Chapter 4: 004 “Keep Up The Good Work, Sis Is Waiting To Drink Your Wedding Wine…”
“Oh, that’s because…” Xu Yiru was about to explain but was cut off by Qi Wanyang: “Sis, no need to explain too much to an ‘ungrateful wretch.'”
“Wait, who are you calling an ungrateful wretch?!” Gu Linlang immediately flared up at the insult.
“Alright, alright, Linlang, come on, we’re here. Let’s do the checkup. Don’t worry, it’s just a simple examination, and it’ll be over soon. The sooner we finish, the sooner we can leave the hospital, okay?” Xu Yiru knew Gu Linlang disliked visiting hospitals, so she coaxed her gently.
Gu Linlang suddenly realized that she’d been so preoccupied with arguing with Qi Wanyang that she’d forgotten she was in a hospital. The pungent, distinct smell of disinfectant instantly became an invisible chain, tightly restricting her breathing and causing a strong sense of discomfort.
Thinking that finishing the examination quickly meant leaving the hospital sooner, Gu Linlang suppressed all her discomfort, snorted, and ignored Qi Wanyang. Entering the examination room, Gu Linlang found a female doctor already waiting to conduct the tests.
Qi Wanyang stood outside the door and only let out a sigh of relief after watching Gu Linlang disappear into the room.
“Ah, my ears can finally get some peace and quiet,” Xu Yiru said dramatically, digging her right ear.
Qi Wanyang shot her a sidelong glance, a slight curve on her lips: “Isn’t bickering with her just an everyday thing for me?”
“And you’re proud of it? You’re a grown adult, bickering like a child. Aren’t you being childish?” Xu Yiru sighed helplessly, then her eyes lit up as if a thought struck her: “Wait… You didn’t do that on purpose, did you? That girl Linlang absolutely hates the smell of hospital disinfectant. Were you deliberately distracting her just now?”
Qi Wanyang gave her a “you tell me” look. Xu Yiru slapped her forehead, both annoyed and amused: “Fine. I was worrying over nothing. I shouldn’t have opened my mouth.”
Qi Wanyang sighed softly, her eyes full of worry: “Now I just hope her checkup goes smoothly and she’s okay.”
Xu Yiru watched her cousin’s devoted expression, her heart softening. She quickly changed the subject, nudging Qi Wanyang with her elbow: “Hey, I saw you. You were holding hands just now. Confess, what’s the situation between you two?”
Upon hearing this, a complex emotion flashed in Qi Wanyang’s eyes. She opened her mouth, seemingly wanting to say something, but hesitated. After a long moment, she finally spoke, a little helplessly: “There’s still no progress between us. But I just got back to the country. I’ll try to slowly close the distance between us.”
Xu Yiru looked at her and sighed softly, saying earnestly: “Wanyang, you really need to be mindful of how you speak. Even if you want to distract her, you could use a gentler approach. Like telling her a joke to cheer her up, or saying some heartwarming words to coax her. Girls like sweet talk, and coaxing is always better than arguing, don’t you know? Especially since the one you like is the Eldest Miss Gu, who is defiant, easily provoked, and yields only to tenderness. Can’t you just indulge her a little, be a little softer?”
Qi Wanyang listened to Xu Yiru’s advice but countered: “Are you sure that by simply obeying her, coaxing her, pampering her, and placing her on a pedestal, she will truly fall for you? In reality, there are plenty of people in Longcheng who obey, coax, pamper, and cherish her. Why hasn’t she fallen for any of them?”
Xu Yiru was about to say, “Well, she’s definitely closer to me than she is to you right now,” but the words caught in her throat. She swallowed them. Thinking carefully, her cousin had a point. The Gu family was the richest in Longcheng, and many people were eager to please Gu Linlang, but the Eldest Miss had very high standards and truly hadn’t shown interest in anyone.
Qi Wanyang took a deep breath, her voice firm: “I will make her genuinely like me. No one needs to worry about it.”
Xu Yiru knew her cousin’s stubborn nature. Once she set her mind to something, nothing could change it. But looking at it another way, while Gu Linlang might not like her cousin now, she certainly hated her the most.
Is being hated by the Eldest Miss a form of “success,” too?
Never mind. She should interfere less in the couple’s business.
The two were silent for a moment, then Qi Wanyang’s voice suddenly softened. She said quietly: “Sis, give this to her later. Just say someone asked you to deliver it as a birthday gift. Don’t mention me.”
Xu Yiru’s gaze fell on the exquisite small gift box in Qi Wanyang’s hand, a flicker of surprise in her eyes: “Oh, you even prepared a birthday gift? Our Wanyang is quite thoughtful. But you should give the gift yourself so she knows your feelings.”
Qi Wanyang shook her head, a trace of melancholy in her eyes: “Now’s not the time. If I give it to her, she’ll just reject it. I just want her to accept it. Whether she knows it’s from me is not important.”
Xu Yiru frowned, pondering for a moment: “This gift must be expensive. What should I say about who asked me to deliver it? How about I tell her it’s from a secret admirer? But if she keeps pressing for details, how do I cover it up? It’ll be awkward if she absolutely refuses to take it.”
Qi Wanyang thought for a moment, then whispered: “Don’t mention the secret admirer part, so she doesn’t feel burdened. If she refuses to take it, ask her to look at the gift first. Tell her the sender has no other meaning, they just genuinely want to make her happy.”
“Wow, you even prepared the dialogue. You’ve thought this through,” Xu Yiru teased, smiling. “Who was it just now who stubbornly said no one needed to worry?”
