The Moon Shines on Me (GL) - Chapter 11
Gu Shiwei: “Shen Yuan, then do you like it when I speak to you in this tone?”
Gu Shiwei’s voice started very soft, carrying a hint of seduction, and she deliberately emphasized the word “like.”
Her final syllable was drawn out, with a questioning lilt, like a small hook that made one’s heart itch.
Shen Yuan froze, seemingly having not expected Gu Shiwei to ask such a question.
“Shen Yuan.” Gu Shiwei gently pinched Shen Yuan’s slender jaw and slowly tilted it up, forcing her to look straight at her: “Can you answer my question?”
They were extremely close, their breaths seemingly intertwined, and Shen Yuan’s earlobes slowly turned red.
Shen Yuan: “I don’t dislike it.”
“Good, I’ll tentatively take ‘don’t dislike’ as ‘you like it,’ and I’ll strictly supervise you from now on.”
After Gu Shiwei finished speaking, she scooped a spoonful of seafood congee and brought it to Shen Yuan’s mouth.
Shen Yuan didn’t move.
Gu Shiwei’s hand suddenly trembled: “Shen Yuan?”
“Shen Yuan, can’t you see?” Gu Shiwei stared at Shen Yuan’s empty eyes, her brows slightly furrowed.
“Mmm, I’m fine, it’ll be better in a bit.”
Shen Yuan’s hands were still neatly placed on her knees. If she hadn’t missed that spoonful of congee just now, no one would have noticed there was a problem with her eyes.
Hypoglycemia can lead to insufficient glucose supply to the brain, and severe cases can even press on the optic nerve. In fact, Shen Yuan’s eyes had started to become blurry after Lin Qinghuan left, and now she could only see a patch of darkness.
“Shen Yuan, are you cold?”
Gu Shiwei suddenly sat on the sofa, squeezing onto the single seat with Shen Yuan.
Shen Yuan was too thin. Her body beneath the shirt was fragile and delicate, as if a gust of wind could break her. When Gu Shiwei leaned in, she even felt the prominent bones of Shen Yuan painfully digging into her.
“A little cold.”
Shen Yuan’s back and face instantly broke out in cold sweat. She was currently shrouded in darkness, and even Gu Shiwei’s voice seemed to be coming from a very distant place.
Gu Shiwei half-hugged Shen Yuan’s shoulder, letting her lean into her embrace.
She quickened the pace of feeding the congee.
Gu Shiwei: “Careful, it’s hot.”
Shen Yuan: “Mhm.”
After half a bowl of hot congee, Shen Yuan felt less uncomfortable. The light slowly returned to her eyes, and the cold sweat on her body began to evaporate.
Gu Shiwei hugged her tighter. She had just showered and was still warm, emitting the fresh scent of lemon shower gel. Shen Yuan slowly warmed up nestled in her arms.
About ten minutes later, Shen Yuan blinked, her thick eyelashes creating a tempting arc in the air. She turned her head to look at Gu Shiwei and said, “Thank you, I’m okay now.”
Gu Shiwei stared at her pale cheeks and asked worriedly, “Is there anywhere else you feel uncomfortable?”
Shen Yuan shook her head.
After the low bl00d sugar episode, Shen Yuan was lethargic all morning. With her looking like that, Gu Shiwei couldn’t focus on work either, so she simply took Shen Yuan to the hospital for a check-up.
Shen Yuan was initially reluctant to go, but she only gave in when Gu Shiwei firmly insisted it was a required medical examination before an employee’s official onboarding.
It was already noon after all the tests were completed. Gu Shiwei took Shen Yuan to a nearby Western restaurant for lunch. When the food arrived, Gu Shiwei specifically instructed the waiter to bring an extra pair of chopsticks for Shen Yuan.
But Shen Yuan didn’t even look at the chopsticks, skillfully picking up a knife and fork to cut her steak.
Gu Shiwei suddenly lowered her head, looking thoughtful at the sight.
“Shen Yuan, you came so far from home alone, don’t your parents worry about you?”
Shen Yuan was a Southerner, and Jinghai was very far from the South. How could her parents bear to let such a frail, sickly, and rather introverted person travel far alone?
