Chapter 23: 023 “Because I Missed You. You Wouldn’t Even Look at Me…”
Gu Linlang changed clothes, specifically dressed up, and took the elevator down to the underground parking garage.
Just as she settled into the driver’s seat, her phone chimed.
She pulled out her phone and unlocked the screen. A message from Hong Hui popped up in the sisters’ group, followed by a noticeable @ tag.
“Linlang, Qi Wanyang isn’t going to the cemetery today. She just went home, and it looks like she’s going to meet Lu Yifei.” The message was followed by a “gossip” emoji.
Gu Linlang’s fingers paused, and her brow furrowed unconsciously. “Is the information reliable?”
Hong Hui instantly replied with a cool, sassy “You can trust me” sticker.
Hu Xinyi immediately followed with a “smirk” emoji: “Hehe, once you get your wife back, shouldn’t you give us a matchmaker’s red packet?”
Gu Linlang rolled her eyes in exasperation. When did these women become so obsessed with the Qi Wanyang x Gu Linlang ship? Matchmaker’s red packet?
She scoffed, her fingers quickly sliding across the screen. She directly transferred ten thousand yuan to each of them in the group.
“Just say you want a red packet. This Miss is giving you a tip.” She accompanied the transfer with a proud “This Empress is tired” sticker.
This small amount of money was her “intelligence fee,” and Miss Gu was always generous.
Hong Hui and the others were long used to Gu Linlang’s arrogant behavior. They happily accepted the red packets, and the group chat was instantly flooded with rows of goofy emojis like “Thank you, Boss” and “May the Empress be blessed.”
Gu Linlang tossed her phone onto the passenger seat. The engine of the red Maserati let out a low growl, and the car shot out of the Gu family gate like an arrow.
Qi Wanyang’s villa was located in Longcheng’s premium Huize District, a significant distance from the Gu family’s main residence.
Gu Linlang arrived just as a black Bentley was slowly pulling out of the gate.
Gu Linlang sped up her steps to meet it. Suddenly, the long-absent mechanical voice of the System rang out in her mind: “Ding, Host, please note! New Intimate Contact Mission issued: Please get Qi Wanyang to voluntarily embrace you within 30 minutes. Reward: 80 Love Value points!”
“Tsk, they only give this many points when it’s not a Challenge Mission?” Gu Linlang pouted. After wandering abroad for a bit, she was becoming obsessed with points.
Fortunately, this mission was relatively easy. It’s just getting Qi Wanyang to hug her, right? It’s not like she hadn’t been hugged before. But what kind of bad luck would this trigger?
She instinctively pressed her hand against her chest, finding her heart beating a little fast. Her gaze uncontrollably fixated on the figure in the back seat of the car whom she hadn’t seen in days.
“Ms. Qi, it’s Miss Gu.” Seeing Gu Linlang approach the car, the driver, Uncle Jian, quickly hit the brakes.
Qi Wanyang, sitting in the back, merely gave Gu Linlang a passing glance, then closed her eyes: “Ignore her, keep driving.”
Uncle Jian was slightly taken aback, but he didn’t dare ask more. Just as he was about to press the gas pedal, the ground suddenly began to shake violently.
Gu Linlang, standing in front of the car, wobbled, visibly about to lose her balance.
Seeing this, Uncle Jian quickly said to Qi Wanyang in the back: “Ms. Qi, please buckle up. It seems to be an earthquake.”
However, to Uncle Jian’s surprise, their Ms. Qi unbuckled her seatbelt in this situation, pushed the door open, and quickly walked toward Gu Linlang.
“Ah!” Gu Linlang was thrown off balance. Her high heels couldn’t maintain her footing on the violently shaking ground.
Just as she was about to fall, a slightly cool hand suddenly grabbed her wrist. She quickly grabbed the person’s arm to steady herself.
A familiar cool fragrance wafted towards her. Gu Linlang instinctively looked up, meeting Qi Wanyang’s deep eyes. Her heart suddenly skipped a beat. A smile involuntarily spread across her lips before she forcibly suppressed it.
