The place where Isezaki-san and I arrived at using [Dimensional Teleport] was a large rock outcropping. It’s located a short distance from the frontline base in the Carius territory, which we had visited previously.
“Ugh… I can’t believe Levi would use you like this… I’ll have to scold her later,” Isezaki-san muttered, somewhat displeased since Levia-sama asked us to act as couriers. But this level of inconvenience was well within my tolerance.
“Come on, give Levia-sama a break. We’ve received plenty of favors from her, so it’s better to have some work to do rather than feeling guilty about it.”
“If you say so, Uncle…”
She let out a sigh and her eyebrows relaxed. It seemed like Isezaki-san was finally convinced. I’m glad Levia-sama won’t get scolded after all.
With that conversation wrapped up, we nonchalantly walked out from behind the rock towards the base.
As we walked, I looked around. It’s been over a month in this otherworldly time since the fortress was established. Last time, there was nothing but wilderness stretching out endlessly beyond the base, but now the surroundings had completely changed.
Buildings under construction were already visible everywhere, with materials being transported and people bustling about. It was a lively scene, exactly what you’d expect in the midst of town-building.
I’d heard plenty about it before coming here, but with the magic stone mines being redeveloped, it seemed that people were flocking to this place, seeing it as a business opportunity. Of course, Levia-sama’s influence probably played a part in this.
Among the partially constructed buildings, food stalls catering to the pioneers had also popped up here and there. From one of these stalls, a young couple walked out and called out to us.
“Whoa, isn’t that Matsunaga-san and his wife?!”
“H-Hello…”
It was a familiar face—Geeta and Cyril. They had mentioned they were working as guards here. Though they were now wearing armbands with the Carius territory emblem, their appearance hadn’t changed much from their adventurer days. Since they were eating, they were probably on a break.
“Hey, long time no see. Looks like you’re doing well as guards. I heard the Digram army attacked, were you alright?”
Geeta scratched his head awkwardly in response to my question.
“Ah, that… When we got the report that Digram was leading a massive army to attack, I nearly had a heart attack. But it seems most of their forces got wiped out by a swarm of living dead, so they hardly reached us at all. It was kind of a letdown—I was hoping for a little action.”
The fact that someone was controlling the living dead was something only the upper echelon knew. So from Geeta’s perspective, it was probably just an unfortunate accident on Digram’s side. Hearing this, Cyril puffed out her cheeks in annoyance.
“Come on, Geeta. It’s better that there wasn’t a fight.”
“Yeah, but now that we’ve driven Digram away, the number of people coming here has exploded. And these people are causing all sorts of trouble, fights and whatnot. It’s a real headache.”
Geeta sighed as he looked at the crowds of people. Being a guard here meant more than just defending the fortress; it likely involved acting as a peacekeeper too.
“Well, that’s our situation. So, what brings you two here—oh, are you planning to open a shop? If so, do you think you’ll sell fried potatoes?!”
Despite just having eaten, Geeta asked eagerly, looking like he was about to drool.
“No, we’re not here for business this time. We’re running an errand for Levia-sama and need to meet with Captain Hige.”
Our plan was to deliver supplies to Captain Hige and also get permission to enter the area near the mines.
“Captain Hige? Who’s that?”
Geeta tilted his head in confusion. Isezaki-san quickly helped out.
“My husband, I believe his name was Higuner.”
“Right, Captain Higuner.”
“Oh, Captain Higuner! I’d guide you there if I could, but it’s almost time for my patrol.”
(Note: Hige means beard in japanese. Now read that again if you don’t get the joke. Peace~✌ )
“I’ve been there before, so it’s fine. You two take care and keep up the good work.”
“Thanks! See you around, Matsunaga-san and ma’am!”
Geeta waved energetically, while Cyril bowed her head politely. After parting ways with them, we headed towards the frontline base.
◇◇◇
At the entrance to the frontline base, we handed over the letter from Levia-sama to the soldier on guard.
After a short wait, the soldier returned in a hurry and escorted Isezaki-san and me to a building we had visited before.
“Captain Higuner! I’ve brought Matsunaga-sama and Isezaki-sama!”
“Ah, y-yes. Please, show them in.”
At the voice from inside, the soldier opened the door, and we entered.
Inside was the man with a beard—the distinguished Captain Higuner, also known as Captain Hige. As soon as he stood up, he greeted me with a handshake and a broad smile. His demeanor was so different from when we first met that it was almost unsettling.
“We’ve been expecting you! I heard you’ve brought supplies from Grandain…?”
“Yes, and we’d like to be shown to the warehouse if possible…”
“Of course, I’ll guide you myself. This way, please—”
Just as Captain Higuner turned towards the door, we heard the sharp clacking of heels rapidly approaching on the stone pavement outside. It was followed by the door bursting open.
“Hey, hey, Beard Guy! Is Matsunaga here by any chance? Wait, there you are! Matsunaga, I’ve been dying to see yoooouuu!!”
The person who had flung open the door shouted and then, with her lips forming a “3” shape, lunged at me—
“[Eject]”
With my space-time magic, I sent her flying. She crashed into the stone wall with a thunderous boom, causing the room to shake slightly.
Whoa, that was bad. It was such a quick reaction that I might not have held back enough.
As cold sweat secretly trickled down my back, I cautiously observed the woman who had fallen by the wall. She slowly got up and—
“Heyyyy! That was seriously harsh! If I weren’t a demon, I’d be dead right now!”
The demon woman, the necromancer Maristel, voiced her displeasure.
