Chapter 20: “Going to Be an Audience Member”
After Yán Xījìng finished reading, she put the book back where it belonged and curled up under Sī Sháo’s blanket. Before she knew it, she had fallen asleep.
When Sī Sháo finished her work, it was already a little past 3 p.m. Yán Xījìng had only been asleep for a little over an hour when Sī Sháo came in to wake her.
Still a bit groggy, Yán Xījìng instinctively wrapped her arms around Sī Sháo and kissed her. “I don’t want to get up~”
Sī Sháo chuckled. “Then how about I carry you to the sink so you can wash your face and wake up?”
“Mm,” she nodded.
The restroom in the lounge wasn’t big, so the two of them squeezed in together, though there was just enough space to move around. After washing their faces, they headed out.
Yán Xījìng rarely went shopping. The sun was blazing, so wearing a hat and sunglasses didn’t seem out of place. The two went to a mall.
Hand in hand, Yán Xījìng excitedly looked around and ended up buying quite a few things. Since most of her clothes were custom-made, she focused mainly on jewelry and accessories she could wear daily.
They didn’t get recognized while shopping, but once they sat down to eat, their disguises came off—after all, it’s hard to eat while wearing sunglasses—and people started to recognize her.
Originally, Yán Xījìng was curious what it would be like to eat normally in public. But fearing the crowd of fans might grow, she quickly pulled Sī Sháo away.
Back in the car, Yán Xījìng sighed in frustration. “Sigh, this is the worst part about being a celebrity—no freedom.”
Sī Sháo joked, “Then why not quit? Come work at my company. What do you think?”
She was teasing, knowing full well Yán Xījìng wouldn’t actually agree.
Yán Xījìng laughed. “What would I even do at your company? I don’t know anything. People would just say I’m there because of you.”
Sī Sháo smiled. “If I’m there, who dares to talk behind your back? You can just hang out all day. You don’t need to do anything.”
“You sound just like one of those foolish emperors corrupted by beauty,” Yán Xījìng teased and gave her a playful pinch on the cheek.
Sī Sháo pulled her close. “Well, what else am I? I am your beauty-dazed fool of an emperor.”
She leaned in to kiss her, but Yán Xījìng pushed her away with a laugh. “Enough with the flirting. Let’s go home. I’m hungry.”
“Alright.”
Sī Sháo drove them home, where dinner was already prepared. After eating, they went back to Sī Sháo’s room.
…
The next day, Sī Sháo went to work. Yán Xījìng got in the car too and started talking about an upcoming guest performance.
“Don’t you need to prepare?” Sī Sháo asked.
“It’s not a major show, so no need to overdo it. Want to come with me and hear me sing live?”
Yán Xījìng had a beautiful voice and had even released two albums in the past. But nowadays, singing was no longer her focus.
Of course, Sī Sháo wouldn’t say no to an invitation. “I’d love to. I won’t distract you?”
“Of course not. I’ll ask Brother Yang to arrange everything so you can come with me.”
“Great.”
Yang Xin hadn’t expected that Sī Sháo would be coming along too, but it wasn’t difficult to arrange a seat for her.
The show was recorded in the evening, just as Sī Sháo got off work, so they went to the venue together.
Once there, Sī Sháo accompanied Yán Xījìng backstage to get her makeup and wardrobe done.
Yang Xin was there too. Seeing Sī Sháo made him a bit nervous—she was a top-tier alpha. As an omega, just being able to speak calmly with her was already impressive.
“I didn’t expect President Sī to come along too.”
Sī Sháo replied warmly, “Thank you for taking care of Xiao Jing all these years.”
She knew everything about Yang Xin’s background. Although Yán Xījìng didn’t know who fathered Yang Xin’s child, Sī Sháo did. Yang Xin had only been able to live steadily because he worked as her agent.
“It’s no trouble. Xiao Jing is talented and kind—much better than those diva celebrities. I’m confident I can make her the biggest star of them all.”
Sī Sháo nodded. “If that’s what Xiao Jing wants, then go for it.”
“Of course.”
Yán Xījìng finished her makeup quickly—she had a naturally beautiful face that makeup artists loved.
Though Sī Sháo preferred her bare-faced, she still admired her dressed-up look. “My Xiao Jing is always stunning.”
Yán Xījìng accepted the compliment with grace. “Alright, go to the audience now. I’m about to go on.”
“You’ll be the best singer there,” Sī Sháo said sincerely.
She didn’t care how anyone else sang. In her eyes, Yán Xījìng was always the best.
Yang Xin led Sī Sháo to a VIP seat close to the judges.
Sī Sháo didn’t recognize the judges, but they knew who she was. Thanks to Yán Xījìng’s fame, Sī Sháo was recognizable even when she tried to stay low-key.
But Sī Sháo ignored the judges. She wasn’t there to socialize—she was there to listen to Yán Xījìng sing. Nothing else mattered. Every second of her time was valuable.
…
Yán Xījìng was the second performer. She was a guest vocalist for a new male omega singer from her company—just 19 years old.
The moment she appeared, Sī Sháo only had eyes for her. Though she only sang part of the song, Sī Sháo still thought it was perfect.
It wasn’t just Sī Sháo. The judges and audience all felt the same. The newcomer did fine, but he couldn’t compare to Yán Xījìng. She seemed born to be in the spotlight.
The performance ended quickly. The judges praised the newcomer, then lavished compliments on Yán Xījìng as well.
Yán Xījìng kept a professional smile, listening to their flattery while sneaking glances at Sī Sháo in the audience.
Finally, the gushing ended, and she hurried offstage to remove her makeup. Sī Sháo was brought backstage by Yang Xin.
…
“You sang beautifully just now.”
Even though Sī Sháo knew Yán Xījìng was confident, she still wanted to say it. She knew Yán Xījìng had always loved her praise.
Sure enough, Yán Xījìng grinned. “I knew you’d like it. See? It was worth bringing you.”
Sī Sháo asked seriously, “Xiao Jing, your voice is amazing. Have you thought about doing a concert?”
Yán Xījìng shook her head. “No way. Concerts are exhausting. I’d have to prepare for months. I’m not that into singing—just doing one or two songs occasionally is enough for me.”
