Chapter 2: 002 “Host, Are You Happy With The Beginner’s Welfare?”
At the same time, Qi Wanyang’s expression in the car wasn’t great either.
She had been away from Longcheng for four years and hadn’t seen Gu Linlang in four years. She hadn’t expected that when they met again, the girl showed no surprise, let alone any missing her.
Qi Wanyang gave a self-mocking tug to the corner of her mouth. Of course. She and Gu Linlang were no longer the inseparable, innocent childhood sweethearts they once were. Why would she expect the girl to miss her?
Coincidentally, today was not only Gu Linlang’s birthday but also her own, Qi Wanyang’s.
She had just returned to the country and heard that the Gu family had booked the city’s most luxurious seaside banquet hall for Gu Linlang’s birthday celebration. Driven by some impulse, she wanted to take a look and had even prepared a gift, thinking she would give it to Gu Linlang regardless of whether she was welcome or not.
She did see the person, but the gift remained undelivered. Because she saw Gu Linlang curled up in the rose garden behind the banquet hall, her face pale, tightly clutching her chest—it was clearly a heart attack.
“Where’s your medicine?” Qi Wanyang rushed over, taking two steps at a time, and helped Gu Linlang up.
Gu Linlang’s scattered pupils slightly focused. She exhaled in a barely audible breath: “…I don’t know. I think… I didn’t bring it.”
Qi Wanyang nearly laughed in exasperation. After all these years, this girl still doesn’t know how to take care of herself. She swiftly pulled a spare medicine bottle from her handbag.
“Open your mouth.” Qi Wanyang ordered in a low, commanding tone that brooked no refusal.
Gu Linlang obediently put the pill in her mouth, her tongue accidentally brushing Qi Wanyang’s finger. The warm touch made Qi Wanyang’s fingertip tremble.
Thankfully, the medicine worked quickly. Seeing Gu Linlang’s complexion gradually return, the burden on Qi Wanyang’s heart finally lifted.
She then noticed a bottle of red wine and a nearly empty highball glass on the stone table and understood a little more.
Qi Wanyang shook her head helplessly.
“Uncle must be inside, right? I’ll call h—” Just as Qi Wanyang reached for her phone, Gu Linlang pressed down on her hand. Her ice-cold fingers trembled slightly, but even in her weakness, she was determined to be strong: “Don’t let my dad know.”
Before Qi Wanyang could respond, they heard footsteps approaching from a distance, and Gu Linlang’s expression suddenly changed.
“Take me away…” Gu Linlang’s cold fingers clamped onto Qi Wanyang’s wrist. Qi Wanyang was stunned. Did she see that correctly? The Eldest Miss Gu, who always held her chin high, actually had a look of pleading in her eyes?
Her body reacted faster than her brain. Qi Wanyang quickly wrapped an arm around Gu Linlang’s waist and half-helped, half-carried her away, stuffing her into the back seat of the car. But no sooner had she gotten in than Gu Linlang slumped into a dizzy state.
Qi Wanyang’s heart tightened. She immediately ordered the driver to head to the hospital, while simultaneously pulling out the car-mounted monitor and keeping a close watch on Gu Linlang’s condition.
But who would have thought that on the way to the hospital, Gu Linlang’s heart attack would flare up again? This time, she was even semi-conscious and refused to take the medicine. In a moment of urgency, Qi Wanyang resorted to mouth-to-mouth administration.
The medicine finally took effect, and Gu Linlang’s angina was once again suppressed. And Qi Wanyang had also seized the opportunity to get her “reward.”
“First kiss, huh?” Qi Wanyang gently touched her own full, rosy lips, her heart pounding.
However, the recovered Gu Linlang didn’t offer a single word of thanks, instead arguing with her with a look of disgust. Did she hate her so much that she’d rather get out on the highway and brave the cold wind than stay with her a moment longer?
Qi Wanyang was feeling a little down, but she still ordered: “Uncle Jian, turn right in a bit.”
Although they were on the highway, there was a right-hand fork not far ahead that would allow the car to turn back.
“Miss Qi, aren’t we going to Huating Hotel to see Young Master Lu? Turning right is going back, isn’t it?” The driver seemed confused.
“Uncle Jian, turn right.” Qi Wanyang didn’t explain, just reiterated the order. Although her tone was gentle, it carried an unyielding firmness. The driver stopped questioning and began to turn the steering wheel to the right.
Damn it! Did that jerk Qi Wanyang really feed her fake medicine? Otherwise, how could she explain this sudden angina?
Gu Linlang was curled up on the cold ground, her fingers digging deep into her chest as if this could relieve the unbearable pain. Every breath felt like thousands of steel needles piercing her lungs, making her vision blur.
Cold sweat rolled down her pale cheeks, and her carefully styled hair stuck to her forehead. Her usually vibrant face was now horribly contorted, and her lips were a shocking bluish-purple.
“WARNING! Insufficient heart vitality. Host, please return to Qi Wanyang’s side within 30 minutes.” Suddenly, a cold, mechanical voice sounded in her head.
Gu Linlang froze. Wasn’t this the lousy system that had given her rebirth? Like a drowning person grabbing a straw, she immediately pleaded for help. The system replied with the detachment of an AI customer service agent: “Host, the method has already been told to you.”
Gu Linlang gasped in pain, desperately trying to remember. She finally recalled what the system had said during her rebirth: “Host, the first person you see when you open your eyes is your life-saving benefactor. Remember to latch onto their thigh.”
