The Moon Shines on Me (GL) - Chapter 2
The next day, Shen Yuan once again boarded the Route 128 bus.
This time, there was no young heiress suddenly getting on.
Shen Yuan slowly nibbled on a red bean paste bun with her head lowered.
After finishing her breakfast, she routinely leaned against the window to rest her eyes.
About half an hour later, Shen Yuan got off the bus and walked into the company that had piqued her curiosity for several years—Zhaoyang.
As the elevator ascended, Shen Yuan suddenly saw a familiar figure standing behind her reflected in the elevator wall.
That person was looking at her with a smile.
“What a coincidence, did you pass the interview?”
Gu Shiwei was in a well-tailored suit, and the watch on her wrist seemed to have been replaced again. The brand was unrecognizable, but it was even flashier than the one from yesterday.
“Mhm.” Shen Yuan nodded, staring at the figure reflected in the elevator wall.
“Ding—”
When the elevator doors opened, Shen Yuan was the first to step out. Today, she was wearing a new Chinese-style long-sleeved shirt, black loose wide-leg pants, and white sneakers, a look completely different from the professional elite image she had on the bus that day with the white shirt and suit pants.
Gu Shiwei watched her relaxed back for a few seconds, her eyes flickering with some unreadable emotion.
Shen Yuan had just started, and the company had arranged someone to guide her through the business. After receiving her employee badge, Shen Yuan was led to her workstation.
The person responsible for training her was a fresh graduate concept artist. She had joined the company a few months before Shen Yuan and was already broadly familiar with the workflow.
“You’re Shen Yuan? I’ll call you Yuan Yuan—Sis—then.”
Lu Qingwan suddenly changed her address after seeing Shen Yuan’s age column. She had thought Shen Yuan, who looked so young, was about the same age as her, but unexpectedly, she was an “elder” from way back.
Shen Yuan extended her hand: “Hello, Miss Lu.”
Shen Yuan was from the south; her hometown was in Jiangcheng. Jinghai City was a northern city, and most people here were a head taller than Shen Yuan. Coupled with her fair skin and small face, she looked like a recent college graduate, which had just fooled Lu Qingwan with her refined and delicate appearance.
Lu Qingwan stared at Shen Yuan’s cultured and graceful face for a long time, then scratched her head and said, “Just call me Qingwan.”
Lu Qingwan had a good personality, with a unique clarity and simplicity typical of a college student, and Shen Yuan felt very comfortable interacting with her.
The day passed quickly. Their company clocked out at six, operating on a voluntary overtime system. Shen Yuan had a part-time job at seven, so she picked up her cloth bag and prepared to leave the company exactly at six.
“Yuan Yuan Sis, are you leaving?”
Lu Qingwan suddenly tugged at her sleeve, her eyes wide with astonishment.
Shen Yuan held up her phone screen displaying the time as six o’clock and asked, “Otherwise?”
Otherwise? Of course, it’s overtime! Lu Qingwan had “voluntarily” worked overtime every day since joining to leave a good impression on the management. She hadn’t expected Shen Yuan to be so “bold” on her first day, leaving right on the dot!
She felt both envious and admiring.
“I have something to do, so I’m leaving first.”
Shen Yuan said and quietly slipped out of the office.
Although the official knock-off time was six, very few people actually left at that time. When Shen Yuan walked into the elevator, there was already one person inside—the woman she had met on the bus.
Shen Yuan was initially surprised but then felt relieved when she remembered she was just an intern. Looking at her, she didn’t seem to be short of money; she was probably just working to experience life.
She was completely different from a regular ‘salary slave’ like Shen Yuan, like they belonged to two different worlds.
“Your name is Shen Yuan?”
Gu Shiwei glanced at the employee badge on Shen Yuan’s chest and saw her name and position: Shen Yuan—Concept Artist Assistant (Probationary Period).
“Mhm.”
Gu Shiwei suddenly stepped forward to stand beside Shen Yuan: “It’s exactly time to clock off. How about I treat you to dinner? My name is Gu Shiwei. Thank you for the incident the other day.”
“No need, I have something to do, I’ll be going.”
Shen Yuan was in a hurry to catch the bus, so she walked quickly.
Gu Shiwei stared at Shen Yuan’s hasty departing back, feeling a little baffled. Did she look that intimidating? Why did it feel like every time they met, Shen Yuan wished she could grow wings and fly away from her side?
Gu Shiwei was an undeniable beauty, and her personality was not as awful as other rich second-generation types. Thus, both men and women liked to flock around her. This was the first time she had encountered someone like Shen Yuan, who kept pushing her away.
She seemed so gentle and well-behaved, but her personality was… quite distant.
Gu Shiwei had recently returned to the country, and tonight there was a party to celebrate. After work, she went straight to a high-end bar.
When she arrived, most people were already there. The private room was filled with young men and women.
They were all Gu Shiwei’s childhood friends, and when they saw her, they all started urging her to have a drink.
“No, I drove myself,” Gu Shiwei replied.
After she spoke, she found a familiar figure under the dazzling lights and sat down.
“Miss Gu is truly hard to invite. You’ve been back for a week, and we’re only just meeting.”
The speaker was Lin Qinghuan, Gu Shiwei’s childhood friend and bestie. They hadn’t seen each other for a whole year.
Gu Shiwei, the only daughter of the Chairman of the Qingfeng Group, had studied abroad for two years during her doctoral studies. Two years later, she returned to the country and entered Qingfeng Group’s subsidiary, Zhaoyang, as CEO. Gu Shiwei had looks, money, and intelligence; she was the “child of another family” praised by the parents of their rich circle.
