- Chapter 4 - Please, don't hate me.
Sitting in Ye Qinglan’s car, Ning Yunshu tried her best to minimize her presence.
The reason was simple, Ye Qinglan’s expression was so dark that Ning Yunshu didn’t dare utter another word, certain she’d be kicked out of the car if she did.
The two of them barely exchanged a word the entire ride. When they arrived home, Ning Yunshu obediently followed behind Ye Qinglan. After opening the door and letting her in, Ye Qinglan finally deigned to speak.
“You’ll take the guest room. And remember, no staying in my room at night, no bringing up childhood memories, and absolutely no entering my study.” Ye Qinglan’s gaze was icy, her tone leaving no room for negotiation.
“Okay,” Ning Yunshu replied meekly.
Seeing her like this, Ye Qinglan unconsciously pressed her lips together before adding, “I’ll register your fingerprint, but don’t think you’ll be staying here permanently. I don’t want any rumors spreading.”
“I understand.” Ning Yunshu’s eyes had brightened at the mention of fingerprint registration, but they dimmed just as quickly at the following words.
Looking at her like this, there wasn’t a trace of an Alpha’s dominance.
The thought made Ye Qinglan ask reflexively, “Ning Yunshu, are you really an Alpha?”
Ning Yunshu blinked, then tilted her head to sweep aside the hair at the nape of her neck, revealing her scent gland to Ye Qinglan. “Yes, I’m not lying.”
A faint aroma of milk candy drifted out, an unthreatening scent, yet it made Ye Qinglan’s legs weaken slightly, her own gland tingling with a dull ache.
Ye Qinglan hastily took a step back. “Alright, alright, I get it. Make sure you have your own suppressants. I don’t keep Alpha suppressants here.”
At this, Ning Yunshu’s face lit up with a smile Ye Qinglan knew all too well. “I know. I won’t cause you any trouble.”
That smile sent a pang through Ye Qinglan’s chest. There was a time when Ning Yunshu would wear that same expression, sweetly calling her “big sister.”
The memory made Ye Qinglan quickly suppress the faint stirring in her heart, maintaining her cold demeanor. “Fine. Let’s register your fingerprint.”
Once Ning Yunshu’s fingerprint was recorded, Ye Qinglan retreated to her bedroom, while Ning Yunshu contacted her assistant to have her luggage delivered.
In the meantime, she wandered into the kitchen. Finding only milk and bread in the fridge, she called her assistant again to pick up some groceries.
When Ning Yunshu’s assistant, Qin Yun, arrived with her luggage, she couldn’t hide her surprise. “Gracia, you’re staying here?”
The neighborhood Ye Qinglan lived in wasn’t exactly high-end, and after living in sprawling villas in Australia, it was baffling that Ning Yunshu would choose to stay here and as a roommate, no less.
But Ning Yunshu only smiled, content and gentle. “It’s perfect here.”
Qin Yun didn’t understand, but since her boss seemed satisfied, she didn’t press further. She simply carried in two suitcases and a bag of groceries before asking, “Should I help you unpack?”
“No need. You can head back,” Ning Yunshu declined with a shake of her head.
Qin Yun didn’t linger, nodding before taking her leave.
After seeing her out, Ning Yunshu first stored the groceries in the fridge, then returned to her room to unpack.
The bedroom was simply furnished, a bed, a small desk, and a wardrobe but arranged very cozily. Ning Yunshu couldn’t resist lying down and burying her face in the pillow. Only now did the delayed excitement hit her as she realized she would be living with Ye Qinglan.
Today’s conversation showed that Ye Qinglan didn’t truly hate her completely, but was resentful and angry over her seven years of silence. There was still hope.
It didn’t matter if Ye Qinglan wasn’t ready to hear her explanations now. She would prove herself and wait until Ye Qinglan was willing to give her that chance.
At this thought, Ning Yunshu suddenly felt energized as if injected with adrenaline and began packing her luggage.
She didn’t have much just a few sets of clothes and daily office supplies and soon finished organizing everything. Checking the time, she got up and left the bedroom.
Ye Qinglan remained in her own room, quiet as if asleep or occupied with something. Ning Yunshu moved softly into the kitchen to start preparing.
In truth, Ye Qinglan had been sitting in the armchair since returning to her room, spacing out.
Bringing Ning Yunshu home was something she would never have considered before yesterday. But her mother had insisted half-threatening leaving her no choice.
She had originally planned to avoid any private interactions with Ning Yunshu unless absolutely work-related.
Now, with Ning Yunshu living under the same roof, avoiding her would be nearly impossible.
What troubled Ye Qinglan even more was how she would explain this to Ke Ying.
She had just won Best Actress, and now Ning Yunshu, the chairman of J.S., was moving into her home.
Ha. She could already imagine the flood of negative press if paparazzi caught wind of this.
