The moment Regina swung open the door, a nauseating stench finally reached my somewhat congested nose. It was a powerful, intense odor, as if something rotten had been simmered and aged for years.
Holding my nose and mouth against the discomfort, I surveyed the dim interior. Suddenly, from within, a horde of soldiers clad in tattered armor surged out.
“Grrrrrrrrrrr…rrrrrrrr…”
The soldiers groaned lowly. Their complexion was pallid, their bodies were missing pieces, resembling moving corpses… or rather, these were…
“Living corpses…!” Seriphos’ whisper was audible. So, these were indeed the living dead.
Living corpses were creatures formed when corpses, left unattended without proper disposal, fused with magic, becoming monsters that attacked people. I had heard stories about them countless times, but seeing them was, of course, a first.
“Whoa! They’re packed inside the building! Why!?” Regina shouted while retreating, hurling several daggers at the living corpses.
The daggers struck the living corpses’ foreheads and throats perfectly, but they showed no concern. The horde of corpses began to advance slowly.
“Alright, leave this to me!” In place of Regina, Gandor stepped forward. Swinging his axe, he struck the living corpses with sweeping blows.
The heavy blade of the axe pierced the living corpses’ torsos, and Gandor swung the axe forcefully, as if putting all his strength into it.
The living corpses staggered back as they were struck, but despite being seemingly cut in half, their bodies remained intact, albeit with their contents spilling out. Gandor grinned with delight.
“Oh, unexpectedly tough! Hahaha! Finally, some monsters with a bit of backbone!”
Laughing loudly, Gandor approached the living corpses again and swung his axe at their heads, aiming for the top — thunk! The sound of the axe striking a log echoed.
This time, however, the living corpse’s head split in two, and it collapsed from its knees.
“Alright, who’s next!” Gandor raised his voice cheerfully, readjusting his grip on the axe. The living corpses swarmed around him.
“Woahahaha!” Gandor swung his axe vigorously, knocking down one living corpse after another in quick succession. His actions were truly a demonstration of Gandor’s prowess.
For a while, Gandor dominated the scene, but as the living corpses continued to pour out of the building without pause, Gandor, who had been leading from the front, finally stepped back.
“Hey, there are too many of them! Why are there living corpses in a place like this in the first place!?” Gandor exclaimed in exasperation, while Notos watched him with an incredulous look and crouched down, placing his palm on the ground.
“I don’t know. And you’re out too far. Retreat, you brute… Earth, under my magical power, gather and take shape… Earth Bind!”
As Notos chanted the spell, countless stakes of earth suddenly emerged from the ground around the living corpses. They plunged deep into the lower bodies of the living corpses, halting their advance in one fell swoop.
“Alright, it’s my turn!” Seriphos jumped out. Gripping his sword with both hands, he swung it towards the living corpses several meters away.
“Haaah, Gale Slash!”
Immediately after Seriphos’s shout, something like a crescent-shaped aura emanated from the tip of his sword.
The crescent-shaped aura flew straight and pierced the living corpses, slicing through their faces and torsos without any resistance.
What a terrifying sharpness. Was that also a type of magic? Regardless, he certainly had cool techniques, fitting for a handsome guy like him.
“Alright, let’s continue reducing their numbers!” Regina responded to Seriphos’ call.
“We still don’t know how many enemies there are. Let’s proceed with caution! Colin-chan, I’m counting on you to stick with Matsunaga-san and Isezaki-san, okay?”
“Yes! Mr. Matsunaga, Miss Isezaki, please don’t leave my side!”
Colin, standing in front of me and Isezaki-san, turns towards us and raises her voice. It’s quite reassuring.
It feels somewhat embarrassing to be protected by a little girl, but in this situation, let’s rely on her plenty. Although it suddenly feels like we’re in a zombie movie, having her here makes us feel safe.
―― And so, the struggle of “Stinger” continued.
Regina gave precise instructions, Notos immobilized them, and Seriphos and Gandor defeated the living corpses.
Any stragglers who got close were crushed by Colin’s bare-handed punches.
No one was injured, and we maintained a stable fight.
But how many living corpses were inside this building? They seemed endless, continuously spewing out from within.
Seriphos let out a deep sigh, wiping the sweat from his forehead.
“Phew… Regina, what do you think of this situation?”
“I think it’s about time to wrap it up, but if any more unforeseen events occur, we might have to consider retreat. Plus, these guys are oddly resilient compared to normal living corpses. Could it be that they’re—”
“Oh? You’ve been making noise for a while now… Just who are you all?”
Suddenly, a female voice rang out.
We all turned our attention to the source of the voice—the roof of the living corpse’s dwelling.
There stood a long-haired woman clad in a black dress against the eerie backdrop of the crimson moon. At first glance, she seemed like a sexy older sister, but upon closer inspection, her ears were slightly pointed, and her eyes, the same red as the moon, gleamed with snake-like pupils.
“Demon…,” I heard Isezaki-san mutter beside me.