Damn it! Why couldn’t she control her expression whenever she saw Qi Wanyang?
“Get in the car.” Qi Wanyang’s voice was calm and cold. She led Gu Linlang into the spacious back seat. She immediately fastened her own seatbelt and motioned for Gu Linlang to do the same.
Gu Linlang reluctantly buckled her seatbelt, the metal clasp making a crisp sound.
Great. Now that they were both securely fastened in their seats, how was she supposed to complete the Intimate Contact Mission?
She bit her lower lip, secretly worrying. Was she supposed to suddenly lunge over and make Qi Wanyang hug her? Just imagining the scene made her ears burn.
Also, was she imagining things? It felt like the distance between her and Qi Wanyang had suddenly increased after a week apart.
Gu Linlang glanced at the person next to her out of the corner of her eye. The woman hadn’t looked her in the eye since she got in, her lips were tightly pressed, and she was radiating a “do not approach” aura.
“Ms. Qi, this earthquake is unusual. What should we do now?” Uncle Jian gripped the steering wheel tightly, his voice laced with nervousness.
Qi Wanyang narrowed her eyes, her gaze sharp as a knife as she scanned the surroundings through the car window.
Gu Linlang’s eyes couldn’t help but fixate on Qi Wanyang again. She noticed that in just a few days, Qi Wanyang had lost weight, and the lines of her profile were sharper and more defined. When she spoke, her voice was calm and steady, without any trace of panic: “Drive forward. Find an open space to stop.”
Uncle Jian immediately shifted gears and smoothly drove the car to an open area ahead.
Once stopped, he immediately turned on the hazard lights, the orange glow blinking in the night.
Gu Linlang shook her head, trying to clear all the chaotic thoughts.
If she didn’t complete that damned Intimate Contact Mission soon, something seriously bad might happen.
She gritted her teeth, unbuckled her seatbelt, and lunged toward Qi Wanyang.
Since she couldn’t ask Qi Wanyang to hug her, she had no choice but to “throw herself into her arms.”
Unexpectedly, the ground shook violently. Instead of pushing her forward, it felt like an invisible hand was pulling her back.
With a loud thump, she slammed hard into the car door, a sharp pain shooting up her elbow.
“Buckle your seatbelt!” Qi Wanyang’s icy facade finally cracked, her voice strained.
“Qi Wanyang!” Gu Linlang struggled to reach out, but the darn earthquake seemed to be deliberately working against her. Every time she got close, a violent shake threw her back.
Seeing that the reckless girl was about to hit the car door again, Qi Wanyang abandoned all other concerns. She tore off her own seatbelt, stretched out her long arm, and scooped the person into her embrace, holding her tightly.
“Ding. Congratulations, Host, on completing this Intimate Contact Mission. You have been awarded 80 Love Value points.”
Gu Linlang sighed in relief internally. For the first time, she found the System’s emotionless mechanical voice quite pleasant.
“Qi Wanyang…”
“Gu Linlang, are you crazy?!” Qi Wanyang’s voice suddenly rose. She clamped down on Gu Linlang’s flailing wrist and chastised her. “You dare to unbuckle your seatbelt? It was the same on the plane last time! The plane was unstable, yet you were the only one running around the cabin. What are you thinking? Are you tired of living?”
Qi Wanyang rarely lost control of her emotions in recent years. Now, her chest rose and fell rapidly, and her shoulders were trembling. She truly couldn’t understand why Gu Linlang was always so oblivious to danger.
Gu Linlang shrank her neck at the shouting. A feeling of grievance bubbled up like carbonated water, causing her to blurt out: “Thinking what? Thinking about you, that’s what. You wouldn’t even look at me.” The moment the words left her mouth, she was startled by her own overly-saccharine tone. Her cheeks were so hot she could fry an egg. She quickly waved her hands: “I, I was just joking…”
This attempt at a clumsy cover-up instantly stunned Qi Wanyang. Her hand, which was gripping Gu Linlang’s wrist, froze.
