Chapter 2: Waiting for Song Qi to Return
“Your pheromone levels are normal.”
“Your Alpha neural fluctuations are stable.”
“Your Alpha breathing and heart rate are normal…”
Zhou Shuyu heard these words in a daze. When she opened her eyes, she found herself surrounded by doctors in white coats.
Her head and hands were covered with electrode pads, their cold touch making her freeze.
These devices seemed to have been brought by the doctors. Remembering what happened yesterday, Zhou Shuyu felt a pang of fear, but she didn’t dare to show it. She tried her best to control her heart from beating too fast.
The sight of so many doctors had startled her.
She thought her soul swap had been discovered and that she was about to be taken away for research.
But based on the current situation, that didn’t seem to be the case.
Zhou Shuyu’s original name was Zhou Shuyu, a homophone of the original owner’s name, but with different characters. She had been in this ABO world for a year now.
In her previous life, Zhou Shuyu was a rising surgical doctor who had tragically died in a medical dispute.
When she opened her eyes again, she was lying in a hospital bed. At first, she thought she had miraculously survived, but the inexplicably high-tech, private medical suite and the doctors’ words told her she had transmigrated.
Perhaps heaven had pitied her and given her a second chance at life.
But it didn’t seem to be all that pitying…
This was an ABO world. In her past life, when she was stressed, she would often read ABO novels.
She knew all the settings by heart and would even get excited about some of the more unique ones. Now, she had actually transmigrated into an ABO world!
Even though she loved ABO literature, she had hoped to be a Beta, as Betas were the closest to normal people on her home planet, Earth.
However…
She had transmigrated into an Alpha. The original Alpha was a colonel who had been severely wounded in a war. After being placed in a medical pod, she was soon declared brain-dead. When Zhou Shuyu woke up, she had a full physical examination.
One thing was quite bad: Zhou Shuyu hadn’t fully inherited the original owner’s memories. But what was even worse was the aftermath of the war. Her gland was severely damaged. During her monthly estrus, she would almost completely lose her mind. On all other normal days, she felt a constant, uncomfortable heat, making it hard to control herself.
Zhou Shuyu had undergone a year of rehabilitation, but had only recovered by half. Still, she was grateful; at least there had been some improvement.
During this year, she hadn’t just focused on gland repair. She had also been learning how to adapt to the world outside of her isolation room.
After a year, she was successfully deemed not a threat to society and was allowed to reintegrate.
As a retired colonel, she received a substantial monthly stipend. A portion of her subsequent medical bills were covered by the Loxia family, and after paying those costs, Zhou Shuyu was supposed to have a large sum of money left over…
But… the original owner seemed to have been a gambler. She had joined the military early to escape debt. Even after becoming a colonel, she hadn’t paid back any of her old gambling debts, and her hands were completely empty. No one knew where her past salary had gone…
As soon as Zhou Shuyu left the hospital, she was found by her creditors. Now, her entire monthly stipend had to go toward paying off the debt, and she even had to start working.
And the job of looking after the Song family’s young lady, which she had only just started three months ago, had already resulted in a serious mistake.
Remembering yesterday, Zhou Shuyu was so ashamed she wanted to cry. She was a 24-year-old adult, having an estrus in front of an 18-year-old kid!
Now that she was awake, she wished she could die again! She wanted to forget yesterday’s memories, but they were only becoming clearer.
“Zhou, please calm down.”
The speaker was Song Yulin, the leader of the Song family’s medical team and Song Qi’s biological uncle.
The medical team taking care of Zhou Shuyu belonged to the Song family. It was their top squad, all eight of them.
Zhou Shuyu’s heart inexplicably tightened. Alarming the Song family’s medical team was not a good sign.
It meant that the head of the Song family knew everything that had happened yesterday.
Zhou Shuyu took a deep breath, letting her heart rate slow down, and didn’t make any big movements.
She might not have a healthy body, and now she was likely to lose her job.
“Captain Song, can I still continue to protect the young lady?” Zhou Shuyu asked. After yesterday’s incident, she felt she was no longer qualified for the job, but she still wanted to shamelessly fight for it.
After all… Song Qi seemed to have some interest in her. She had said she wouldn’t be fired for now. And the crucial point was that if the Song family’s mercenary group kicked her out, no one else would hire her.
In Loxia, retired soldiers could only work as mercenaries or bodyguards. Other jobs were not suitable for them.
Of course, most retired soldiers had a high stipend and didn’t live as miserably as Zhou Shuyu, having to work for a living.
Zhou Shuyu was an exception.
The Song family paid her too much. Few other families would offer what the Song family did, which was why she had rushed to take the job, even after hearing that their young lady had a strange personality.
Because she had inherited the original owner’s body, she had fully mastered all the combat skills during her gland rehabilitation. She couldn’t go back to her old profession; the medical requirements in this world were a hundred times stricter than on Earth, and only Betas were allowed.
Fortunately, she had been accepted by the Song family’s mercenary group…
Zhou Shuyu looked at Song Yulin with some trepidation. He, in turn, smiled slightly.
“Zhou, we won’t fire you. You are not only one of the rare Summer-born people in Loxia, but you are also a rare Alpha with a 95% matching rate to little Qi.”
“If you are willing, our Song family can give you anything you want, as long as you are with little Qi.”
Song Yulin smiled faintly, his gentle demeanor masking an unquestionable dominance, as if he was certain no one would refuse any price the Song family offered.
Zhou Shuyu tried her best not to let her emotions show too much. Even with various instruments attached to her body, she tried to remain as steady as possible.
“Captain Song, now is not a good time to talk. I want to rest first.”
Zhou Shuyu paused, then decided she wanted to see Song Qi first.
Listening to Song Yulin, she knew she wouldn’t be leaving the Song family, but her future job duties… she still needed to talk to Song Qi face-to-face.
This was something that had to be discussed with the person directly involved. What was the point of Song Yulin coming to talk about it?
“I want to hear the young lady’s opinion first.”
“Alright. Little Qi is out today and probably won’t be back until around nine tonight,” Song Yulin said calmly, pushing his glasses up the bridge of his nose.
“Your body needs to be properly recuperated right now. I’ll go take care of other things. If you have any problems, you can send someone to find me. Taking care of your issues is my top priority right now.”
Zhou Shuyu frowned but nodded in agreement.
A 95% matching rate… a rarer match than a giant panda.
She recalled Song Qi’s posture from earlier. Although she had been a little dazed, she seemed completely sober, including when she was teasing her.
She didn’t seem to care that she might be accidentally marked by her. Even after initially saying she would only help and not mark her, she seemed to have a certain confidence, as if she was certain she wouldn’t be marked by anyone…
After Song Yulin left, Zhou Shuyu’s heart rate suddenly sped up. Her pheromone concentration hadn’t changed, but even this small shift was recorded by someone.
Zhou Shuyu was tired from all the thinking. She closed her eyes, just waiting to see Song Qi that night.
She absolutely, positively could not lose this job.
