The Noble Lady Without Magic Aims to Become an Adventurer! - Chapter 19
Like the calm before a storm, the week passed quietly without incident.
I chose to have dinner with the family but took all my other meals in my room. However, every dinner came with complaints from my younger siblings, who mocked my commoner-like attire and insinuated I reeked. They also looked down on me for having no magical power.
But I can endure this. Soon, dormitory life will begin.
Still, every time I recall what happened today, I feel like I’m about to explode.
Earlier this morning, a man claiming to be my fiancé came to the marquisate.
“Lady Marloa, Master Ahim Disley, the son of Count Disley, has arrived. Please proceed to the salon,” a servant announced.
With Fars escorting me, I headed to the salon. There, I found my supposed fiancé, Ahim Disley, and my younger sister, Sarah.
While the maid poured tea for me, Sarah and Ahim were already enjoying their tea, laughing together.
So that’s how it is.
“Are you Marloa?” Ahim asked.
Is that how one addresses their fiancée upon first meeting?
“…”
“Oh my, are you nervous, sister?” Sarah interjected.
“…”
Sarah’s presence here was odd enough, but it was clear from their behavior that both of them saw me as beneath them.
“Why don’t you say something, sister?” Sarah said, her tone dripping with disdain.
She looked at me with a condescending gaze.
“Oh, and who might that person over there be?” I asked, feigning ignorance. “No one has introduced me.”
“…I’m Ahim Disley, your fiancé,” he said with a slight frown.
“Nice to meet you, fiancé. I’m Marloa Efsée. What brings you here today?” I asked politely.
“Nothing much, just wanted to see what my fiancée looks like. By the way, I hear you’re powerless? I’d be embarrassed if people at the academy found out we’re engaged. So keep it a secret, will you?”
“Understood.”
“Of course, Ahim, I feel the same way! I couldn’t bear having a sister like her,” Sarah chimed in gleefully.
“Indeed. I wish Sarah were my fiancée instead. What a shame,” Ahim agreed.
“Oh, I’d be so happy if you were my fiancé, Ahim. Let’s ask Father to make the switch right away,” Sarah said with excitement.
“Yes, there’s no one as beautiful and promising as you, Sarah,” he replied.
What exactly am I witnessing here?
Did they call me here just to ridicule me?
“If I’m such an embarrassment, I’ll suggest to Father that my engagement be annulled. Since your business here is done, I’ll excuse myself,” I said, rising from my seat. I bowed politely and left the room without even touching my tea.
That’s how my day began, and now, in an attempt to process my pent-up frustration, I’m sparring with Fars in the training grounds.
Stress relief, you might call it.
Afterward, I returned to my room, and Fars cast a cleansing spell on me.
“Your fiancé was quite something. Honestly, you should get out of this house as soon as possible. Whether that’s feasible or not is another question,” Fars said.
“Absolutely. By the way, the tea you made has improved—it’s delicious,” I said, throwing myself onto the sofa and sipping his tea.
“Of course it has! My skills as an attendant are leveling up,” Fars replied with a grin.
We continued chatting about trivial things until the head maid arrived with a message: “The master has summoned you.”
Here we go.
I downed the rest of my tea in one gulp and headed to my father’s study with Fars.
The study was grand, with a large desk and an elegant pair of sofas facing each other. The luxurious carpet and the refined atmosphere oozed wealth. My father and his butler, Otto, were working, with my father holding a quill and seemingly engrossed in his paperwork.
I stood in front of his desk and spoke.
“Father, you called for me?”
“Yes. The academy enrollment process begins this week. You’ll be entering the lady’s department and commuting from home,” he said without looking up.
Oh? Did Otto not inform him of the updates?
I glanced at Otto, who had paused his work and was now smiling serenely as he poured tea.
So he wants me to explain this myself.
“Father, I will be living in the dormitory. Additionally, I’m not enrolled in the lady’s department. The documents should have been submitted last week. Haven’t you seen them?” I asked sweetly, feigning innocence.
“What’s this about?” he asked, finally looking up from his paperwork.
“Father, if I may speak frankly: please disown me and remove me from the family registry,” I said calmly.
“Why would you say that so suddenly?”
“Rather, why wouldn’t I? Since my return to the capital, neither you nor Mother has treated me as part of the family. Even before that, my upbringing and expenses were handled entirely by the butler, Hubert, and my nursemaid, Violeta. Am I to believe that I’m merely a name on the family ledger for your convenience?”
“What nonsense is this, Otto?” my father demanded, turning to his butler.
“Master, do you not recall? When you left for the estate, you stated, ‘A baby doesn’t cost much,’ and as such, no expenses for Lady Marloa were ever paid by the marquisate. The first
expenditure for her was the purchase of five ready-made dresses last week. For context, Lady Sarah frequently orders ten custom-made dresses at a time. Even those five dresses don’t come close to the cost of one of Lady Sarah’s,” Otto explained matter-of-factly.
My father looked utterly shocked, as though hearing this for the first time.
“I lived in a village, Father. I have no idea what it means to be a proper lady. To suddenly be told I’m joining the lady’s department was quite the surprise,” I added.
My father began rifling through the stack of documents on his desk.
“…The knight department? And you’ve already passed the entrance exam!?”
“Yes, and the dormitory arrangements have also been finalized,” I replied.
Just then, a faint ringing sound came from my pocket. Curious, I reached in and pulled out the magical paper I had received during the application process.
As I unfolded it, the magic circle glowed faintly, and an envelope emerged from it.
The envelope bore the academy’s seal.
Otto quickly handed me a letter opener, and I opened it at once.
“What does it say?” my father asked.
I skimmed the contents and handed the document to him.
What impeccable timing.
