Chapter 7: Xiao Ran’s Guest Appearance
Three days later, Yan Xijing went to visit Zhao Zeyu again. Her condition had worsened since the last visit—this time, she was bedridden and receiving IV treatment.
“Sorry, sis, I can only talk to you lying down,” Zhao Zeyu said.
“No need to apologize. How are you doing? What did the doctor say?” Yan Xijing asked, struggling with sadness at the sight of such a young life slipping away.
Zhao Zeyu simply smiled and shook her head—her meaning was clear without words.
Since she didn’t have much energy, Yan Xijing didn’t stay long. Zhao Zeyu’s brother, Zhao Zelin, walked her out.
“Zhao Zelin, is there really no cure? What did the doctor actually say?” she asked.
“The doctor mentioned that there’s a research institute abroad that specializes in this type of heart disease. There might be hope if we send her overseas,” Zhao Zelin replied.
Although Zhao Zelin was making decent money as an actor, going abroad for treatment wasn’t easy. It wasn’t just about the money—it was also about arranging everything once they got there. If he went with her, he’d have to temporarily give up his job. In the entertainment industry, people are replaced quickly. If he left now and ran out of money, what then?
“I’ll see if I can help you get in touch. I can arrange the trip abroad, but you’ll have to cover all the expenses yourself,” Yan Xijing said.
She sympathized with Zhao Zeyu, but she had no intention of playing savior. There were many people deserving of sympathy—if she tried to save everyone, she wouldn’t survive herself. Besides, she’d need Si Shao’s help to make the arrangements.
“Thank you so much, Teacher Yan. I’ll definitely have the funds ready!”
Everyone in the entertainment circle knew about Yan Xijing’s background. When she offered help, Zhao Zelin was genuinely grateful.
After leaving the hospital and returning home, Yan Xijing called Si Shao.
“Miss me?” Si Shao teased, knowing full well that Yan Xijing only called when there was something important.
“Don’t mess around—I need your help.”
“What’s up?”
“A colleague’s sister is sick and needs treatment abroad. Can you help arrange it? Just so we’re clear—it’s purely a work colleague. Don’t get jealous for no reason.”
Yan Xijing didn’t think much of Zhao Zelin. He was too weak for her tastes—she could barely see him as anything other than a “sister.”
Si Shao chuckled, amused. “Our little princess has spoken. Of course I’ll handle everything.”
“You take care of the arrangements. I’ll have him reimburse you later.”
“Alright.”
Soon after the call, Si Shao got to work. Within three days, she had everything sorted. Two professional caregivers were arranged to accompany Zhao Zeyu abroad to ensure her safety during travel.
After Zhao Zeyu left, Zhao Zelin insisted on treating Yan Xijing and Si Shao to dinner to express his gratitude. The two couldn’t refuse and went along.
It was the first time Zhao Zelin met Si Shao privately. As expected of a top-tier alpha, even though he himself was an A-level alpha, he couldn’t help but feel nervous around her.
Si Shao could tell right away that someone like Zhao Zelin was nowhere near Yan Xijing’s type, so she didn’t bother acting territorial.
“Thank you both so much. If it weren’t for you, I don’t know what I would’ve done. I’ll drink this to show my gratitude—feel free to drink as much or as little as you like,” Zhao Zelin said, downing his drink in one go.
Si Shao followed with half a glass. Yan Xijing sipped a little orange juice. Everyone who had ever dined with her knew she didn’t like alcohol—and with her background, no one dared to pressure her.
After dinner, Zhao Zelin had had quite a bit to drink but didn’t seem drunk. Only after seeing him safely into his car did Si Shao and Yan Xijing leave.
Since Si Shao had been drinking, she couldn’t drive. Yan Xijing offered to take the wheel—something that rarely happened in their relationship.
She was a decent driver but just didn’t enjoy it.
As she drove, Si Shao sat in the passenger seat, staring at her without blinking.
“Why are you staring at me like that? Do I have flowers on my face?” Yan Xijing asked.
“Flowers could never be as pretty as you. But seriously, Xiaojing, you’re so kind—you need to be careful. Not everyone is as simple as they appear.”
“Alright, alright. I’m not a child. Don’t lecture me like some old man,” Yan Xijing retorted.
She knew that few people around her were genuinely simple. Maybe Zhao Zelin had approached her with ulterior motives from the beginning. But she didn’t want to overthink it. She also didn’t want Si Shao to point everything out. She preferred to believe that Zhao Zelin only reached out because his sister liked her.
“Okay, no lectures—my bad. Our Xiaojing is the prettiest and kindest little angel,” Si Shao said playfully.
Had she not been worried about distracting Yan Xijing while driving, she would’ve leaned in for a kiss.
Yan Xijing ignored her after that and focused on the road. Si Shao was clearly a little tipsy and babbling nonsense—better not to engage.
After dropping Si Shao off, Yan Xijing didn’t feel like driving home herself. She called her mother, Bai Hui, and decided to spend the night at Si Shao’s place. She had her own room there anyway—no real difference from home.
Si Shao was indeed a little drunk. Even though she knew Yan Xijing was in the house, she didn’t dare go over. She was afraid that she might do something impulsive and upset Yan Xijing.
The next morning, Si Shao woke up refreshed. After breakfast with Yan Xijing, she dropped her off at work.
Though Yan Xijing didn’t have many scenes that day, a film emperor was guest-starring, and his scenes were with her. As the junior actor, she had to arrive early.
The guest star was Xiao Ran, a top-tier alpha and a huge star in the entertainment industry. At only thirty-two, he had already won Best Actor and was one of the hottest names in showbiz. Many thought it was beneath him to guest star in a fantasy drama like this. But when fans heard he was appearing, they were thrilled—they couldn’t wait to see him in period costume.
Yan Xijing wasn’t fazed. So what if he was a top-tier alpha? Si Shao was one too. She kept things strictly professional with Xiao Ran while greeting and acting with him.
But Xiao Ran found her intriguing. He was well aware of how attractive top-tier alphas were to omegas and confident in his own charm. Yet this omega in front of him wasn’t moved in the slightest—which piqued his interest.
During a break, Xiao Ran approached her. “Teacher Yan, it’s a pleasure working with you. Would it be alright if we exchanged contact info?”
