Chapter 1: 001 “Do I Need To Take Responsibility, Eldest Miss Gu?”
“Ugh… it hurts so much…”
Gu Linlang curled up in agony. Her heart felt like it was being violently seized and kneaded, every beat bringing a tearing pain. Her breathing became rapid and fragmented, and her clothes were instantly soaked with cold sweat.
Just then, a clear and gentle voice sounded in her ear: “If you feel bad, take your medicine, Gu Linlang.”
As the voice drew closer, a faint, elegant fragrance subtly invaded her nostrils. The scent was sweet and comforting, providing a momentary sense of security.
Gu Linlang painfully opened her eyes, her vision slowly clearing from the blur.
!!!
Isn’t that Qi Wanyang? The nemesis who always looked down on her! From childhood to her career, this woman was always one step ahead, as if she had a cheat code! Most outrageous of all, they were born on the same day, same month, same year, and had been constantly compared their whole lives!
But the Qi Wanyang in front of her bore none of her usual arrogant and cold demeanor. Those eyes were full of worry and anxiety. Gu Linlang couldn’t believe her eyes. She felt she was either hallucinating from the pain or this “stinky fox” was putting on an act to mock her.
But speaking of “medicine”…
In a trance, memories flooded back—
Gu Linlang felt like she was back in that magnificent banquet hall, the crystal chandelier blinding her eyes. The noise of music and laughter gradually faded, the last image in her mind being her face contorted by angina in the restroom mirror, a rolling pill bottle on the floor, and that vicious whisper: “You deserved it.”
She actually died just like that? On her twenty-sixth birthday? And was killed by someone swapping her emergency medication?
Gu Linlang couldn’t believe it, but thankfully, heaven gave her a chance to live again.
Wait, what did the Rebirth System tell her? But the pain in her heart was too intense; she couldn’t concentrate. She only knew this was her chance to be reborn, and she had to seize it. She didn’t want to die again.
What was going on with this Qi Wanyang, who was telling her to take medicine? Why was she here? Was she trying to harm her?
No. Although Qi Wanyang was a treacherous and cunning “stinky fox,” given her pride, she probably wouldn’t stoop to such a base method.
“Gu Linlang, be good. Take the medicine, and the pain will stop.” Qi Wanyang’s voice sounded again, gentle and coaxing, which Gu Linlang somehow found surprisingly comforting. She had never imagined the lofty Qi Wanyang would use such a tone with her.
But in the next second, she extinguished that feeling. Even if Qi Wanyang wasn’t the murderer, she was still her most hated nemesis. How could she be seduced by a few gentle words? Gu Linlang struggled to push away the pill offered to her mouth, her eyes as vigilant as a startled cat.
Qi Wanyang’s brow arched, clearly not expecting the rejection. But when she saw Gu Linlang’s pale face and blue lips, her expression instantly darkened.
“I would never stoop to taking advantage of someone’s weakness.” Qi Wanyang shook the pill in her hand, her tone turning dangerous: “Gu Linlang, if you won’t take the medicine, I don’t mind feeding you myself.”
Seeing that Gu Linlang still refused to cooperate, Qi Wanyang didn’t hesitate. She pinched the girl’s nose, and the moment Gu Linlang instinctively opened her mouth to breathe, mouth-to-mouth, she transferred the pill into her mouth, using her tongue to gently push the pill precisely under Gu Linlang’s tongue.
“Ugh…” As the spicy mint taste exploded in her mouth, Gu Linlang was startled by the warmth covering her lips, but what shocked her more was that Qi Wanyang’s tongue had entered her mouth. She widened her eyes, watching the long lashes close to her flutter like butterfly wings.
Soon, a burning sensation shot up from the base of her tongue, and Gu Linlang couldn’t help but frown. Qi Wanyang seemed to have been waiting for this reaction. Only after confirming the medicine was taking effect did she slowly pull away.
As their lips parted, Gu Linlang fleetingly tasted a faint sweetness. But before she could process the moment, Qi Wanyang held a cup of warm water to her lips.
“Drink it yourself. Otherwise, I don’t mind feeding you again…”
This threat was effective. Gu Linlang immediately grabbed the cup with her free hand and gulped the water down, swallowing the un-dissolved pill bits. As for why only one hand was free…
Gu Linlang looked down. The index finger of her other hand was clipped by a pulse oximeter sensor, and a car-mounted monitor was securely fastened in the back seat, displaying her heart rate, bl00d oxygen, bl00d pressure, and respiratory rate. She was half-lying on the car’s back seat, with Qi Wanyang sitting right next to her.
Qi Wanyang’s hand rested lightly on her wrist, as if afraid she might move. It wasn’t until the frantically jumping heart rate curve on the monitor slowly stabilized that she let go and removed the pulse oximeter from Gu Linlang’s finger.
Even though Qi Wanyang was a top medical student and the CEO of their Longcheng-based pharmaceutical company, Qinan Pharmaceuticals, did she really have to feed her the medicine like that?! Gu Linlang was speechless.
Wait, how did she end up in Qi Wanyang’s car?
