The Noble Lady Without Magic Aims to Become an Adventurer! - Chapter 9
“Alright, now that the registration is complete, let’s take on a quest.”
“Yes, Allen-sensei!”
We followed our teacher to a large bulletin board nearby.
Various requests were posted on it, and at the top, we saw ones marked with “A-rank adventurers wanted!” Meanwhile, we were at the very bottom, starting at Rank F.
“Let’s gather medicinal herbs, detoxifying plants, and take down some goblins to level up to E-rank quickly.”
With that, Sensei handed three request slips to the receptionist to accept the quests.
For beginner adventurers like us, the first quests are usually supervised by a guild member or an adventurer ranked C or higher who explains the process. However, since we were learning directly from our A-rank teacher, no guild member would accompany us.
The three of us chatted with Sensei as we left the town and walked along the road toward the village. After a short walk, we veered off into a grassy field. What I had always assumed to be just weeds turned out to be medicinal herbs, as Sensei pointed out. It seemed that this field was a natural growth area for both medicinal and detoxifying plants.
“There are so many here! I never noticed before.”
“Falce, Loa, take out your knives and carefully pick the upper leaves. Whatever you do, don’t uproot the plants.”
“Why is that, Allen-sensei?”
“If you only cut some leaves, they’ll grow back. But if you pull them up or cut them at the root, they won’t grow again. If they’re gone when you need them next time, it could cause trouble. It’s important to leave nature intact for future use.”
“I see. That’s good to know.”
Listening to Sensei’s lecture, we gathered herbs and detoxifying plants before heading to a goblin nest. Since goblins occasionally appeared in the village, we’d already defeated them several times before and thought it would be easy.
Goblins were humanoid monsters, slightly taller than knee height, aggressive, and living in groups. Larger variants, like Goblin Kings, were easy to distinguish because of their size. They were ideal targets for beginner adventurers.
By the way, they weren’t cute at all, had no useful materials, and offered little profit.
“Sensei, there’s a goblin nest over there.”
“Alright, go ahead and take them down.”
Sensei stayed behind to observe as we nodded at each other and signaled our moves. Falce made the first strike, and I handled the goblins that tried to flee.
Goblins were weak enough that we didn’t need to use body enhancement techniques to defeat them. Thanks to a year of solid training in the basics, we could take them down more easily than before.
I could feel how much stronger I had become, and it seemed Falce felt the same, as we allowed far fewer goblins to escape. Falce alone could probably wipe out the entire nest. While thinking that, I continued slaying goblins one by one. Falce had already taken down about twenty by the time we finished.
“Allen-sensei, the nest is clear of goblins!” Falce called out.
Sensei checked inside the nest before emerging.
“Falce, you’re still too rough. Carelessness like this could be fatal later. Be more mindful.”
He said this while pulling out a goblin he had captured. Then, he tossed it toward me. Resigned, I finished it off, completing the task.
We gathered the goblin corpses, threw them back into the nest, and Falce used [Fire] to burn them partially. Then, we covered the remains with dirt to bury the nest.
Falce ended up covered in goblin bl00d, which was typical for those on the frontlines. I cast [Clean] to clean us both up. Leaving the smell on us could attract other monsters.
“Alright, we’ve completed the quest. Let’s head back.”
“Yes, Sensei!”
We returned to town, chatting about what we had learned today. Sensei gave us feedback on our strengths and areas for improvement.
Back at the guild, we completed the paperwork and were promoted to E-rank.
“Sensei, we’re E-rank now!”
“Congratulations. Now you can take on more advanced quests. Let’s head home for today.”
With that, we returned to the village. Over dinner, we naturally talked about the day’s adventures. Falce and I shared all the details, and Rekka seemed a bit envious—she’d wanted to join us for the goblin hunt.
Apparently, Rekka had registered as an adventurer after moving to the village and was ranked A. I had no idea! She hadn’t needed to register while working as a guard in the royal capital, but in the village, having a guild card was more useful.
Rekka often discussed swordsmanship with Sensei. It turned out she was strong, too. She would join us for future hunts as part of her training, and I looked forward to forming a party of four for monster hunting. It sounded fun!
But Levain-sensei wasn’t about to let us neglect our studies.
The next day was packed with lessons, and Falce looked as though his soul had left his body. I chose to ignore it.
After a few days of studying, we prepared for another hunt. This time, Rekka would join us. When we were ready to leave, Rekka was already waiting at the door, fully prepared, and said, “You’re late!”
“Allen-sensei, what are we hunting today?”
Sensei checked the bulletin board and answered, “You’re still beginners, so let’s go for magic birds today.”
“Magic birds? I’ve never seen one before. They’re not near the village, are they?”
“Correct. Magic birds are like wild turkeys but much more aggressive. They live in groups on the plains east of town. They’re easy to spot, as they’re large birds about the size of goblins. However, they are very aggressive, so be careful. The quest requires five of them.”
Sensei handed the request to the receptionist and registered our four-member party.
I was excited yet nervous about the magic birds. After all, their meat occasionally appeared on our dinner table. If we brought some back, Violeta would surely be delighted.
We left town and walked for about an hour to reach the plains. Scattered across the expanse were small groups of magic birds. Despite being birds, they couldn’t fly, but they ran quickly. They had three horns and sharp teeth in their beaks for biting and pecking.
“Here we are. Start by taking down two on your own. If you have trouble, Rekka will back you up.”
Before I could reply, Falce launched a [Fireball] at a magic bird. To our surprise, it leaped up, batted the fireball to the ground with its foot, and charged at Falce with two others.
“Falce! What are you doing? That’s not how you handle it!” I shouted, running diagonally to put distance between us. Falce, unfortunately, got pecked by the birds. Serves him right.
I drew my sword, sneaked up behind one bird, and decapitated it. The second noticed me, but I quickly dealt with it the same way. Their long necks made it easy to strike when distracted. Falce managed to slay the third.
“Man, that hurt. I tried to block them, but they dodged my sword. These guys are tough!”
“That’s because you made them angry, Falce. But I didn’t get hurt at all,” I replied.
Laughing, we ran toward the next group. Two more birds to go. I’d love to hunt a few extra to take home as a treat.
Our next target was a group of five.