The thought of these complications made her scalp tingle. She shouldn’t have agreed so hastily.
But recalling Lin Xuesong’s words, she realized her mother might truly kick her out of the house if she refused.
Ye Qinglan pinched the bridge of her nose, then, as if surrendering, opened Ke Ying’s contact and sent a message.
[Ye Qinglan: Ke-jie, I need to report something to you.]
[Ke Ying: ?]
[Ye Qinglan: My mom had the daughter of a friend stay at my place temporarily.]
[Ke Ying: ??]
[Ye Qinglan: That person is Ning Yunshu.]
[Ke Ying: ???]
[Ke Ying: !!!]
The cold, questioning robot finally stopped with the question marks and instead hurled three exclamation points at her.
Then her phone rang. Startled, Ye Qinglan quickly answered and whispered, “Ke-jie, I know you’re anxious, but don’t panic yet. She’s already here.”
Ke Ying took a deep breath on the other end before asking, “What’s going on? I mean, what exactly is your relationship with Chairman Ning?”
Ye Qinglan paused before replying, “Nothing much. Our families used to be neighbors. We grew up together.”
“And then?” Ke Ying pressed.
Playing dumb, Ye Qinglan asked, “What do you mean ‘then’?”
Ke Ying scoffed. “You’d better explain properly. Everyone saw you two that day. If something happens later and you haven’t clarified, how am I supposed to handle the PR?”
After a moment of silence, Ye Qinglan murmured softly, “There’s nothing else. It’s all in the past. It doesn’t matter anymore.”
Hearing her say this, Ke Ying also felt a headache coming on. “You think it’s all in the past, but what about that CEO Ning?”
“I’ll make things clear with her,” Ye Qinglan replied calmly.
“Ah.” In the end, Ke Ying could only sigh. “Fine, you really know how to make trouble for me.”
Ye Qinglan smiled faintly. “Thanks for your hard work, Sister Ke.”
“Not hard work, just bad luck. Alright, I’ve got things to do. Talk later.”
“Bye, Sister Ke.”
After hanging up, Ye Qinglan sank into the couch and let out a long breath. The dull headache crept back, so she changed clothes and decided to take another nap.
When she woke up, the room was dim, the headache had faded, and she felt somewhat better.
She wanted to lounge a little longer, but since she hadn’t eaten much at noon due to Ning Yunshu’s situation, her stomach began to growl.
Reluctantly, she got up, planning to grab some bread and milk to tide her over.
But as soon as she stepped out, the faint aroma of food drifted toward her. Turning her head, she saw Ning Yunshu carrying dishes from the kitchen.
Spotting her, Ning Yunshu smiled. “You’re awake. I bought some groceries and made dinner. Would you like some? I noticed you barely ate at noon, and the fridge only had milk and bread, so…”
Ye Qinglan pressed her lips together. “Ning Yunshu, don’t take matters into your own hands.”
At that, Ning Yunshu’s smile faltered. She lowered her head. “I’m sorry, Jiejie!”
Her dejected expression made Ye Qinglan uncomfortable.
Clenching her fists, Ye Qinglan finally relented. “Fine, since you’ve already made it.”
Hearing this, Ning Yunshu perked up. “Then, then sit down! I’ll serve you rice!”
She hurriedly set the dishes down and rushed back into the kitchen, leaving Ye Qinglan momentarily unsure who was the actual host here.
Once they were seated at the table, Ning Yunshu watched her eagerly. Under that gaze, Ye Qinglan had no choice but to try a bite.
“Not bad,” she remarked.
Ning Yunshu’s cooking was actually excellent, but Ye Qinglan refused to admit it outright.
Ning Yunshu beamed. “As long as Jiejie likes it.”
Her words made Ye Qinglan frown. She looked up at Ning Yunshu. “Ning Yunshu, even though I’ve let you stay here, there are things we need to clarify.”
“What’s past is past. I don’t want to dwell on it anymore. Since you’re back, out of respect for my parents, I can tolerate you staying here temporarily. But from now on, we’re just acquaintances landlord and tenant.”
Her tone was calm, but Ning Yunshu’s eyes reddened, tears welling up as if she might shatter at any moment.
Ye Qinglan couldn’t bear it and instinctively looked away.
“It’s okay!” Ning Yunshu whispered, her voice fragile like porcelain on the verge of breaking.
Against her will, Ye Qinglan glanced back only to see Ning Yunshu forcing a smile despite the tears streaming down her face. ” I understand.”
“I won’t make things difficult for Jiejie, Jiejie can do whatever you want. But, Jiejie.”
“Please, don’t hate me.”
The plea that was utterly humbled to the core finally made Ye Qinglan soften a little despite herself.
She closed her eyes, took a deep breath, and said,
“Fine, I can agree to your request.”
Ning Yunshu forced a smile that looked even more pitiful than tears.
“Thank you!”