Moreover, based on Gu Shiwei’s observation, Shen Yuan’s posture when using a knife and fork was extremely standard. It would be difficult to be so graceful unless she had been taught table etiquette from a young age.
People who frequently eat Western cuisine should not have a poor family background. What reason led Shen Yuan to leave home and seek a livelihood in Jinghai, so far away?
Shen Yuan: “My birth parents are no longer around.”
Gu Shiwei’s action of cutting her steak suddenly paused.
“I’m sorry.”
Shen Yuan: “It’s fine.”
Shen Yuan’s voice was very calm. She lowered her head, so Gu Shiwei couldn’t see her expression, but she could sense that Shen Yuan probably didn’t want to elaborate. Gu Shiwei closed her mouth, and they finished the rest of the steak in silence.
After lunch, Gu Shiwei took Shen Yuan to a specialty store to buy a sports watch. This watch could monitor heart rate, steps, calories, and other information. Gu Shiwei set it up and directly linked it to her own phone.
Gu Shiwei: “Give me your hand.”
Shen Yuan held out her hand, and Gu Shiwei helped her put the clearly expensive watch on her wrist.
Gu Shiwei: “You must exercise for at least an hour every day from now on. I will use this watch to supervise you.”
When Shen Yuan heard Gu Shiwei say she must exercise for at least an hour every day, she instantly felt life draining out of her, but she also understood that Gu Shiwei wasn’t deliberately making things difficult for her; it was simply because her health was genuinely poor.
Shen Yuan: “Okay.”
In the afternoon, Gu Shiwei took Shen Yuan to buy some clothes and daily necessities. It was nearly six o’clock when they finished shopping and returned home. The housekeeper had prepared dinner for them in advance. Shen Yuan felt alive again only after finishing her meal.
Going out was exhausting. Shen Yuan was puzzled how Gu Shiwei managed to stick to her daily outdoor runs. They were about the same age, but Gu Shiwei had so much more energy than her.
Shen Yuan sighed.
Gu Shiwei had long noticed Shen Yuan’s gaze. She raised an eyebrow slightly and said with a smile, “We’ve had a tiring day, so we won’t go out tonight. Shen Yuan, get some rest early tonight. We have work tomorrow.”
“Okay.” Shen Yuan said, “You rest early too.”
After saying goodnight to each other, they each returned to their rooms.
Shen Yuan dealt with the unread messages on her phone and then recorded Gu Shiwei’s expenses on her for the day.
After completing these tasks, she washed up and slept soundly until morning.
When she woke up in the morning, Shen Yuan sat on the bed hugging her duvet, spacing out. It had been a long time since she had slept so well. Before, she would wake up a few times every night, or she would have insomnia, staying awake until dawn, or tossing and turning all night, plagued by nightmares.
It had only been a few days since she arrived, but Shen Yuan seemed to have grown accustomed to living with Gu Shiwei, and even her sleep quality had improved greatly.
It must be because of the daily exercise, Shen Yuan thought.
Shen Yuan sat on the bed for ten minutes. After regaining her composure, she got out of bed, washed up, and left the room.
“You’re awake. Come and have breakfast.”
Gu Shiwei was about to take the toasted bread and sausages to the warmer, but seeing Shen Yuan emerge from her room, she placed them directly on the table.
On the table, besides the bread and sausages, there were also soy milk, shrimp dumplings, and pumpkin congee. Shen Yuan licked her lips and opened her mouth a little awkwardly, “Miss Gu, how about we take turns cooking from now on?”
Gu Shiwei: “No need. Just tell me what you want to eat, and I’ll arrange it.”
“These hands of yours are for painting, don’t let them touch kitchen grease.”
Gu Shiwei’s gaze landed on Shen Yuan’s hands.
Shen Yuan’s fingers were long and clean, appearing delicate yet possessing strength.
A beautiful pair of hands, very suitable for playing the piano.
“It’s fine.”
When Shen Yuan worked part-time, she could single-handedly lift dozens of pounds. Forget cooking, she had done messy, exhausting jobs like washing dishes, sweeping, and wiping tables. It was winter then, and she had to keep her hands in the water even with chilblains.
