- Chapter 12 - No One Believes the Truth
With the live stream chat buzzing, An Ruoshui and Luo An had already set off with the male and female contestants.
For An Ruoshui, earning money for ingredients the “celebrity way” was easy. The difficult part was having to personally cook later. Wouldn’t that be the end of her?
The first time she entered the kitchen, the rice cooker exploded. The second time, the microwave exploded. The third time, she hadn’t even turned on the stove when her older brother cried and dragged her out.
On the street, An Ruoshui maintained her public image of being cool, aloof, and unapproachable, like a high mountain flower. However, Luo Xuange, following behind her, noticed her nervously clenching her fists from time to time, like a child who had made a mistake and was being dragged by their teacher to see their parents. Quite adorable.
“Xuange? What are you smiling about?” Meng Xiaomeng asked curiously.
Luo Xuange suppressed her smile as she averted her gaze: “Just thought of a dry joke.”
“Oh.” Meng Xiaomeng was clearly uninterested in dry jokes. She quietly leaned closer to Luo Xuange’s ear: “Xuange, are you a fan of Movie Queen An?”
“Ah?” Luo Xuange thought for a moment. The original owner should be An Ruoshui’s fan. So, she nodded.
Meng Xiaomeng was like a homeless child who had wandered for years and suddenly found an organization. She tightly hugged Luo Xuange’s arm: “Ah~ Xuange, I’m a fan of Movie Queen An too! Let me tell you, I’ve watched every single one of Movie Queen An’s films, I’ve followed every single drama she’s starred in, and I’ve collected all the albums she’s released!”
The little fan’s eyes glowed green: “I’m about to witness the goddess cook with my own eyes. So happy!”
“…” Sect Leader Luo was a little annoyed. Her “little follower” was constantly thinking about her own wife. What kind of situation was this? Also, she didn’t know whether or not to tell Meng Xiaomeng that the greater the expectation, the greater the disappointment after learning the truth.
Even with the male and female contestants divided into separate teams, An Ruoshui’s team still had over forty people. To avoid unnecessary trouble, the production team decided to leave four people with An Ruoshui. The remaining contestants could return to the lounge and watch An Ruoshui’s activities via live stream.
Choosing which four people became a topic of debate. Ultimately, they decided to draw lots to determine the four lucky individuals.
The chosen ones were: Number 17 Meng Xiaomeng, Number 21 Luo Xuange, Number 45 Bai Liu, and Number 20 Jiang Yihan.
Meng Xiaomeng heard Mu Ling announce the list and gasped, looking at Luo Xuange: “They’re all from our dorm!”
“Mm.” Luo Xuange was indifferent. She had been begging not to be chosen because she didn’t want too much contact with An Ruoshui, but fate always seemed to play tricks on her.
An Ruoshui felt a slight relief when she heard Luo Xuange’s name on the announced list. This way, Luo Xuange would get more screen time, increasing her exposure and the number of people who knew her, which would lead to more votes for Luo Xuange.
An Ruoshui walked up to the four. Bai Liu, though still aloof, no longer kept her distance from An Ruoshui and greeted her naturally.
It was Meng Xiaomeng’s first time being this close to her goddess. She was so nervous that she clutched Luo Xuange’s arm tightly.
Luo Xuange endured the pain in her arm, introducing herself to An Ruoshui while forcing out a strange smile.
An Ruoshui gave Meng Xiaomeng a subtle glance, which startled Meng Xiaomeng into completely letting go of Luo Xuange’s arm. Realizing what had happened a moment later, she patted her racing heart: What did I do wrong? I didn’t do anything wrong, did I? So why am I scared? Wuwuwu… Maybe the goddess is just too cold. This is my reverence for the goddess, I’m not scared. Not scared!
Jiang Yihan stepped forward and shook An Ruoshui’s hand, introducing herself enthusiastically. Compared to Bai Liu’s coldness, Luo Xuange’s indifference, and Meng Xiaomeng’s strangeness, Jiang Yihan was arguably the only normal one among the four.
After shaking hands with An Ruoshui, Jiang Yihan considered hugging her but then suppressed the thought. After all, An Ruoshui was famously unapproachable. If her request for a hug was rejected, she might just become a laughingstock in the public eye.
An Ruoshui briefly got to know them, then began leading them to complete the task assigned by the production team.
An Ruoshui had originally planned to perform street art, such as singing or dancing. With her popularity, she wouldn’t lack fans or moviegoers to support her. But considering that Luo Xuange and the others would also need to use the same method to earn money, she abandoned that idea. After all, Luo Xuange was still a new face, and she didn’t know what else Luo Xuange could do besides playing the hand ocarina. If the street performance wasn’t successful, Luo Xuange might attract negative attention.
An Ruoshui thought it would be great if she could ask Luo Xuange in advance what other talents she had besides playing the hand ocarina. That way, she could help Luo Xuange better.
Just then, Luo Xuange greeted the filming crew, saying she needed to go to the restroom.
An Ruoshui had an idea and also greeted the crew before leaving.
Luo Xuange had just stepped into the restroom when An Ruoshui followed right behind her. Luo Xuange looked at An Ruoshui, who was gripping her wrist, with a confused expression.
“What do you want?” Luo Xuange asked bluntly. In Sect Leader Luo’s impression, An Ruoshui was a woman even more temperamental and inexplicable than the Right Protector.
An Ruoshui thought for a moment, released her hand, and urged Luo Xuange: “You take care of your private matters first, then we can talk.”
“Oh.” Luo Xuange maintained her usual deadpan expression.
When Luo Xuange finished her private matters, An Ruoshui watched her wash her hands and asked: “What else can you do besides play the hand ocarina?”
“…” Sect Leader Luo suddenly stopped all movement and quietly met An Ruoshui’s gaze.
After a long moment, Luo Xuange sighed: “Forget it. Even if I tell you, you won’t believe me.”
“…?” An Ruoshui looked at her curiously: “What other talents do you have?”
“You really want to know?” Luo Xuange asked uncertainly. Seeing An Ruoshui nod, Luo Xuange continued: “Then if I tell you, will you believe it?”
“Tell me, I’ll believe you.” An Ruoshui didn’t think Luo Xuange was someone who would lie.
A rare hint of joy flickered in Luo Xuange’s eyes: “I can scale walls and rooftops, and I know eighteen kinds of martial arts. I can also play zither, chess, calligraphy, painting, dance, and sing. I can ride horses and shoot arrows, compose poems and couplets…”
“Sorry, I take back what I just said.” An Ruoshui dropped her elegance, gave Luo Xuange an eye-roll, then said to Luo Xuange: “I’m planning to borrow some money, buy some fruit, and sell it with autographs. I’ve watched some reality shows, and many celebrities use this method. It’s very effective. What do you think?”
“Oh, it’s alright.” Luo Xuange’s tone and expression were once again infuriating, making An Ruoshui wish she could kick her onto a wall and not be able to peel her off.
Having more or less reached an agreement with Luo Xuange, An Ruoshui left the restroom in a pleasant mood.
Luo Xuange, however, was bewildered. She had thought An Ruoshui also came to relieve herself, but it turned out An Ruoshui just came to say a few words to her. What was wrong with this woman lately?