Qi Wanyang gave a helpless smile: “I was wrong just now. I spoke without thinking. Please don’t take it to heart, Sis. If you help me deliver the gift, I’ll personally guarantee your transfer to the company’s R&D department, which you mentioned wanting.”
Xu Yiru looked at Qi Wanyang’s serious demeanor, a rush of emotion welling up.
She took the gift box and patted Qi Wanyang’s shoulder: “Alright, CEO Qi, that’s a deal. These old bones of mine really can’t handle night shifts and surgeries anymore. Nine-to-five in R&D is perfect for me. You, keep up the good work. Sis is waiting to drink your wedding wine!”
Qi Wanyang smiled: “What if R&D is busier than the operating room?”
Xu Yiru had heard about the new drug development project Qi Wanyang was vigorously promoting after taking office. She chuckled and waved her hand: “With our CEO Qi covering for me, what do I have to fear?”
Qi Wanyang shook her head with a wry smile and didn’t reply.
Soon after, Gu Linlang finished all her examinations, her face paler than before.
Qi Wanyang couldn’t help but worry, and Xu Yiru noticed Gu Linlang was constantly covering her mouth and nose. She said thoughtfully: “Wanyang, why don’t you take Linlang to wait in the car? I’ll come find you after the reports are ready.”
Gu Linlang didn’t wait for Qi Wanyang to respond. She quickly waved goodbye to Xu Yiru and strode out of the examination room, heading straight for the elevator without looking back.
Qi Wanyang nodded to Xu Yiru, then quickly followed.
The two made the journey in silence, soon arriving at the Qi Corporation’s exclusive garage.
This VIP garage was located on a raised ground floor, about the size of a basketball court. Currently, only their car was parked there.
Although not extremely spacious, it was well-ventilated and had a skylight, making it a comfortable place for Gu Linlang and Qi Wanyang to wait.
Especially for Gu Linlang, she found it much better than the upper floors filled with the smell of disinfectant.
Uncle Jian, Qi Wanyang’s driver, had been waiting in the car for a while.
Seeing the two approach, he quickly got out to open the door.
But Gu Linlang didn’t rush to get in, instead turning to walk to the side.
Qi Wanyang gave Uncle Jian a meaningful look. Uncle Jian immediately understood, and after closing the car door, he skillfully moved a set of portable wooden table and chairs from the trunk. After setting them up, he respectfully said: “Eldest Miss Gu, please sit here.”
Gu Linlang figured she’d have to wait for the reports and was tired of standing, so she went over and sat down.
Uncle Jian not only prepared a seat but also personally brewed a pot of tea.
Gu Linlang took a sip. The tea’s fragrance was refreshing and sweet, instantly diluting the unpleasant hospital disinfectant smell.
“Uncle Jian, this tea is good. Is it Huangshan Maofeng?” Gu Linlang’s eyes lit up.
Uncle Jian bowed slightly, smiling and nodding: “Eldest Miss Gu has good taste. This is premium Anhui Huangshan Maofeng. Miss Qi usually loves this.”
Gu Linlang cupped the teapot, stealing a glance at Qi Wanyang, who was still on the phone. Suddenly, the tea felt a bit awkward to drink.
Qi Wanyang had just loudly called her an “ungrateful wretch,” and here she was, calmly drinking her high-quality tea. What kind of situation was this?
“Cough…” Gu Linlang cleared her throat uncomfortably, pushing the teacup away: “Um… Uncle Jian, just leave the tea for now. I’ll drink it later.”
Uncle Jian looked confused but respectfully replied: “Very well, Eldest Miss Gu.”
Qi Wanyang hung up the phone and walked over. Seeing Gu Linlang staring blankly at the teacup and Uncle Jian standing motionless nearby, she frowned: “Uncle Jian, is the tea not to your liking?”
Uncle Jian lowered his head awkwardly. Gu Linlang quickly waved her hand: “The tea is great. I was just thinking about something.”
Qi Wanyang nodded, signaled Uncle Jian to leave, and sat down opposite Gu Linlang, starting to brew tea again.
Gu Linlang knew the Qi family valued the art of tea. Qi Wanyang, having grown up immersed in it, naturally had impeccable tea-making skills.
She swiftly poured out the old tea leaves, took new ones from the caddy, and placed them in the zisha teapot, slowly pouring in hot water.
The tea leaves unfurled and tumbled in the pot, and the fragrance immediately wafted out.
Qi Wanyang’s fingers moved deftly among the tea set, every movement precise. The tea poured into the cup with a clear sound.
Gu Linlang suddenly felt that this moment was exceptionally quiet, as if time had frozen. The sight of Qi Wanyang making tea was like an immortal fairy stepping out of a painting.
“Pfft! Pfft! Pfft!” Gu Linlang violently shook her head, cursing herself inwardly: “Qi Wanyang just happens to be decent-looking. How can I compare her to a celestial being? I must be too tired today; I’m seeing things.” Yet, her eyes involuntarily kept glancing toward Qi Wanyang.
Qi Wanyang seemed oblivious to her strangeness. She gently pushed the finished tea toward her.
Gu Linlang deliberately put on a stern face and snorted, but still couldn’t resist picking up the cup and taking a sip. The fragrance instantly bloomed on her tongue; the sweet and mellow taste made her whole body relax.
“It’s alright,” Gu Linlang mumbled, pretending to compliment it carelessly.
Just as Qi Wanyang’s lips curled up, Gu Linlang immediately added the finishing blow: “I only mean the tea is good. It has nothing to do with you.”
“It seems I still have to work hard to gain Eldest Miss Gu’s approval,” Qi Wanyang replied with a light, knowing smile.
