyes gleamed with sharpness. He stepped steadily into the center of the room, radiating authority.
His presence emboldened the others. After all, this was the Yong’an Marquis Manor. How could they let a female outsider take control of his Manor?
Li Shanqi, a man who had spent his life scheming, would never tolerate being outplayed by a mere woman.
With a booming voice, he rebuked her, “Shangguan Haitong, Xi’er has already made the way for you. It’s time for you to follow her!”
At this point, Shangguan Haitong finally understood. This was all a trap, a carefully laid plan to eliminate her!
Her fury burned, but she lifted her face into a smile. “Xi’er was your great-granddaughter, yet you felt no remorse in sacrificing her. Ruthless, unfeeling, and utterly cold-blooded… willing to abandon even your own kin. Tell me, everyone, can you truly trust a man like this?”
Some hesitated, and others, though inwardly shaken, forced themselves to appear resolute.
“Stop trying to sow discord! Do you think you’re any better? Don’t assume we’re unaware of the things you’ve done in secret.”
“If you have nothing to hide, then prove your innocence. Can you claim your hands are clean?”
Shangguan Haitong scanned the room, her gaze sharp, “Fools… all of you are fools.”
Li Shanqi had never underestimated this woman. Without hesitation, he raised his hand, signaling his men to act.
Two young attendants stepped forward, pinning Shangguan Haitong down on either side.
A maid brought in a bowl of medicine. Her daughter-in-law took the bowl from them, gripping Shangguan Haitong’s chin and forcing her to drink it.
Once the medicine was gone, the bowl was smashed to pieces.
The attendants released her and stepped back.
To everyone’s shock, Shangguan Haitong chuckled softly. Then, leaning back against her chair, she burst into wild laughter.
The crowd exchanged confused glances.
Li Shanqi, puzzled, asked, “What are you laughing at?”
Shangguan Haitong raised her gaze, locking eyes with Li Shanqi. “I’m laughing at you, old marquis. You’ve schemed so thoroughly, yet in the end, you’ll gain nothing. Do you think you can kill his daughter and harm his mother in his absence and get away? You believe you’ve hidden it well. What a pity… He already knows everything! Hahaha!”
These four square walls had imprisoned her for a lifetime, and in the end, she couldn’t even protect her beloved granddaughter.
She tasted blood in her throat, a metallic tang spilling from the corner of her mouth. Staggering to her feet, she pointed a trembling finger at Li Shanqi. “You old wretch! Dream on if you think you can reclaim control of the Marquis Manor! My son is the emperor’s most trusted minister, holding great power. I may die, but don’t think you’ll get away unscathed!”
She laughed wildly and fearlessly.
Even if she lost, she would take these people down with her!
Li Shanqi’s eyes narrowed dangerously. Suddenly, he grabbed Shangguan Haitong’s neck, his voice filled with rage. “Before you die answer me, is he really my biological grandson or not?!”
A mouthful of blood sprayed onto his disgusted face. Shangguan Haitong lowered her voice, her tone venomous. “All your sons died by my hands. I was so thoughtful that I made sure they all died in different ways. Now, in the underworld, they’ll have plenty to discuss. They won’t just sit there staring at each other blankly.”
Li Shanqi tightened his grip, his murderous intent fully revealed. “Answer me! Is he my grandson?!”
Shangguan Haitong smiled mockingly, her lips forming four silent words: “You have no heirs… hahaha”
No heirs!
Li Shanqi’s eyes widened in fury. So, the grandson he cherished the most wasn’t…
Shangguan Haitong’s gaze sharpened suddenly. With swift precision, she pulled the hairpin from her hair and stabbed it mercilessly into his neck.
Blood gushed out in torrents, splattering her face. Her expression was eerily calm. No one could stand in her son’s way!
Li Shanqi clutched his neck, staggering back as he pushed her away.
Shangguan Haitong stumbled, falling to the ground.
Her throat itched unbearably, and she turned her head to spit out a mouthful of blood. The strength in her body drained away as she gently lay down.
Outside, the noise grew louder. A middle-aged man rushed in, surrounded by people. His steps were hurried, his expression anxious and full of worry.
Her daughter-in-law tried to explain.
Without hesitation, the man slapped her across the face. “Get out!”
The last image of Shangguan Haitong’s life was her son rushing toward her, his figure blurred by the sight of blood everywhere.
She hadn’t lost. If death was inevitable, she would take everyone blocking her path with her.
She hadn’t lost…
Her body grew lighter and lighter, as though she were falling into endless darkness.
“Bow to the heavens and earth!” The ceremonial official’s loud and festive call echoed clearly.
Under the bright red bridal veil, Shangguan Haitong suddenly regained awareness, her chest rising and falling rapidly.
The sound of jubilant wedding drums filled her ears. The solid touch of the maid supporting her felt so vivid it seemed like a dream.
Could this be a glimpse of her past on the Bridge of Helplessness?
The groom, dressed in splendid red wedding robes, stood confidently, exuding joy as he completed his bow to the heavens.
But the bride, who should have been bowing alongside him, remained motionless in place.
The air grew still in an instant.
The guests began whispering among themselves.
A maid softly reminded, “Miss, it’s time to bow.”
The voice, so familiar yet distant, startled Shangguan Haitong.
“Yin Hua?”
“Wedding? No.”
Whether this is a fleeting dream or heaven’s mercy for a second chance,
She would never marry into the Marquis’s house again!
Amid the astonished murmurs, Shangguan Haitong raised her hand to lift the red veil, revealing her cold, sharp features.
At sixteen, she was stunning, with a slight touch of makeup that made her beauty irresistible.
In an instant, many were left staring, mesmerized.
The groom, Li Xizhu, was especially stunned by her beauty.
The sticky, intrusive gazes around her made Shangguan Haitong slightly tilt her eyes, letting out a cold smile.
Her damned, useless husband…
“Absurd.” The voice of the Old Marquis, stern and commanding, rang out from the high seat.
Shangguan Haitong’s heart surged with violent waves of fury, her eyes filled with murderous intent.
She slowly turned, facing the young, Marquis of Yong’an.
Li Shanqi had been in the officialdom long enough to have seen all sorts of people. This woman in front of him gave off a dangerous aura.
As the tension built in the air, a woman hurriedly ran into the bridal chamber, kneeling to report, “Miss, the old madam has passed away.”
The room was filled with shock.
Yin Hua recognized the woman as Bao Ying, a servant who worked for Zhou Yiniang.
She immediately asked, “Before the young lady left, the old madam was just fine. What happened? Please explain clearly.”
Bao Ying wiped her tears and said sadly, “After the young lady got married, the old madam was chatting with the guests in the flower hall. But unexpectedly, she fainted while talking, and not long after, she passed away. The wedding banquet has ended, and now the house is in chaos. I’ve been sent here to inform you.”
A lot of people couldn’t help but glance at the bride.
When a senior family member dies, the proper thing to do is to observe mourning for three years.
But now the bride has been brought into the Marquis’ house. Will she still go through the mourning ritual, or will she get married instead?
Shangguan Haitong shot Bao Ying a cold look.
Bao Ying came at just the right time; she could use it as a chance to escape the Marquis’s house.
She raised her head, bowed, and said, “I had a deep bond with my grandmother, and I wish to do the ritual of mourning for three years. I ask the Marquis to allow me to return home.”
Mourning for three years?!
Li Xizhu was the first to object, saying, “Father, absolutely not! She’s already entered the house; she’s part of the Marquis’ family now.”
