When it comes to another world, there’s this image of potions, but I never really paid much attention to their existence until now. Looking back, I think it’s because Isezaki-san, who’s always been by my side, is an expert in recovery magic.
The first time I saw a potion was in the magic stone mine. It was when everyone from the adventurer party “Stinger” was struggling against the Living Dead. Gandor, the axe warrior, was deeply wounded by the Living Dead’s attack. He retreated for a moment and then quickly took out a leather bag from his pocket and poured the liquid inside onto his wound. The gaping, dark red wound quickly closed up, and he charged back at the Living Dead with renewed vigor. It was then that I learned about the existence and effects of potions.
On the way back to Grandain after the incident at the magic stone mine, I asked Regina various questions about potions. By the way, since Isezaki-san never uses them herself, she’s practically a novice when it comes to potions.
Regina, with an amazed look, asked, “Matsunaga-san, you were a traveling merchant, right…?” but kindly explained about potions without further questioning.
According to Regina, potions are mysterious medicines refined by a special technique called alchemy, which combines various herbs, spiritual herbs, and magic herbs. Potions have various effects depending on the recipe, but one of the most representative ones is the healing potion that heals wounds.
However, even the most common healing potions, let alone the lower quality ones, are so expensive that they cost several days’ earnings for ordinary adventurers. Moreover, lower quality potions don’t last long, so they’re not suitable for keeping just in case. Therefore, only advanced adventurer parties like “Stinger” use healing potions, as they earn well.
So, instead of buying potions, ordinary adventurers often rely on wizards who can use recovery magic.
In other words, being a user of recovery magic makes you popular and ensures you never go hungry. And among them, someone who particularly excelled was Isezaki-san, also known as the Great Saintess.
Going off on a tangent, although the common way for adventurers to use healing potions is to apply them directly to wounds, it seems they also work for general bodily discomfort when ingested.
Regina gave examples, prefaced by “There was this idiot who used an expensive potion like this,” of it being effective for hangovers, headaches, stomachaches, shoulder stiffness, lower back pain, knee pain, and eye strain.
In other words, it works for chronic fatigue and pain as well.
Furthermore, it seems that wealthy people regularly drink potions. Many of them are said to live long lives.
Presumably, they’re also curing some kind of physical discomfort due to aging. Truly, it’s a magical medicine.
Surely, there would be buyers in Japan for this. I definitely want to try selling them in Japan. That’s what I thought, but…
The biggest problem is the distribution channels.
Just as I sell cheap whiskey to the wealthy in another world, I want to do business in Japan only with the rich. It’s because it’s easier to make more profit with less effort, and the fewer people involved, the lower the risk of leaks.
However, it’s quite difficult to find wealthy people willing to pay a lot for their health.
The first person who comes to mind through my connections is Mr. Juuzou, but even though he’s retired, he’s a heavyweight in the major corporation “Jounai Group”.
It’s a bit daunting for a commoner like me to act like a salesman to such a big shot.
Mr. Juuzou said he would help with anything, but I’m not that good at begging. I tend to be considerate like everyone else.
If that’s the case, maybe I’ll visit the VIP ward frequently under the guise of visiting Mr. Juuzou, and try to develop customers myself…
Just as I was thinking that, a Kamonegi arrived. It turned out to be Aihara.
(Note: ‘kamo ga negi wo shottekuru’ (鴨がネギをしょって来る), typically shortened to ‘kamonegi’. It means “What a stroke of luck!” or “Here comes a sucker” – but literally means “A duck approaches, carrying a leek on its back”)
Aihara happened to find out about our situation, but it would be a waste to let this opportunity slip by.
I thought I should actively bring her in and have her help with my business. With Aihara, I wouldn’t mind her cooperation at all.
So, I decided to take action to incorporate Aihara into my plan for exploring another world and purchasing potions.
◇◇◇
A few days after the dinner party.
Isezaki-san and Aihara came to my house to teleport to another world.
Aihara, compared to the casual outfits I’ve seen her wear before, appeared in a slightly subdued, light-colored dress with a jacket.
Upon entering my home, Aihara immediately wandered around, looking curious, then spun around in front of me as if showing off her clothes.
“How about it, Senpai? Isn’t this kind of clothes nice? Even you, Senpai, must be impressed by the charm of my new clothes, right?”
“Well, not particularly.”
“Wha-! Such a quick response!”
“But, with this, you wouldn’t stand out even if we went to another world, right? It’s definitely a different impression than usual, but are these clothes Isezaki-san’s personal ones?”
Contrary to Aihara’s showiness, I asked quietly to Isezaki-san, who was standing quietly in the room. I had asked Isezaki-san in advance to coordinate Aihara’s outfit so that she wouldn’t stand out too much in the other world.
“No, they’re not. These are all items Rio bought at the shopping mall the other day.”
“Huh, the other day?”
“Yeah. At that time, Seina-chan recommended some outfits, and I went on a massive shopping spree. I thought I bought too much to wear casually later, but it turned out to be surprisingly lucky.”
Aihara showed off her otherworldly outfit with joy, and Isezaki-san smiled, saying, “That’s good to hear.”
It seemed like they had accidentally bought clothes that could also be worn in the other world, but was it really just a coincidence? Could it be that Isezaki-san had foreseen this much—?
No, that’s probably not it. That was before Aihara found out about many things, and it’s probably just a coincidence after all. Coincidences are terrifying.
While thinking about such things, Isezaki-san, as usual, entered my room to change clothes, followed by Aihara.
“Wow! Your waist is so slim!” “Huh? It’s huge!” “And yet, you still look skinny when you’re wearing that!?” “Seina-chan is amazing after all!”
I could hear Aihara making a fuss, but just as Isezaki-san murmured softly, “Rio-san? Please stop this already, or I—” the room suddenly fell silent.
After a while, Aihara, looking dejected, and Isezaki-san, dressed in a slightly cosplay-like fashion that seemed somewhat out of place in Japan, came out of the room.
Isezaki-san is scary when angry. Both Juuzou-san and Maristel have experienced her wrath. I decided not to mention what happened in the room and moved on with the conversation.
“Alright, let’s go then. Can you lend me your hand?”
“Yes, sir.”
“Oh, right! You’re supposed to hold hands, right? Senpai, it’s a real perk to be able to hold the hands of cute kids like us, isn’t it? Wehehe~”
Aihara, already back to her usual self from her dejected state, teased me, poking my side annoyingly. Very annoying.
“…If you don’t want to, you can just touch my shoulder instead. I’m only doing this because I feel like holding hands is more certain.”
“Oh no! Holding hands is better for me too! I’ll hold hands!”
“Yes! Holding hands is definitely the way to go!”
Aihara stretched out her hand confidently, and Isezaki-san, still bowing, also reached out her hand. I held both of their hands.
The purpose of today’s trip was Aihara’s sightseeing in the other world and purchasing potions.
It might have been a good idea to prepare in advance for potion procurement, but since Aihara is also involved in potion matters, I decided it would be better to show her where to get them.
Maybe I still feel like I’m Aihara’s teacher in some aspects. Well, it’s not a big deal.
By the way, the first destination, at Aihara’s request to “see the castle in the other world,” was decided to be Lady Levia’s residence.
However, just transporting outsiders directly into the castle might not sit well with security. So, we decided to teleport to “Emmy’s Inn” first and then make our way to the castle while walking through the town.
“Alright, let’s go. Dimensional Teleportation!”
With that, our field of vision changed, and we were teleported to “Emmy’s Inn.”
