The Necromance of Love and Death: Defeated Early in the Game, I Reincarnated as a Tragic Villainous Noble and Rebel Against the Scenario with My Beloved Using My Modern and Game Knowledge - Chapter 36
In the middle of a sunny grassland, Vio, Charles, and I were having lunch, spreading out the bento Jiro had prepared for us.
The contents seemed to be sandwiches. There were so many of them, it felt like more than enough. For Charles, there were even two pieces of steamed chicken br3ast. It looked like enough not just for lunch, but possibly for dinner too.
To keep things from breaking, there were wooden plates and even wet towels included.
“Here you go, Vio.”
“Thanks.”
I handed a wet towel to Vio and wiped my own hands too.
“Nyaa~o.”
“Okay, okay. Just a moment.”
At Charles’s impatient meow, I placed the chicken br3ast on a plate for her. She immediately dug in, devouring it with gusto.
“Well then, shall we eat too?”
“Yes. Let’s eat.”
“Let’s eat.”
I reached for one of the sandwiches from the bento box. I could see the lettuce sticking out, but couldn’t tell what was inside yet.
As I took a bite, the fresh lettuce crunched audibly, and the ripe tomato burst with a sweet yet tangy juice.
The bread had a hint of melted butter, giving it a milk-like sweetness and umami.
Then came the star of the sandwich.
A rich, creamy boiled egg. It had been mashed and mixed with mayonnaise into a sauce. It was the mellow, savory sauce I had taught Jiro about. A tingly kick came from pepper—and mustard. The salt was perfectly balanced, enhancing the flavor of the egg.
Then came the chemistry in my mouth.
The mellow egg sauce met the ripe tomato, drawing out each other’s flavors. The tomato’s fresh acidity washed away the richness of the egg sauce in a refreshing wave.
The crunchy texture of the lettuce added an accent, making me chew faster.
And holding it all together was a baguette-like French bread. Its simple wheat and salt flavor blended with the sandwich fillings, creating ever-changing waves of flavor.
“So good…”
I couldn’t help but murmur it aloud.
Not to brag, but as a marquis’ daughter, I usually eat quite luxurious meals. For a simple dish like this to satisfy me… Jiro is truly amazing.
“This is delicious!”
Next to me, Vio had her hand to her mouth, eyes wide as she stared at her bitten sandwich.
“It’s really good, right? I was just thinking how impressive Jiro is.”
“This isn’t just ‘good’! What is this sauce on the egg!? I’ve never tasted anything this good before!”
“It’s mayonnaise, Vio. You’ve had it before. That’s what it’s called—remember, I came up with the name?”
“Mayonnaise? Wait, this is mayonnaise? But it tastes totally different!”
“Maybe because it’s mixed with egg? Or maybe because you’re eating it with tomato?”
“That might be it. Still, I’m shocked. I thought the same the first time I had mayonnaise, but you really do have a gift for cooking, Kuro.”
“Oh no, I don’t have any real talent.”
It’s not like I invented it or anything. It’s all just knowledge from my previous life.
“Hm?”
As we chatted, a shadow briefly passed overhead. Looking up, I saw a large drang circling above. Its scales gleamed like obsidian. It was Baltzarek.
“He’s holding something in his mouth…?”
As Baltzarek landed softly, I saw what he was carrying—it was a deer. A huge doe.
“I’ve returned. No trouble?”
“Nope, all clear. Is that deer your meal, Baltzarek?”
“Indeed. A Giant Deer.”
In the game, the giant deer was supposed to be a monster over level 120… Maybe this one was an outlier? To Baltzarek, it was apparently just prey.
“It’s huge. Can you even finish it?”
“Easily.”
With that, Baltzarek bit into the deer’s belly.
Immediately, deep crimson bl00d and entrails spilled out, turning what had been a peaceful picnic field into a scene from a horror movie.
“Hmm. Not as good as ranch cattle, but quite tasty. Want some?”
“I’ll pass…”
“Same here…”
“Unyaa~.”
“Charles?”
While Vio and I politely declined, Charles—of all things—seemed interested in trying the Giant Deer.
I hesitated about stopping her, but in the end, I let her do as she pleased.
Charles shoved her head into the belly of the deer, where Baltzarek had already taken a bite, and began to eat.
…I’m definitely going to have to wash her thoroughly afterward.