Shen Yuan felt a little apologetic and said, “Then can I do the dishes?”
Gu Shiwei, without question, pulled Shen Yuan’s wrist and pressed her into a seat: “Washing dishes is the dishwasher’s job. What would the dishwasher do if you did it? You don’t have to do anything. Just live here comfortably. We have a robot for sweeping, a washing machine for laundry. Just tell me what you want to eat. You don’t have to worry about paying me; the company will reimburse all your expenses during this period.”
Shen Yuan: “Ah… is that so…”
Is Zhaoyang this humane? Will it really not go bankrupt?
“Hurry and eat, it’ll get cold.”
Gu Shiwei finished speaking and pushed a bowl of pumpkin congee towards Shen Yuan.
The pumpkin congee was sweet. Shen Yuan’s eyes narrowed after taking a bite.
Although she already knew Gu Shiwei was a great cook, Shen Yuan was still pleasantly surprised.
Shen Yuan looked at Gu Shiwei, her lips pursed, and hesitated for a long time before praising her: “Miss Gu, the congee you made… is exceptionally delicious.”
Gu Shiwei was stunned. She hadn’t expected the usually quiet Shen Yuan to actively compliment her.
Gu Shiwei usually didn’t eat pumpkin congee. This pot of sweet congee was specially made for Shen Yuan. She had cooked it for a long time, even cutting short her morning run time, but Shen Yuan’s one phrase, “exceptionally delicious,” instantly made her feel like all the effort was worth it.
“Then eat more.”
To not let Gu Shiwei’s kindness go to waste, Shen Yuan finished the entire bowl of pumpkin congee.
Gu Shiwei used the serving chopsticks to place a shrimp dumpling in Shen Yuan’s bowl and asked her, “Can you still eat anything else?”
“I’ll be full after this shrimp dumpling.”
Shen Yuan put the shrimp dumpling into her mouth, her cheeks puffing out, looking a bit like a hamster feeding.
Gu Shiwei smiled at the sight. She also put down her chopsticks and said in a very good mood, “No rush, it doesn’t take long to get to Zhaoyang from here. We’ll go to the company together later.”
Shen Yuan suddenly remembered that Gu Shiwei drove a sports car. She waved her hand: “I’ll just take the bus.”
“Then I’ll take the bus with you.”
Gu Shiwei put the car key back.
Shen Yuan: “???”
In the end, Shen Yuan still got into Gu Shiwei’s car.
However, today Gu Shiwei drove a different car—a Rolls-Royce.
How could Shen Yuan let a young miss like her take the bus with her? So, no matter how expensive Gu Shiwei’s car was, she could only bite the bullet and get in.
As the car door closed, Gu Shiwei suddenly leaned closer.
Shen Yuan’s breathing hitched, watching her slowly approaching face, feeling a little lost.
Gu Shiwei extended her arm, and Shen Yuan’s seatbelt was pulled down and clicked shut.
Just as Shen Yuan breathed a sigh of relief, Gu Shiwei leaned in again. She took a deep breath and said, “Shen Yuan, you smell so good. What brand of perfume are you wearing?”
Shen Yuan shifted to the right, her fingers tightly gripping the seatbelt. She tried to sound calm: “I’m not wearing perfume.”
“Is it the shampoo’s scent?”
Gu Shiwei leaned in closer to take another sniff, confirming it was indeed the scent of the new shampoo.
Shen Yuan’s hair was very long, with a natural curl at the ends, and it was pure black, making her skin look even fairer.
Gu Shiwei stared at Shen Yuan’s profile and suddenly, as if driven by a strange impulse, extended a finger and poked her cheek: “Don’t be so serious every day. You’re so pretty, why don’t you smile?”
Shen Yuan didn’t have much flesh on her face to begin with, and where Gu Shiwei poked, a dimple-like indentation formed. Gu Shiwei suddenly got addicted to poking and tapped her a few more times. Although Shen Yuan looked aloof, her cheeks were quite soft, like marshmallows.
“Drip, drip, drip—”
“Irregular heart rate detected—”
