- Chapter 13 - "Who's Her Wife?"
Chapter 13: 013 “Who’s Her Wife?”
Xu Yiru steadily drove the car, answering: “Don’t worry, I’ve passed along everything. She’s so happy you like the bracelet. As for the invitation… don’t rush. When the time is right, she’ll naturally come to see you.”
Gu Linlang looked at Xu Yiru curiously and continued to probe: “Is the person who gave me the bracelet a man or a woman?”
Xu Yiru smiled slyly and countered: “Do you want them to be a man or a woman?”
Gu Linlang touched her nose and laughed: “Actually, gender doesn’t matter. I’m just curious. Yiru sis, just give me a little hint.”
Xu Yiru shrugged, maintaining her air of mystery: “Same answer as before. When the time is ripe, they will naturally appear before you.”
Seeing that Xu Yiru was watertight and wouldn’t give in, Gu Linlang pouted and stopped pressing the issue, turning her gaze out the window instead.
The sky outside the window was as blue as if it had been washed, clean and bright. A few white clouds drifted lazily, sometimes gathering into clusters, sometimes scattering into threads, making them impossible to grasp.
After arriving home, Gu Linlang initially wanted to invite Xu Yiru in to sit for a while, but Xu Yiru said she had to go back to the hospital later and declined her kindness.
After watching Xu Yiru’s car leave, Gu Linlang slowly strolled inside.
Back in her bedroom, Gu Linlang picked up the medicine Qi Wanyang had prepared for her and the warm tip note she had written.
Qi Wanyang’s handwriting was still clear and strong. The note simply reminded her to cold compress regularly, elevate her feet, and only apply the bruise-dissipating ointment after 24 hours. It also detailed the application steps and precautions, emphasizing not to use multiple topical medications at once.
Gu Linlang wanted her injuries to recover as much as possible before her dad came home.
So, she strictly followed Qi Wanyang’s instructions. She took three ice packs from the fridge, found some clean spare towels, carefully stacked her blankets, gently crossed her feet over them, and sat on the bed to start icing her injuries.
While icing, Gu Linlang picked up her phone and browsed various news sites.
To her surprise, neither the local gossip entertainment news nor the finance or livelihood sections mentioned her series of embarrassing incidents at Xinyue Plaza.
She raised an eyebrow slightly, then clicked on the “Longcheng’s Four Flowers” group chat. Messages surged like a tide; she had over three hundred new notifications the moment she opened it.
Weren’t these three busy as can be last night? How are they so free to chat in the group?
The memory of them ganging up to abandon her to Qi Wanyang last night immediately sparked annoyance.
Just as she was about to swipe away the group chat, a message from Zhao Xiaoxuan caught her eye: “Sisters, latest news! Qi Wanyang spent a fortune buying off all the gossip media in Longcheng, banning reports of Linlang’s embarrassing moments at Xinyue Plaza.”
Hu Xinyi immediately chimed in, her tone full of admiration: “It didn’t actually cost much! I heard Qi Wanyang used highly effective methods—a mix of persuasion and pressure—and those reporters and editors are all too scared to write anything reckless now.”
Hong Hui sent a “I’m shipping this” meme and excitedly added: “Qi Wanyang is too dominant! She’s totally a wife-protecting fanatic!”
Gu Linlang’s mouth twitched when she saw this. She mumbled: “I agree with ‘dominant,’ but ‘wife-protecting fanatic’? Who’s her wife?”
Even as she said that, the little things Qi Wanyang did to take care of her last night involuntarily surfaced in her mind. A smile she didn’t even notice crept onto her lips.
Since someone had already taken care of the gossip media, Gu Linlang stopped dwelling on it.
However, she decided that if Hong Hui and the others didn’t apologize for last night, she would definitely not surface in the group chat.
Gu Linlang switched to her graduate school classmate group, where everyone was enthusiastically discussing graduation theses and internships.
Gu Linlang mentally checked the timeline. She should have already chosen her topic by now.
In her previous life, her thesis had been quite excellent; even her advisor had praised it.
She clearly remembered the suggestions the professors gave during her defense, which she could now use to improve her thesis this time around.
