- The Noble Lady Without Magic Aims to Become an Adventurer!
- Chapter 49 - Sarah’s Perspective (2)
“That’s right, because everyone believed my sister was so popular. Surely, they must think I’m such a kind and caring younger sister for being so considerate of my sister, who has no magical abilities!”
“That… that’s not something Lady Marloa would want, I think,” he stammered.
The others around us nodded in agreement. Why?
“That’s not true! My mother always tells my sister this, and as her younger sister, I feel sorry for her too!”
“Lady Sara, do you always speak of your sister as being pitiable like that?”
“? Of course, I do! If I don’t find someone suitable for my poor, magic-less sister, who will?”
When I answered honestly, the young man was at a loss for words and seemed to be deep in thought.
From beside us, a noblewoman, likely from a viscount’s family, entered the conversation.
“Lady Sara, aren’t you being too harsh on Lady Marloa, even as her sister?”
“Ha! Harsh? Me? I’m doing this all out of love for my sister! You’re the one who doesn’t understand anything! How dare you, a mere viscount’s daughter, speak to me like this!”
I couldn’t hold back my anger at the viscount’s daughter’s words, and my voice rose. Seeing this, Lady Eleanor approached our table. She must have been concerned for me!
“What’s going on here?”
“Lady Eleanor! I’m sorry for causing a disturbance. She was insulting me!”
“I wasn’t insulting her! I never said anything of the sort!”
“Is that true?”
“The entire time, I was speaking with Lady Sara,” the young man explained. “Lady Sara has been disparaging Lady Marloa, and this young lady simply defended her.”
Lady Eleanor listened calmly, her expression unchanged, and murmured, “…I see.”
“Lady Sara, Lady Marloa is a highly capable person whom both I and Prince Shellman regard as an ideal candidate for a close aide.”
“Lady Eleanor! Please consider making me your aide instead of my sister. Unlike my magic-less, washed-up knight of a sister, I have magic and would be far more useful!”
“Lady Sara, why do you belittle your own sister to such an extent?”
“I’m not belittling her! I just feel sorry for my sister, who has no magical abilities. It’s my responsibility to find her a fiancé!”
“Why do you feel it’s your duty to find her a fiancé? What does the Marquis of Efsée think about this?”
“Father is kind, so he says nothing. That’s why I’m stepping in and working hard on her behalf!”
“This conversation is over. Today’s tea party is meant to foster goodwill, not to search for fiancés. If you persist, I will have to ask you to leave.”
“W-What? That’s so cruel! I was just thinking about my sister—”
As I tried to plead my case to Lady Eleanor, Prince Shellman joined her side and spoke to me.
“Lady Sara, I have already summoned the Marquis of Efsée. You are to leave immediately.”
“W-What? Father?”
“You there, escort her to the palace gates.”
“As you command.”
At the prince’s order, a knight moved to escort me out. Someone, help me! I looked around tearfully, but everyone’s eyes were filled with judgment.
Why?
Why?
“Come along. If you resist, you’ll find yourself in the noble prison, so I suggest you cooperate.”
“…”
The knight escorted me to the palace gates, where my father was already standing, talking to someone.
“Father!”
“Sara, we’re leaving.”
“Now that Lady Sara is here, I shall take my leave.”
“My apologies for any trouble caused.”
Without even giving me a chance to speak, I was shoved into the family carriage and sent home.
As soon as we arrived back at the estate, Father called Otto and summoned the family to his study.
“Gairon, what’s with the sudden summons? Oh, Sara, you’re back already?”
“Sara, what’s wrong? You look pale. Did something happen?”
Father, his expression stern, gestured for everyone to sit down.
“At the tea party earlier, Sara earned Prince Shellman’s disfavor.”
“What? What did Sara do?”
“Sara, what happened? Tell me.”
“I didn’t do anything wrong! It’s Marloa’s fault! I only asked her classmates at the table if there was anyone who might be willing to take my poor, magic-less sister as a second wife. That’s all!”
At my words, Father furrowed his brows, and Mother looked troubled, resting her chin on her hand.
I didn’t do anything wrong, did I?
“Well, there’s nothing wrong with that, is there? Marloa should be grateful to Sara for her efforts, given her lack of magic.”
At Terra’s words, Father and Otto’s expressions grew even graver.
“Sara, Terra, do you truly believe that?”
“Of course! Father, Sara didn’t do anything wrong.”
“Sara, do you think so too?”
“Father, I’m not at fault! I even told Lady Eleanor that I wanted to be her aide instead of Marloa. I’d be much more capable than my magic-less sister!”
Father put his hand to his forehead as if in frustration. What’s the matter?
“Sara, did you really say such things to Lady Eleanor?”
“Yes, and I wasn’t wrong!”
“That’s right! Sara only spoke the truth!” Terra backed me up.
“You both need to be re-educated. Shas, what have you been teaching them?”
“I haven’t done anything! I only switched Marloa’s invitation to Sara because she wanted to attend instead. Don’t be too harsh on her, Gairon. Sara didn’t mean any harm.”
“You think so? Let me make it clear. Marloa may not have magic, but she has worked hard to carve her own path, earning the trust of Prince Shellman and Lady Eleanor as their aide.
She has excelled in the martial tournament, consistently ranked in the top ten academically, and is capable enough to be considered a suitable match for royalty.
And yet, her own family, the ones who should support her, are the first to undermine her. Have you any idea how shameful that is? This family is not so destitute that we need to sell off our daughter’s reputation to survive.”
“Gairon, you’re being too harsh. Sara was only trying to help because Marloa lacks magic.”
“Shas, if you continue to defend them, you’ll be complicit. Any further actions that disgrace Marloa or our family will result in separation. Otto, contact Hubert immediately. Terra will be sent to Violeta, and Sara will go to Doron.”
“Father! Why do I have to go to Uncle Doron’s place? I don’t want to! I didn’t do anything wrong!”
“Me neither! I don’t want to go to some village. It’s all Sara’s fault!”
Both Terra and I protested, but Father ignored us, issuing precise instructions to Otto.
Mother, looking pale, said nothing to defend us this time.
“Sara, you have brought disgrace upon yourself with Prince Shelman and Lady Eleanor. Be prepared never to return to the capital. Learn properly under Doron’s guidance.”
“N-No, Father!”
Despite our resistance, I was sent to live with Uncle Doron.
Terra, though crying and resisting, was also sent to the village where Marloa had once lived.
…How did things end up like this?
