Chapter 29: The Onset of the Breakout Period
Yán Xījìng had to travel far, so she had to inform Sī Sháo.
Sī Sháo was in a good mood when she received Yán Xījìng’s call, but her face fell immediately upon hearing that Yán Xījìng would be gone for two days.
“Xiaojing, are you really leaving for two days?”
“Mhm, just to film a variety show and promote the new movie. I’ll be back in two days.”
Yán Xījìng had traveled for work before, and usually when she told Sī Sháo, Sī Sháo wouldn’t press her. She didn’t understand why Sī Sháo was suddenly so unhappy about it this time.
“I’ll come see you tonight.”
“Okay, whatever you want.”
Sī Sháo originally planned to wait until her emotions settled before seeing Yán Xījìng, but now that she was leaving, she felt uneasy and had to see her immediately.
That night, Sī Sháo went to pick her up right after work. Yán Xījìng had just finished up too. Seeing Sī Sháo, she instinctively wanted to avoid her, but it was pointless, so she got in the car.
As she drove, Sī Sháo asked, “Where are you going to film the show this time?”
“Not too far. Just a two-hour flight.”
“Why the sudden trip? Did I do something wrong lately?”
Sī Sháo’s instincts told her that this trip had something to do with her.
After a brief pause, Yán Xījìng replied, “It’s not sudden. I’ve gone on trips to film shows before, haven’t I? It’s just two days—I’ll be back soon.”
“I’ll help you pack later. Be safe out there.”
“Okay.”
That was all they said on the way back. Once home, Sī Sháo silently helped pack Yán Xījìng’s luggage. Although the trip was two days away, packing early made it easier to take her to the airport later.
After everything was packed, Sī Sháo gave a few reminders and left. She couldn’t control her emotions anymore, so it was better to distance herself for now.
In the past, whenever she got like this, it was always just before her susceptibility period. She had already prepared the suppressant, planning to use it, calm down, and coax Yán Xījìng afterward. In her current state, trying to comfort her would only backfire.
Yán Xījìng was so preoccupied with thoughts about whether she should continue the relationship that she didn’t even notice Sī Sháo’s abnormal condition. She figured she’d sort everything out after the trip and have a proper talk then.
Since they were filming the show together, Mò Níng had nothing to do and decided to visit Yán Xījìng’s set. Seeing how idle he was, Yán Xījìng had him make a cameo appearance. They used the downtime to chat.
Mò Níng was 28, a few years older than Yán Xījìng. He was well aware of her relationship with Sī Sháo.
“You still with that fiancée of yours?”
“Yeah, why wouldn’t I be? We’ve been engaged since we were eighteen. What about you? Still haven’t found the right person?”
“Nope. The right one’s hard to find. You’d be a great match, but someone beat me to it. So? Interested in ditching her and giving me a shot?”
He raised his brows playfully, like he was joking, though he was nervous deep down and didn’t want her to notice.
“…”
Normally, Yán Xījìng would’ve refused immediately. But now the words stalled on her lips. The others before may have been bad judgments, but she knew Mò Níng. He had a clean personal life, and their families even had some business dealings.
Mò Níng had braced for rejection. When she didn’t say no, hope flickered in him.
“No rush. Think about it. If you decide to leave Sī Sháo, let me be the first to know.”
Yán Xījìng neither agreed nor disagreed—she just smiled faintly. She didn’t know what she wanted right now, so she let it hang there.
Over the next two days before the trip, Yán Xījìng spent most of her time with Mò Níng. They grew close fast. Then, just before boarding her flight, she finally called Sī Sháo.
“I’m getting on the plane soon. I’ll be back in two days.”
Sī Sháo knew the trip was sometime within those days but didn’t know the exact time. Normally, she would’ve remembered to ask, but with how off she’d been lately, she simply forgot. Luckily, she’d already packed for Yán Xījìng.
“Be careful over there. I won’t see you off this time.”
Sī Sháo had been having her driver handle everything the past couple of days. She didn’t trust her current state and decided it was better not to go to the airport.
Yán Xījìng, who was with Mò Níng, was actually relieved Sī Sháo wasn’t coming.
“Alright then, take care at work. See you in two days.”
“Mhm.”
As soon as she hung up, Mò Níng, who had been nearby, commented,
“Sī Sháo’s so busy she won’t even come see you off?”
“She’s always busy, and it’s just a short trip. No big deal.”
“Well, if it were me, I’d never let my omega travel alone. No matter how busy I was, I’d make sure to see her off.”
Mò Níng’s words struck a nerve. Yán Xījìng suddenly realized that Sī Sháo had indeed been distant lately.
Could it be that, like her, Sī Sháo was also thinking about breaking up?
She shook the thought off. They’d talk it out when she got back. She shut off her phone before boarding.
On Sī Sháo’s end, she barely made it through the day. After returning home, she realized her susceptibility period was about to begin. She ate and took a suppressant injection, then arranged things at work and with her family. Hugging Yán Xījìng’s used pillow, she tried to sleep—without Yán Xījìng, time would pass more quickly.
Normal susceptibility periods were uncomfortable but didn’t cause fevers. Yet that night, Sī Sháo woke up burning up. She immediately knew something was wrong.
Barely holding on, she tried to call Yán Xījìng—only to hear her phone was off. With no other choice, she called her assistant, asking them to find a way to contact Yán Xījìng. Then she informed the housekeeper that her susceptibility period might be starting and that they should prepare accordingly.
It was serious. The housekeeper immediately informed Sī Sháo’s parents, urging them to return home as soon as possible.