As for the internship, in her previous life, she had joined her family’s company as arranged by her dad. But she was coddled the entire time and didn’t learn any real skills.
This life, she decided to change her environment and properly train herself. Where to go specifically, she still needed to consider.
Thus, Gu Linlang alternated between icing her injuries every few hours and revising her graduation thesis.
Time passed quickly with the sound of her keyboard tapping. Before she knew it, it was evening.
“Sis, I’m home!” A clear teenage voice instantly broke the silence in the house.
Gu Linlang knew exactly who it was the moment she heard the voice, and the corners of her mouth curled up unconsciously.
She had just opened her bedroom door when a boy half a head taller than her rushed into her arms like a cannonball.
“Chengze…” Gu Linlang rubbed her brother’s fuzzy head, her voice trembling slightly.
This was her paternal half-brother, Gu Chengze. Although they had different mothers, they were closer than full siblings.
Seeing her adorable, sweet brother again after her rebirth, her nose suddenly stung.
“I haven’t seen you in a week! I missed you so much!” Gu Chengze smiled broadly, his cheerfulness dazzling.
Her brother was still a second-year high school student, an overachiever who excelled in all aspects. He lived at school and could only come home on weekends. Every time he returned, he stuck to her like glue.
“Sis, I’m sorry, the coach wouldn’t let me take leave for the training camp the other day. I couldn’t even make it back for your birthday party…” Gu Chengze pouted, looking frustrated.
Her brother was a top student at Longcheng’s most strict key high school, and his coach frequently kept him for training camps.
Gu Linlang understood, of course: “It’s okay. Birthday parties are just networking; they’re boring anyway. When you have free time, I’ll take you out to play, just the two of us.”
“Mhm!” Gu Chengze nodded hard. “But I promise, I’ll definitely be there for your birthday next year.”
The mention of her 26th birthday suddenly made Gu Linlang recall her tragic death in the previous life, and a chill went down her spine.
“Haha, next year for Linlang’s 26th birthday, Chengze will also turn 18 and be an adult,” Gu Hongyi’s hearty voice came from the doorway. He was accompanied by a woman in her forties who was still quite attractive. “Yes, Chengze is finally all grown up,” the woman gently added.
“Dad, Aunt Lirong.” This was Gu Linlang’s first full family gathering after her rebirth. Looking at the three people in front of her, she suddenly felt as distant as if a lifetime separated them. Her voice was soft, “I’ve missed you all so much.”
“Missing us but still not coming home,” Gu Hongyi said, looking at his daughter’s red-rimmed eyes. He patted her shoulder affectionately. “Since Chengze is home for the break, let’s go to Tailai Court for a reunion dinner, just the four of us.”
Although the Gu family’s chef was excellent, comparable to a head chef at a grand hotel, the Gu family sometimes chose to enjoy a different culinary experience at high-end restaurants.
Tailai Court’s Seafood Casserole was Gu Linlang’s favorite, so while Gu Hongyi claimed the dinner was to welcome his son, he was really thinking about his daughter’s preference.
Gu Linlang’s mouth watered at the mention of the Seafood Casserole. Gu Chengze didn’t mind his dad’s favoritism toward his sister, and Sun Lirong was long used to it. She smiled and pulled out her phone: “I’ll call Boss Lin at Tailai Court to reserve a private room right now.”
“Yeah!” The siblings high-fived happily, showing their perfect synchronization.
As happy as she was, Gu Linlang suddenly thought of Qi Wanyang. That woman… she wouldn’t happen to be at Tailai Court too, would she?
Please, please don’t let any “Intimate Contact Mission” trigger tonight. She absolutely didn’t want to make a fool of herself in front of her family, let alone ruin this rare family reunion.
To be on the safe side, before leaving, Gu Linlang purposely returned to her bedroom, dug out Qi Wanyang’s business card from her nightstand, quickly saved the number to her phone, and tossed the card back into the drawer.
But what she feared most came true. Halfway through dinner, the System prompt suddenly popped up.
Gu Linlang nearly dropped her chopsticks when the System finished reporting the “Intimate Contact Mission.”
Is this broken System deliberately trying to mess with her?
