- Chapter 13 - The Messenger From the Royal Capital
The Messenger from the Royal Capital
Every day, I learn about managing the estate from my steward while training hard with my sword.
I’ve improved my sword skills, but Vio has made astonishing progress. It seems she had a natural talent, and her skills have advanced rapidly.
About a month later, a messenger from the royal capital arrived. They informed me that if I want to officially become a Marquess, I must present myself at the royal palace.
This was expected. Although I’m currently the head of the Balbastor family, I’m not yet an official Marquess.
“Well, I need to go to the capital.”
I asked my steward to pack and hurried to Vio’s room. I wanted her to come with me.
“Is Vio here?”
“Master, Miss Violette is in Mrs. Corantine’s room,” the maid in Vio’s room answered.
I felt a bit sorry to disturb their mother-daughter time, but I decided to visit Mrs. Corantine.
I quickly changed my mind and asked the maid for an audience with Mrs. Corantine. Permission was granted, and I entered the room.
In the main building of the Balbastor’s mansion, Mrs. Corantine’s room is facing the sun, and soft sunlight bathed the feminine furniture, and a floral scent mixed with the aroma of tea filled the air. It made me think of my mother.
“Pardon the intrusion. I have something to discuss. This is Clovis,” I announced.
“Clovis, no need to be so formal. Come, have a seat,” Mrs. Corantine replied.
“Excuse me,” I said and sat at the table with Mrs. Corantine and Vio.
“We were just practicing for a tea party. Would you like to join us, Clovis?”
“I will, after we finish our discussion,” I replied.
Count Univille’s support seems genuine. Even after my parents’ funeral, Mrs. Corantine has stayed at the Babastor mansion, helping manage things I can’t handle yet. She’s been incredibly supportive, acting on behalf of Countess Univille.
“That’s right. So, did you want to speak to me? Or to Vio?”
“Both of you. A messenger from the royal palace just arrived, requesting our presence.”
“Oh my! Congratulations, Clovis!”
“Congratulations, Clovis!”
“Thank you both. Actually, I plan to take Vio with me to the capital. Mrs. Corantine, do you agree?”
“The capital!”
“Taking Vio? Well…”
Vio’s eyes sparkled at the prospect, while Mrs. Corantine paused to think.
“May I join you?”
“Would you, Mrs. Corantine? That would be wonderful.”
I barely remember the capital from my childhood visit, so having Mrs. Corantine, who knows it well, would be reassuring.
“We can learn about socializing in the capital through real-life experience,” Mrs. Corantine said, touching her cheek thoughtfully. As expected, she was respected and even feared by nobles as an education-focused mother.
“Let’s start training right away. Vio, Clovis, I’ll turn you into a perfect gentleman and a lady!”
“Mother!”
Mrs. Corantine was fully motivated, and Vio started trembling. There was no escape.
Vio and I began training under Mrs. Corantine’s guidance.
“Phew…”
Walking through the mansion’s garden at dusk, illuminated by my steward’s lamp.
After three hours of training, I slipped away. Vio looked resentful, but I ignored it.
I arrived at Baltzarek’s room.
“Excuse me.”
“Clovis, what do you need?”
A dignified voice echoed in my head.
In the dark, obsidian-like glimmers signaled Baltzarek’s movement.
“I have news. I need to go to the capital soon and will be away from the mansion.”
“I see. Traveling by carriage again?”
“That’s the plan.”
“I’m worried.”
“Baltzarek?”
“Clovis, you are Alfred’s legacy. I will allow you to ride on my back.”
“Really?”
Ride on his back? I had done that with my father as a child, but…
“Are you sure?”
Dragons are proud creatures and rarely allow humans to ride them.
“I am. It’s better than risking your life again.”
“Thank you, Baltzarek.”
“Hmm.”