“Are you saying… Qi Wanyang is my… life-saving benefactor?” Gu Linlang roared internally, her voice distorted by pain.
The system instantly replied: “Correct. Furthermore, the medicine she gave you earlier was fine. Your current heart attack was triggered because you activated the Beginner Mission. You’ll be fine as long as you complete the ‘Stick Close’ mission on time.”
“What the hell kind of mission is this? Punishment before I even start?” It was literally killing her. Gu Linlang was seeing black with rage.
The system remained emotionally devoid: “The Beginner Mission has a low tolerance for error, but is simple to execute. You only need to have physical contact with the target person within 30 minutes.”
Gu Linlang felt like spitting bl00d. The problem was that Qi Wanyang had already left. She was in so much pain she couldn’t even stand up. How was she supposed to chase after a luxury car?
“System, if I die, can I be reborn again?” Gu Linlang made a dying effort.
The system promptly issued a death sentence: “No. This is your only chance.”
“Then you should at least have some emergency solution, right? Like letting me teleport to Qi Wanyang’s side or something?” Gu Linlang didn’t give up.
The system coldly refused: “Host, teleportation is a superpower that must be redeemed in the Mall. You haven’t completed a single mission, so you are ineligible. Apologies.”
Gu Linlang’s heart sank completely. Despair engulfed her like a tide. She had finally gotten a second chance at life; was she really going to die so resentfully again?
Damn you, Qi Wanyang! Where are you? I command you to appear before me, right now!
Just then, a familiar voice rang in her ear: “Gu Linlang? Linlang, what’s wrong?”
Gu Linlang didn’t need to see the person to know who it was. And she had never found Qi Wanyang’s voice so sweet and pleasant.
Qi Wanyang helped her up, and strangely, the moment Qi Wanyang touched her, Gu Linlang felt the heart pain vanish instantly, and her breathing became completely clear.
“Ding—Congratulations to the Host for completing one instance of physical contact with Qi Wanyang. This physical contact was ‘Assistance/Support.’ Love Value +5.”
Gu Linlang was utterly confused. What the heck was “Love Value”? And it could be added and subtracted so casually?
However, since the life-threatening mission was complete, her momentary gratitude towards Qi Wanyang instantly disappeared. Just as she was about to push the other woman away, Qi Wanyang abruptly pulled her into an embrace.
“Ding! Congratulations to the Host for additionally completing one instance of physical contact with Qi Wanyang. This contact was ‘Embrace.’ Love Value +15.”
!!!
What was going on? Could she gain Love Value without a mission? And the scores were different?
“Yes, Host. Since you just went through rebirth, any physical contact with Qi Wanyang within 12 hours will add Love Value, regardless of whether it’s mission-related. Beginner’s welfare, are you happy?” The system’s voice sounded in Gu Linlang’s head.
“Happy my foot!” Gu Linlang rolled her eyes internally, desperately trying to escape the sudden restraint.
“Qi Wanyang, what are you doing? Let go of me!” she shouted, embarrassed and annoyed. Qi Wanyang looked at her suspiciously. She had just been clutching her chest, looking like she was about to faint. How was she so full of vigor and arrogance now?
“Are you sure you’re okay?” Qi Wanyang asked again, worried.
“I’m perfectly fine! Let go quickly! Same-s3x marriage is legal now, and you’re taking advantage of me again!” Gu Linlang struggled fiercely.
But Qi Wanyang didn’t let go. Instead, she lifted her up and carried her in her arms, shocking Gu Linlang into a yelp.
What the hell? When did Qi Wanyang get so strong? She’s carrying her steadily!
“Stop moving. Uncle Jian, to the hospital!” Qi Wanyang ignored her resistance and shoved her into the car. Fortunately, she had consistently maintained her fitness and done a lot of strength training over the past few years; carrying Gu Linlang was nothing to her.
!!!
She absolutely hated going to the hospital! Every time she went, she felt like half her life was gone.
Gu Linlang immediately reached for the car door, but Qi Wanyang had already told the driver to lock it.
“I’m really fine! I’m not going to the hospital! Qi Wanyang, did you hear me?!” Gu Linlang was so anxious that she grabbed Qi Wanyang’s arm, her fingers turning white from gripping. The system prompted an additional 5 Love Value, but she couldn’t care less about that now.
Qi Wanyang looked at Gu Linlang’s pale face, and her heart softened slightly. But the thought of her having two heart attacks within an hour immediately overwhelmed her pity. She hardened her heart, ignored Gu Linlang’s pleas, and made a phone call.
“Sis, are you still at the hospital? No, it’s not me; it’s Linlang. She’s had two heart attacks within an hour. She’s taken the medicine, but I’m worried. Yes, we’ll be there right away. Thanks.”
While on the phone, Qi Wanyang kept an eye on Gu Linlang. Gu Linlang was relentless, constantly muttering in her ear that she was fine and didn’t need to go through all the trouble of going to the hospital. Qi Wanyang simply pretended not to hear and continued arranging the logistics.
As soon as the call ended, Gu Linlang immediately crossed her arms and snorted coldly: “Qi Wanyang, you’re still so annoying and nosy. Who do you think you are to me, anyway?”
Qi Wanyang didn’t reply. She just sat quietly, her expression unreadable. This eerie silence made Gu Linlang nervous, giving her the feeling that a storm was about to break.
