Chapter 49: Got the Marriage Certificate
“Dad, Mom, please don’t worry. This time, I’ll definitely be happy. I hope you both can give us your blessings.”
Si Shao said seriously.
Seeing her like this, Si Hengyu and Liang Rui realized that Si Shao had made up her mind. They had no choice but to nod in agreement.
The two families scheduled a dinner together for the following evening. In the past, they used to meet often, but ever since Si Shao’s accident, they hadn’t gathered. If it hadn’t been for the deep relationship between the families, Si Shao’s incident alone would have been enough to cause a serious fallout.
Originally, they thought there would be no chance of becoming in-laws again, but now both families were sitting together for a meal. All six of them felt a little awkward. Si Shao, however, played the part well, deliberately acting very considerate toward Yan Xijing to win everyone’s trust.
Yan Xijing hadn’t felt this kind of tenderness from Si Shao in a long time. As she looked at her, her eyes were full of love and contentment. The parents, seeing this, also felt more at ease.
Halfway through the meal, Yan Xijing said, “I’ve made up my mind. From now on, I’ll take on fewer acting roles—just one drama or film a year. I’ll spend the rest of the time at home taking care of Si Shao.”
Yan Xijing had never said anything like this even when they were close before. As soon as she said it, the parents were even more reassured. They knew her well—she was spoiled and willful, but she never said things she didn’t mean. She wouldn’t lie about something like this to please them.
Si Shao added, “We’ll balance work and life well. It won’t just be Xijing making sacrifices.”
Bai Hui immediately followed up, “We’ve always trusted you, Si Shao. It’s Xijing we’re worried about. After you two get married, don’t spoil her too much—she needs to grow up.”
“Auntie, after marriage, she’ll be my wife. If I don’t spoil her, who will? Don’t worry—I believe in her. We’ll be just fine.”
“That’s good to hear. Very good.”
Despite Bai Hui and Yan Yi doing their best to lighten the mood, Si Hengyu and Liang Rui still couldn’t be happy. They didn’t object to the marriage because they loved their daughter, not because they approved of Yan Xijing as a daughter-in-law. Even now, they still wished Si Shao could marry someone else.
Yan Xijing knew why Si Hengyu and Liang Rui were cold. But she had time—she could slowly win them over. Once she had a child, their hearts would surely soften.
After dinner, Si Shao and Yan Xijing saw the parents off, then drove to Si Shao’s villa. The two-story villa, which was closer to Si Shao’s company, had been chosen by Yan Xijing. Her work locations were more flexible, so she prioritized Si Shao’s convenience.
The villa was only a few minutes’ drive from the company, and less than a half-hour walk. It would save Si Shao a lot of time commuting.
“Take a look around and write down anything you need. I’ll have someone get it.”
Si Shao liked having everything planned in advance. She didn’t want to be caught off guard after marriage if something was missing.
Yan Xijing didn’t hold back. She toured the villa and actually made a list. This would be her home too. She wanted to slowly make it feel like one, but certain big items like fitness equipment needed to be prepared in advance.
That night, they stayed at the villa—but before bed, Si Shao unexpectedly asked Yan Xijing to sleep in the guest room.
“Why?” Yan Xijing asked, confused.
“From now on, we’ll sleep in separate rooms. There’s no one else here, so it won’t be awkward. Your room’s next to mine—if anything happens, I can come over quickly.”
Si Shao felt their relationship hadn’t reached the point where they could sleep together again. She had already made a mistake before, and she wanted to be extra cautious moving forward.
“I don’t agree,” Yan Xijing protested. “You’ve already completely marked me. What’s the point of separate rooms now? There’s no part of me you haven’t touched. Why are you doing this?”
“Because I don’t want to be reckless again. If you’re not pregnant, you’ll still have the option to leave.”
Hearing that made Yan Xijing doubt whether Si Shao really remembered everything. But no—it couldn’t be. If Si Shao truly remembered, whether she loved or hated her, she wouldn’t be looking at her with such cold eyes.
Yan Xijing gave a bitter smile. “Then let’s wait a month. If I’m pregnant, we’ll sleep in the same room. If I’m not, we’ll sleep separately.”
“Okay.”
If she was pregnant, there would be no way to separate. So in Si Shao’s mind, the proposal was reasonable.
Since neither family opposed the marriage, the wedding date was set for ten days later. Before the ceremony, the two of them went to get their marriage certificate.
It should’ve been a happy occasion, but Si Shao didn’t smile once on the way there. Yan Xijing wanted to lighten the mood but didn’t know what to say.
Just before they got out of the car, Yan Xijing asked, “Is marrying me really that unbearable? After all this time, have I really not done anything worth loving?”
“Do you think I should be happy? After being drugged by you, now I’m here marrying you. Should I be happy? You should’ve thought about all this before doing it. Why even ask now? Even if I’m not happy or willing, do I have a choice?”
It’s not that Si Shao hated Yan Xijing—otherwise, even drugged, she wouldn’t have fully marked her. But she felt stifled—trapped by Yan Xijing’s scheming, now forced to take responsibility through marriage. It all felt unfair.
Yan Xijing had no way to argue back. She had made her bed—now she had to lie in it.
During the photo session, Si Shao managed a perfect fake smile. Yan Xijing couldn’t even do that. It wasn’t until the photographer shouted “Smile!” that she reflexively put on a smile.
After taking the photos, they submitted their documents and received their marriage certificate. The process went smoothly.
Back in the car, Yan Xijing looked at the fresh certificate and sighed, “If only I’d married you earlier. At least then, I could’ve seen you smile.”
“Some things, once missed, are just missed. There’s no medicine for regret, and the past can’t be undone.”
“I know.”
Yan Xijing knew this marriage couldn’t be kept a secret, so she had Yang Xin notify the media and announce that she would be shifting her focus to home life. She wouldn’t be making any further personal statements about it.