Fragmented memories suddenly flooded her mind. Gu Linlang remembered that when she was reborn, she had an angina attack right in the hotel’s backyard rose garden. Qi Wanyang had appeared from nowhere and helped her take the medication.
As for how she got into the car…
Gu Linlang’s temples throbbed, but she vaguely recalled that Qi Wanyang had said she was going to call her dad. She fiercely refused, not wanting to worry him. Then, she thought she heard people approaching the rose garden, so she urgently told Qi Wanyang to take her away…
But why would she urgently tell Qi Wanyang to take her away?
Her head started to hurt again; she simply couldn’t recall anything more.
No matter what, why was Qi Wanyang, that cursed nemesis, always showing up in front of her? Gu Linlang remembered that they rarely met after Qi Wanyang returned to the country.
And the most infuriating thing was!
Qi Wanyang just took her first kiss!
“Hmph! You talk about never stooping to take advantage of someone’s weakness.” Gu Linlang was practically gritting her teeth: “Qi Wanyang, you are just as hypocritical, cunning, and shameless as ever, taking my first kiss!”
Qi Wanyang’s lips curved into a subtle smile: “You’re strong enough to hurl insults. It seems you’re fine now.”
Only when Qi Wanyang said this did Gu Linlang realize that the chest pain had significantly subsided, and her breathing had become smoother. She turned her head to look out the window. The night was hazy, with traffic and flashing neon lights, making it quite lively.
Gu Linlang quickly scanned the car, confirming she was in Qi Wanyang’s extended luxury car. The leather seats emitted a faint sandalwood scent, and the overhead ambient lights cast a warm yellow glow, drawing a subtle line between her and Qi Wanyang.
The car was spacious, yet the subtle fragrance on Qi Wanyang’s body constantly drifted into her nose.
Gu Linlang couldn’t help but look up. Tonight, Qi Wanyang was wearing a light purple long dress, perfectly tailored to outline her figure. The patterns on the dress clearly screamed high-end custom-made, radiating wealth and prestige. Her skin was so pale it glowed, giving her an air of coldness, yet those captivating Taohua (peach blossom) eyes were very alluring. Her glossy long hair was secured with an exquisite hairpin, revealing a slender neck and beautiful collarbones. Crystal earrings flashed under the light, making her look like a queen.
Suddenly, Qi Wanyang leaned half-bent, standing up. Gu Linlang immediately felt a sense of being looked down upon and instinctively tensed her body.
Qi Wanyang ignored her wariness, leaned forward, and gently lifted her chin.
She’s gotten prettier in the few years they haven’t seen each other. Her skin was fair with a slight blush, like a peeled egg; her eyelashes were long and thick, fluttering gently; her large, round apricot eyes were currently filled only with the reflection of Qi Wanyang; and her lips, slightly red from the recent kiss, looked particularly inviting.
“You said that was your first kiss.” Qi Wanyang lowered her voice, which was soft yet magnetic, carrying an irresistible charm that made Gu Linlang’s heart beat a little faster.
But Gu Linlang quickly feigned composure, raising her voice in a retort: “What if it was?”
Qi Wanyang smiled, her peach blossom eyes alluring, like rippling autumn water: “Then do I need to take responsibility, Eldest Miss Gu?”
Gu Linlang’s cheeks flushed slightly. She angrily slapped Qi Wanyang’s hand away, pretending to be calm: “Spare me!” She then raised her voice and shouted: “Stop the car! I want to get out!”
Qi Wanyang raised an eyebrow, a cryptic smile playing on her lips: “Are you sure you want to get out here?”
Gu Linlang crossed her arms, snorting with a hint of arrogance: “More than sure. There’s nothing in Longcheng that I, Gu Linlang, can’t handle.”
Qi Wanyang chuckled and shook her head, saying nothing more, but raising her voice to the driver: “Uncle Jian, pull over.”
The driver, Uncle Jian, looked confused: “Miss Qi, aren’t we going to the hospital?”
Qi Wanyang looked at the flushed and restless Gu Linlang, smiling faintly: “No need. Eldest Miss Gu is quite spirited now.”
“But this is…” The driver was interrupted before he could finish: “Uncle Jian, Eldest Miss Gu wants to get out, so we must respectfully obey.”
The driver said no more and quickly stopped the car. Gu Linlang didn’t look at Qi Wanyang again. She stepped out of the car, head held high, with an air of pride and confidence.
Qi Wanyang’s car didn’t linger. As soon as Gu Linlang got out, the car sped away.
The surroundings suddenly fell silent. Gu Linlang realized that the place she had gotten out was a highway. A cold gust of wind hit her, and she involuntarily shivered.
“So what if it’s a highway?” Gu Linlang wasn’t worried. She reached into her bag for her phone, preparing to call her dad. One call, and no matter how busy or far away her father was, he would send a car for her immediately.
However, before Gu Linlang could even light up her phone screen, she suddenly felt that familiar chest tightness and pain again. Her breathing became difficult.
“No way… Why again?” Gu Linlang painfully crouched down, clutching her chest tightly.
