The Noble Lady Without Magic Aims to Become an Adventurer! - Chapter 5
“Where should we go today?”
“I heard there are magic stones upstream by the river. Adventurers from the city are flocking there.”
“Really? That river has fish too—let’s check it out!”
As usual, we equipped ourselves with our mountain-walking gear and set off. Even though it’s close, the forest is known for its monsters, so we always come prepared.
In case we hunt and bring something back, we carry bags, ropes, small knives, and healing ointments whenever we leave the village.
We carefully followed the river upstream, listening to the sounds of birds and the rustling wind.
Eventually, we came to a steep, rocky slope covered in slippery moss.
“How do the adventurers climb this?”
“They probably use magic to get up,” I said thoughtfully.
Fars—who can use magic—carried me and jumped, landing us effortlessly at the top of the slope.
I could have done it myself, but I avoid using magic unless absolutely necessary. Who knows who might be watching? Fars, aware of my situation, doesn’t question it.
After about thirty minutes of walking, we finally reached the river’s source, where water bubbled up from the ground.
We sat by the water’s edge, chatting while keeping a cautious eye on our surroundings. The forest can be unpredictable, and monsters could appear at any moment.
…I couldn’t sense any danger nearby.
“Fars, do you think the magic stones are in the water?”
“Probably. That’s where they’d fall, right?”
“Typical—you’re always so vague!”
“Come on, we’ve got time. Let’s look for them!”
We stood up and began searching the river and its surroundings, splitting up to cover more ground.
Our treasure hunt for magic stones felt more like a fun game, and we were both excited.
“Look, Fars! I found a small magic stone—it’s so shiny!”
I picked up a few small magic stones and put them in my bag. Fars seemed to be doing the same.
“They’re all small, though. Maybe the bigger ones have already been taken.”
“Probably. Still, exploring was fun. Should we head back?”
“Yeah.”
Just as we turned to leave, the scent and presence of a monster drifted in from upwind.
The atmosphere shifted immediately, becoming tense.
Fars and I exchanged a silent nod, slowly stepping back to retreat. But before we could leave, the monster burst through the underbrush, heading straight for us.
“Fars, it’s a Big Bear!”
“Tch. A beast, huh? Dragging this one home is going to be a hassle.”
“It’s pretty big, but we can manage if we pull it together.”
“Fine, let’s do it.”
We quickly took our stances. Fars launched a Fireball at the Big Bear, and I enhanced my body with magic. Taking advantage of the bear’s hesitation, I swung my sword at its neck, severing its head, while Fars circled around and plunged his sword into its heart.
The Big Bear collapsed, unmoving.
“Phew, we did it. Thanks, Fars.”
“Yeah, that was easier than I thought.”
We let our guard down, relieved after defeating the Big Bear.
As we tied a rope around the carcass, another monster emerged from the underbrush, catching us off guard.
…A Great Snake.
A vicious and fast predator, it’s not an opponent we wanted to face.
Before Fars could react, the snake’s tail whipped him, sending him flying.
“Fars!”
I glared at the Great Snake, raising my sword to keep it at bay while quickly considering my next move. The snake’s scales were damaged in places, and one of its eyes was injured.
Had someone else attacked it earlier?
A wounded beast is even more dangerous, its aggression heightened. My only option was to strengthen my body further and use magic to take it down.
As I readied my sword for an attack, I heard a voice chant Ice Lance from somewhere nearby. Several spears of ice struck the Great Snake, piercing it and killing it instantly.
“Are you two okay?”
From the underbrush emerged a man who looked like an adventurer.
“I’m fine, but Fars was thrown pretty hard,” I said, glancing toward where Fars had landed.
“Ouch, ouch… Maroa, are you okay?”
“Fars! Are you hurt?”
Fars walked back, rubbing his backside.
“I’m fine. I managed to land without injury, but I slammed my tailbone. That stupid snake… Anyway, who are you?”
Fars, still wary, addressed the adventurer.
“I’m Allen, an adventurer by hobby. I’m ranked A, believe it or not.”
An A-rank adventurer? In this remote village? That’s unheard of.
Allen used healing magic on Fars’s sore backside.
“Thanks, man!”
“Don’t mention it. It’s my fault the Great Snake escaped in the first place. Fars, can’t you use healing magic yourself?”
“I can use magic, but I’m not great at it. I mostly stick to attack spells—healing magic isn’t my thing.”
Allen nodded thoughtfully.
“And you, Maroa? Can you use magic?”
“Me? No, I can’t. I don’t have any magical power.”
Allen raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised. He opened his mouth to say something, but I quickly suppressed my magical presence and shifted the conversation.
“Fars, let’s hurry up and take the Big Bear back. Everyone will worry if we’re late.”
“Y-Yeah, you’re right. See you around, Allen!”
We waved goodbye to the adventurer and hurriedly dragged the Big Bear back toward the village.
To make things easier, we floated the bear down the river, letting the current carry it closer to the village. Near the village, Fars used wind magic to lift the carcass, and we carried it the rest of the way home.
“Hubert! Violeta! Reco! We’re back!”
The three of them stared at the enormous beast we’d brought back, their faces clearly saying, Not again.
“My lady, you went hunting again, didn’t you?” Hubert sighed.
“No, we didn’t! Fars and I were just treasure hunting for fun. We found this Big Bear on the way back, so we brought it home. Look, we even cleaned the cut and drained the bl00d properly!”
Hubert pressed a hand to his forehead, exasperated.
“Even the villagers who hunt rarely bring back a beast this large. It’s always you and Fars who manage this, my lady.”
“Well, maybe Reco is just that good of a teacher. It’s easy for the two of us to take down something like this.”
“When will you become a proper young lady? Violeta worries so much about you!”
As usual, Violeta’s lecture began. Fars and I exchanged a glance, silently agreeing to endure it together.
Except, as always, Fars managed to sneak away, joining Reco as he prepared to take the Big Bear to the butcher.
In the end, I was left alone to face Violeta’s scolding.
Fars, you’ll pay for this later!
Well, this is just a typical day in my life.
