“Ahem! G-Great Saintess Seina… is it?”
While I covered up my snort and asked, Mr. Carant deeply nodded.
“Yes. When you think of the Great Saintess Seina, you think of healing holy magic. But, she could also use attack magic. I don’t think that part is very well known though.”
“I-I see. Is that so…”
Of course, I know that since I’ve seen it many times myself — but maybe because my response was a bit indifferent, Mr. Carant raised one eyebrow with a hum.
“Oh? It seems you don’t believe me. But… actually, I, Karant, have seen with my own eyes the scene where Lady Seina subjugated a monster!”
He puffed up his plump belly even more. He was looking somewhat proud. I glanced sideways at Isezaki-san. She was shaking her head furiously. But Mr. Carant didn’t notice and continued.
“I still clearly remember that day… About ten years ago, I heard a rumor that a Wyvern had crash-landed for some reason and was retrieved in a nearby village. So I went there to purchase it. Hiring guards would reduce profits, and taking too long to prepare would let other merchants beat me to it — thinking that, foolishly, I set out with no guards. I head there with just an empty carriage and a subordinate acting as a coachman.”
Wyverns are flying monsters. Apparently, they aren’t as strong as something-Dragon types. But because they fly, they’re hard to catch, and their materials are rather rare.
Seems like young Mr. Carant was quite reckless. Hard to imagine that side of him from his current dignified appearance.
“But on the way, we were attacked by a Wyvern that had gotten separated from its group. To be attacked by the very monster I was trying to purchase parts from — such irony. That one seemed to be the one that had fought with the mentioned Wyvern and was covered in wounds. It was very agitated. If we had guards, maybe we could’ve driven it away or defeated it. But with just two amateurs, there was nothing we could do. First the horse was killed, then my subordinate was injured. And finally, it was my turn — just at that moment, Lady Seina, who was returning to the domain capital after a healing tour, appeared.”
Really? I glanced at Isezaki-san. Then, as if she remembered something, her eyes and mouth opened wide.
“Lady Seina stood in front of me. She ignored the knight’s attempt to stop her, and she swung her arm down at the charging Wyvern. In the next moment, a flash of light shot from her and struck the Wyvern directly. And a loud roar echoed. It was truly divine wrath — the Wyvern was instantly charred black and slammed into the ground. That scene is something I will never forget…!”
Mr. Carant passionately clenched his fist and spoke with excitement. Then—
“I-Is that sooo! That’s amazing! Well then, Husband? Shall we proceed with the purchase now?”
Isezaki-san spoke rapidly and tugged hard on my sleeve.
What is it? Maybe she has something to do? But Mr. Carant, all wrapped up in his story, didn’t notice and kept talking.
“After the Wyvern was defeated, I was so shocked that I fell on my butt and was glued to the spot. Then, Lady Seina walked up to me boldly and shouted, ‘Mister! Are you stupid going without guards? Do you want to die that badly!?’ From her outfit, I could tell right away she was the Great Saintess. But I was so overwhelmed by her words and intensity that I couldn’t say anything. I just stood there dumbfounded.”
That image doesn’t quite match the calm Isezaki-san of now… I thought, and then the force pulling my sleeve weakened. Isezaki-san looked down, embarrassed.
Seems like she didn’t want that part of the story heard. But it’s just a childhood story, no need to be that bothered.
“Afterward, Lady Seina even healed my subordinate and, since we’d lost our horse, let us accompany her back to the domain capital. The knight guards were reluctant. But Lady Seina persuaded them, it seemed. On the way, when she heard I was in the monster trading business, Lady Seina became very curious and asked many questions. I still remember how innocent and childlike she was, and it was very heartwarming.”
“I see, Lady Seina was a very kind person,”
I said while looking at Isezaki-san. Her face still red, she kept her eyes down.
“Yes. And from that event, I finally realized the importance of having guards. I also became very interested in the adventurers who work as guards. And I wanted to learn more about their jobs and experiences.”
I see, so the reason Mr. Carant is so knowledgeable about adventurers is because of that experience.
Though I didn’t expect Isezaki-san to be involved. The world is surprisingly small.
“It is unfortunate that Lady Seina has passed away… Even so, the fact that there are still magic users like her out there, I find deeply moving.”
Mr. Carant gazed sentimentally at the nicely roasted Scarlet Bird.
But then he suddenly changed his expression and, looking a little shy, asked me with upturned eyes,
“U-Um… would it be possible to tell me who the adventurer that defeated the Scarlet Bird was…?”
“I’m sorry, but…”
Even though that adventurer is right in front of him, of course I can’t say that.
But since we’ve gone through similar conversations before, Mr. Carant gave up easily.
“I see, that’s unfortunate but it can’t be helped. Even so… Lady Levia really is connected to many capable people. I truly envy her. …I’ve heard she is actively working toward restarting the magic stone mine.”
“So it seems. Word has reached the domain capital as well, huh.”
“Yes, of course. There was talk of our company opening a branch in the settlement that will be built near the mana stone mine. But we haven’t been granted permission, which is quite frustrating.”
“Permission, you say? I don’t think Lady Levia would reject the idea of a merchant company opening a branch…”
After all, it’s Lady Levia who’s been actively gathering people for the mine’s reopening. For the sake of development, merchants are also necessary. And there are already people who’ve started doing business.
When I tilted my head, Mr. Carant replied with a troubled look,
“Well, actually, it’s because of Lady Delixir’s will… There’s been an official order forbidding companies that start doing business in the magic stone mine from opening shops in the domain capital.”
“Huh, I see…..…”
It seems Levia’s older sister, Delixir, is involved.
If that’s the case, then this kind of obstruction might not be the only one.
Things are starting to smell fishy…
“So then, I wish Lady Levia great success. …Ah, sorry, the conversation ran long. Let’s move on to the business negotiations—”
And so, after wrapping up the talk, we proceeded with the business deal with Mr. Carant—as a result, the Treant was sold for 3 million G.
When you consider that the Earth Dragon I brought in on my first visit sold for 100 million G, it feels like a smaller amount. But that one was just an exception—this is still a very high price.
And just as originally planned, I also proceeded with purchasing monster meat.
The landlady had said she wanted to try eating bat-type monsters. And just as she wished, there was meat from a bat-type monster called a Shadow Bat. So I went ahead and bought it.
Apparently, even in this world, it’s considered a bizarre food. And Mr. Carant’s face stiffened slightly. But since I won’t be the one eating it, it’s fine. ……….Though, maybe I’ll be made to eat it too…?
With a bit of that worry in mind, I bought a large amount of monster meat. And we were seen off by Mr. Carant as we left the Dornesia Trading Company.
