The Noble Lady Without Magic Aims to Become an Adventurer! - Chapter 33
“Are you ready for this week’s exams?”
“More or less. I heard the top five in the tournament get bonus points.”
“Really? That’s great. After all, our tuition depends on it.”
As Fars and I chatted, someone I had forgotten approached us, his voice grating.
“Marloa! You won the tournament? How embarrassing. A magicless woman winning? Women should stay quiet and know their place!”
The son of Count Disley decided to pick a fight with us.
“Lord Disley, I don’t recall granting you permission to call me by my name. Isn’t this rather inappropriate behavior?”
“You should just marry me and retire to my estate!”
“Fars, please file a formal complaint against the Disley family.”
“Understood, my lady. This has ruined our meal.”
“Hey, don’t ignore me!”
As he attempted to grab my shoulder, I swiftly stepped aside. Ignoring him seemed like the best option. I was already standing out enough as it was.
Annoyed, I raised my hand to call a servant and asked for dessert. When I continued to ignore him, Count Disley’s son couldn’t take it any longer and raised his hand as if to strike me.
I calmly pointed my fork at his face and spoke coldly.
“If you speak to me again, your handsome face might not remain so intact. Is that clear, ex-fiancé?”
He turned bright red and took a step back.
“Why do you keep bothering me? I believe my family already lodged a formal complaint about this matter.”
“It’s… because Sarah keeps pleading with me. She says, ‘My sister cries every night in her room, saying she loves you. Please, even as a second wife, take her.’”
What nonsense!
Even as her sister, I couldn’t help but be appalled.
He seemed genuinely convinced by her words, despite our engagement having been called off. How he reached such a conclusion was beyond me.
We had only met a handful of times. What could there possibly be for me to like?
“That is completely untrue. I’ve been living in the dormitory and only stayed at the estate for about a month before entering school. Whatever Sarah told you, I recommend you stop taking her words so seriously.”
I stabbed my fork into the dessert the servant had brought and took a bite.
“Now then, excuse me. I trust you’ll refrain from speaking to me again.”
Fars and I stood up and left the table. As we reached the dormitory, Fars muttered, “That guy’s out of his mind.”
“Fars, please let my family know to file another complaint with his family. And inform my family I’ll stop by after my royal audience.”
“Understood.”
Fars gave a polite bow.
In the following days, I continued my usual routine of studying for exams and returning to the dorm to focus on my studies.
A letter arrived from my father, asking me to come home. I wrote back, informing him I’d visit briefly after my audience with His Majesty. Of course, I kept my annoyance to myself.
Exam week ended without issue, and the day to visit the castle arrived.
Fars and I carefully checked our uniforms for wrinkles before heading out. At the castle gates, the guards seemed to have been informed, allowing us entry without delay.
A servant guided us from the entrance to what seemed to be an audience chamber. Though it was smaller than expected, it appeared to serve the purpose.
As the doors opened, His Majesty, the Crown Prince, and Prince Sherman greeted us warmly.
Fars and I performed formal greetings and deep bows to His Majesty.
“Formalities aren’t necessary. Marloa Efsee and your companion, Fars, you achieved remarkable results in the tournament. As expected from Levine’s students.”
“Father, did you know? Marloa has no magic. Isn’t that incredible?” Prince Sherman interjected.
“…Ah, Sherman, you weren’t aware. Marloa does have magic.”
Prince Sherman looked stunned at His Majesty’s revelation.
“But I detected no magic from her during the tournament.”
“Indeed. Only a select few know of her magic—her biological parents don’t even know. Isn’t that right?”
“Yes, Your Majesty. When I was a baby, the temple performed a magic test, which concluded I had no magic. I was raised with Fars in a village at the edge of our estate by a nanny.
“My magic manifested during childhood, but the priest at the church suggested it might be some sort of divine revelation, so I was instructed to keep it hidden. Though my magic capacity is small, I do possess magic.”
I decided honesty was the best policy.
His Majesty then recounted a story from my time at the temple.
Apparently, during one visit to the temple, Prince Sherman had begun crying uncontrollably and releasing his magic. The king and queen, unable to console him, were at a loss. It was then that I, standing in line, reacted to the prince’s magic and began to show signs of my own.
Though the king initially dismissed it, believing my magic to be negligible, he now apologized for the misunderstanding and the hardships I endured as a result.
Prince Sherman seemed genuinely shaken.
“It’s impressive that you kept your magic hidden while winning the tournament. Both you and Fars showed remarkable skill. I’d like to have you as my guard,” the Crown Prince said with a smile.
“Brother, I’d also like them as my attendants,” Prince Sherman added.
His Majesty turned to us. “What do you think, Marloa, Fars?”
“Your Highnesses, it’s an honor to receive such offers. Fars aspires to serve as a knight in the royal palace, so I hope you’ll allow him the opportunity when the time comes.
“As for me, while I’m grateful, I must decline. As you can infer from my earlier request, I don’t wish to remain a noble. Being labeled a ‘magicless knight’ would tarnish your reputation. I dream of becoming an adventurer and traveling the world with Mr. Levine.”
Prince Sherman chuckled. “Rejected again, Brother.”
Fars then added, “While I do aim to join the knights and one day become a captain, I am currently Lady Marloa’s attendant. I can’t leave her side—if I did, she’d likely drop out of the academy to pursue adventure immediately.
“Though we’ve only been at the academy for half a year, I’ll continue to serve as her attendant until we graduate.”
His words felt like an insult, though they were true. I simply smiled in response.
“Marloa is quite the spirited young lady,” His Majesty laughed. “If I were twenty years younger, I might have joined her on her adventures.”
His Majesty then added, “I hold both of you in high regard.
Continue to support my sons and serve this kingdom well.”
“We are deeply honored, Your Majesty,” Fars and I replied in unison, bowing once more.
With that, the royal audience came to a close.
