- Chapter 10 - My Sister Patted My Head!
In the end, the head pat never happened.
By the time Ning Yunshu came out, Ye Qinglan had already returned to her room. Unable to bid goodnight, Ning Yunshu retreated to her own quarters with disappointment.
Listening to the sounds from next door, Ye Qinglan exhaled deeply while holding the script.
Damn it, ever since learning the truth, she’d become far too soft on Ning Yunshu!
Ye Qinglan shook her head vigorously and took a deep breath.
No, absolutely not. Seven years couldn’t be forgiven so easily.
Resolving herself, Ye Qinglan picked up the script again with renewed focus.
It was a story about a criminal investigation team’s battle of wits against criminals. The protagonist, Captain Song Yan, led her team in cracking a transnational human trafficking case.
The investigative team engaged in psychological warfare with the criminals, uncovering truths amidst intricate schemes.
The plot twists were so compelling that Ye Qinglan found herself completely absorbed.
When she finally looked up, it was already 1:00 AM.
Rubbing her tired eyes, she set aside the script and went to bed.
She woke the next day at noon. Emerging from her bedroom, she was surprised to find Ning Yunshu still at home, cleaning.
“Did I wake you, sister?” Ning Yunshu asked with concern upon seeing her.
“No. Why aren’t you at work today?” Ye Qinglan eyed her curiously.
Ning Yunshu smiled wryly. “Sister, it’s the weekend.”
Ye Qinglan raised an eyebrow. “Even big bosses get days off?”
“Big bosses are human too,” Ning Yunshu sighed. “Besides, I haven’t taken a single day off in years. It’s time I learned to give myself breaks.”
Remembering Ning Yunshu’s past lifestyle, Ye Qinglan nodded in agreement. Watching her wipe down furniture, she remarked, “You could have called the housekeeper.”
“It’s fine. I’ve got nothing else to do, and since I’m living here, I should contribute,” Ning Yunshu replied cheerfully.
“You’re already handling all the meals,” Ye Qinglan muttered.
Ning Yunshu chuckled. “It’s really no trouble. You must be hungry go do your thing while I prepare lunch.”
Without waiting for objections, Ning Yunshu finished cleaning, washed her hands, and disappeared into the kitchen.
Seeing her determination, Ye Qinglan returned to her room to continue reading the unfinished script from last night.
She only emerged when Ning Yunshu knocked to announce lunch.
The afternoon passed uneventfully. While Ye Qinglan practiced yoga in the living room, Ning Yunshu discreetly retreated to her room, occasionally taking work calls that Ye Qinglan didn’t pay much attention to.
After completing her yoga routine, Ye Qinglan resumed studying the script until Ke Ying called.
“Ke Jie, what’s up?” Ye Qinglan answered, curled on the sofa with the script in hand.
“Qinglan, the production schedule’s confirmed. You’ll start filming in six weeks, but Director Xu wants you and the other investigative team actors to undergo a month of police training beforehand. You’ll have a few days’ break after that before official shooting begins.”
Hearing about the training camp, Ye Qinglan was initially surprised but quickly understood.
They were just actors, not professional detectives. Director Xu was clearly aiming for awards with this film, not just making something casually. To achieve authenticity and professionalism, it made sense for them to undergo proper training.
Ye Qinglan had no objections at all and simply asked, “When does the training start?”
“The day after tomorrow. Pack your things properly. Director Xu is pushing for progress, so this will be a closed training camp. You’ll have to stay in the dormitory there for the whole month,” Ke Ying reminded her. “You’ll probably be rooming with other actors, but don’t worry, Director Xu will arrange everything. Just take this chance to build good relationships with the senior actors.”
“I understand,” Ye Qinglan replied.
“Good. By the way, have you eaten yet?” Ke Ying asked again. “And don’t you dare just grab a quick bite.”
Ye Qinglan pinched the bridge of her nose and said, “Relax, Sister Ke. Ning Yunshu is cooking.”
Ke Ying froze. “Who’s cooking?”
She had assumed Ning Yunshu had just hired someone to cook for Ye Qinglan to make sure she didn’t skip meals.
Good grief, since when did Ning Yunshu cook for her?!
But Ye Qinglan replied innocently, “She said she’s paying rent with three meals a day.”
Ke Ying wasn’t buying it. Ning Yunshu’s intentions were as obvious as Sima Zhao’s ambition everyone could see through them except Ye Qinglan, who was pretending to be clueless.
Gritting her teeth, Ke Ying said, “I hope it’s really just rent.”
Ye Qinglan stayed silent, feeling a little guilty.
Just then, her bedroom door was knocked, and Ning Yunshu’s voice called from outside, “Sister, dinner’s ready. Time to eat.”
Ye Qinglan quickly said to Ke Ying, “Alright, Sister Ke, I’m going to eat now. Just have Tiantian take me to the training camp the day after tomorrow. Bye.”
With that, she hung up.
Leaving Ke Ying staring at her phone in disbelief.
She actually dared to hang up on her?!
Meanwhile, Ye Qinglan washed her hands and sat at the dining table. Watching Ning Yunshu’s cheerful demeanor, she hesitated before speaking up, she had to tell her about leaving for a month.