“I can’t help it, the company is too busy.”
As a new official, Gu Shiwei’s position as a temporary CEO was not so easy to hold.
Hearing Gu Shiwei say this, everyone became restless: “Your Gu family is the richest in Jinghai. Why are you still working so hard?”
“I have to work hard; I’m the only daughter of the Gu family.”
Originally, when Gu Shiwei graduated with her undergraduate degree, her mother, Madam Gu Qingfeng, wanted her to join the group.
However, Gu Shiwei’s ambition was not in running a company. She later pursued a master’s degree and spent two years studying for her doctorate in Australia.
Gu Shiwei picked up the fruit juice and took a sip, then said after a moment, “I have no choice. There are billions of assets waiting for me to inherit.”
Gu Shiwei had evaded it for six years, and those six years were already her mother’s bottom line. Anymore, and she’d risk getting her legs broken.
Everyone in the room, hearing Gu Shiwei’s words, suddenly found the fine wine in their cups tasteless: “You despicable capitalists, we’ll fight you rich people!”
Gu Shiwei belatedly realized she had incurred public wrath and quickly said, “I’m paying tonight. Order whatever you want.”
Everyone: “Except for the rich Miss Gu!”
The private room became lively again. They dispersed at half-past ten in the evening. Gu Shiwei hadn’t drunk any alcohol, so she drove herself home.
About twenty minutes into her drive, Gu Shiwei suddenly saw a familiar figure by the side of the road.
Shen Yuan was slowly walking back after finishing her part-time job. In her hand, she carried a cup of caramel pearl milk tea, a treat from the sister at the store. After walking a short distance, a bright red Ferrari suddenly pulled up in front of her.
Shen Yuan gave it a blank look, then walked around the car and continued forward. About ten seconds later, a tall beauty wearing silver-rimmed glasses suddenly stepped out of the luxury car. She smelled of alcohol, but her face showed no signs of intoxication. Her chestnut-colored wavy hair was now tied up, exposing her delicate neck and collarbone.
Gu Shiwei walked up to Shen Yuan in two strides, looking down at her, and asked, “Shen Yuan, it’s so late. Why are you wandering around on the street?”
Shen Yuan looked up at her strangely: “Miss Gu, are we close?”
Gu Shiwei leaned against the car with her arms crossed, her light blue eyes fixed on Shen Yuan: “We’ve run into each other so many times, and we’re colleagues at the same company. Doesn’t that count as being close?”
Gu Shiwei wasn’t sure what was wrong with her. In the past, she hated it when people tried to climb into her social circle, but with Shen Yuan, it seemed like she was the one constantly reaching out.
The crucial point was that Shen Yuan was indifferent to her overtures.
“No, I only learned your name today.” Shen Yuan said, then prepared to leave with her milk tea. But as soon as she took a step, her wrist was grabbed.
Gu Shiwei held the slender wrist and continued, “Shen Yuan, I still owe you a meal. When are you free? Maybe we’ll get close after dinner—”
“Splat—”
The hand Gu Shiwei was holding jerked violently, and the milk tea suddenly dropped to the ground. The next moment, Shen Yuan quickly pulled her hand back, tugging the cuff of her shirt down to cover the wrist that Gu Shiwei had just touched.
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to. I’ll go buy you another one. What flavor do you like? Caramel pearl?”
Gu Shiwei hadn’t expected Shen Yuan’s reaction to be so drastic. She seemed not to like being touched; the way she pulled her hand back suggested she had been greatly startled.
Shen Yuan looked down at the broken milk tea and suddenly said in a very small voice, “Just pay me back the money.”
“What?”
Gu Shiwei hadn’t heard clearly.
“I said, just pay me back the money.” Shen Yuan looked up at Gu Shiwei, her eyes calm and placid like a clear spring. She pointed to the milk tea on the ground and said, “The bus fare plus the milk tea costs twenty yuan in total. Once you pay me back, we’re even.”
Gu Shiwei rarely frowned. Shen Yuan’s attempts to draw a line between them were too obvious. Was she that unlikable? Her face was decent, after all. Why did Shen Yuan dislike her so much?
“Let’s exchange WeChat,” Gu Shiwei said calmly. “I’ll transfer it to you on WeChat.”
This time, Shen Yuan didn’t refuse. She stiffly pulled out her phone from her cloth bag, opened WeChat, and displayed her payment QR code in front of Gu Shiwei.
“You scan me. My camera is broken,” Gu Shiwei said and then brought up her ‘Add Friend’ QR code.
Shen Yuan paused after scanning it. She froze for a few seconds before finally tapping the “Send Friend Request.”
Gu Shiwei instantly accepted. She looked at the user with the kitten profile picture and couldn’t help but smile: “I’ll transfer it when I get back. Come on, I’ll take you home.”
Shen Yuan looked at her luxury car, hesitant to speak, and finally said, “No need. The apartment I rent is nearby.”
Gu Shiwei assessed Shen Yuan’s frail body and her “not-too-safe-looking” face, and resolutely said, “I’ve held you up for so long, and it’s so late. I can’t let you go home alone as a girl.”
“Get in.”
Gu Shiwei gently pulled Shen Yuan’s sleeve and ushered her into the passenger seat.
Gu Shiwei’s passenger seat was never occupied; Shen Yuan was the first. She was about to lean over to help Shen Yuan fasten her seatbelt, but when she turned her head, Shen Yuan had already skillfully clicked it into place.
“No. 109, Xingfu Road. Thank you for the trouble.”