“Ning Yunshu, there’s something I need to tell you.”
Hearing her name, Ning Yunshu immediately looked up at Ye Qinglan. “What is it, sister? Tell me.”
Seeing her like this, Ye Qinglan felt a pang of reluctance but still said, “My new movie is in preparation. Starting the day after tomorrow, I’ll be attending a training camp and won’t be back for a month.”
Sure enough, the moment she finished speaking, Ning Yunshu visibly wilted, even her nonexistent tail seemed to stop wagging.
“I understand,” Ning Yunshu said softly. “I’ll take good care of the house.”
This was hardly the domineering, famous CEO Alpha! She looked more like a big, abandoned puppy!
Ye Qinglan felt even worse and quickly added, “It’s just a month of training, not like I’m disappearing.”
At that, Ning Yunshu’s head snapped up, her eyes bright. “Then, can I message you when you’re free?”
Her gaze was so direct and eager that Ye Qinglan instinctively looked away. “Do what you want, but I can’t promise I’ll reply.”
Ning Yunshu wasn’t discouraged at all instead, she beamed radiantly.
“Okay! It’s fine, sister. Just focus on your work.”
Now, Ye Qinglan was at a loss for words.
Ning Yunshu’s ability to bloom with the slightest sunshine had improved yet again.
Since training camp preparations were underway, Ye Qinglan packed her luggage the very next day. However, she couldn’t help but notice Ning Yunshu constantly hovering around her, which eventually made her snap.
“Ning Yunshu, what are you doing? Pacing back and forth in the living room like this.”
Ning Yunshu rubbed her nose sheepishly before replying softly, ” I just wanted to see if there’s anything I could help with.”
Ye Qinglan gave her an exasperated look. “You helping would mean not hovering around like this.”
“Oh!” Ning Yunshu responded dejectedly.
Seeing this, Ye Qinglan let out a long sigh and beckoned her over. Puzzled, Ning Yunshu approached, only to have Ye Qinglan pat her head and say, “Be good and go play by yourself.”
It was as if she were coaxing a pet, yet Ning Yunshu instantly perked up, grinning foolishly. “Then, then I’ll go back to my room. Call me if you need anything, sis.”
With that, she floated dreamily back to her room.
Ye Qinglan couldn’t help but sigh again.
How could someone so silly have endured those seven years?
Amused, she continued packing.
Meanwhile, Ning Yunshu threw herself onto her bed the moment she returned to her room, clutching a pillow and silently screaming into it.
Her sister had patted her head!!!
This was undoubtedly the greatest progress she’d made in all these days of effort.
(Though Ye Qinglan would argue it was more of a pat than a caress.)
Ning Yunshu wriggled on the bed like a twisty pretzel before grabbing her phone and posting in a group chat titled [The Loving (and Annoying) Family].
[Ning Yunshu]: AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
[Yun Xi]: ?
[Ning Jason]: ?
[Ning Yunshu]: AHHHHHHHHHHHHH!
[Yun Xi]: Ning Yunshu, what are you barking about? You’re hurting my eyes.
[Ning Jason]: Sweetheart, what’s wrong? Did something happen?
[Ning Yunshu]: Sis patted my head!!!
[Yun Xi]: …
[Ning Jason]: …
[Ning Yunshu]: Hehehe…
[Yun Xi]: @Ning Jason, did the hospital switch our baby at birth?
[Ning Jason]: Don’t worry, dear. I was watching, definitely no switch.
[Yun Xi]: I almost wish there had been. I’ve never seen an Alpha like this.
Ning Yunshu paid no mind to her parents’ teasing. Just the thought of Ye Qinglan patting her head today filled her with joy.
If she weren’t afraid of Ye Qinglan finding her disgusting, she might have considered not washing her hair for a while.
Of course, her current elation only made her misery the next day all the more pitiful when Zhou Tiantian came to pick Ye Qinglan up.
The longing, woeful look in her eyes sent shivers down Zhou Tiantian’s spine.
She’d only met Ning Yunshu a few times before, and in her memory, Ning Yunshu had always carried herself with the composed ease of a top-tier entrepreneur. Who was this abandoned puppy lookalike?!
Ye Qinglan also had a headache. She shot Ning Yunshu a glare, signaling her to tone it down, and the pitiful expression finally disappeared.
“That’s everything, Tiantian. Take these down to the car first. I’ll be down soon,” Ye Qinglan said.
Zhou Tiantian felt as if she’d been granted a reprieve. Another moment under Ning Yunshu’s gaze would have given her goosebumps. She quickly grabbed the luggage and replied, “Got it, Ye-jie. I’ll wait for you in the car.”
With that, she hurried into the elevator and left.
After Zhou Tiantian was gone, Ye Qinglan sighed and looked at Ning Yunshu. “Ning Yunshu.”
“Here!” Ning Yunshu responded immediately.
“Take care of things at home while I’m away, and message me if anything comes up,” Ye Qinglan said.
Hearing this, Ning Yunshu finally broke into a happy smile.
“Got it! Do your best at training, sis!”
Ye Qinglan’s lips twitched.
Seriously, what’s there to “do your best” about in some training camp?
