Chapter 3: Out of Office
â—ŽI don’t do things outside of workâ—Ž
Zhou Shuyu hadn’t eaten, but the IV drip was enough to sustain her energy while she was confined to bed.
Song’s family medical team had everything perfectly organized and orderly. She felt like a gorilla in a zoo, with different people coming to observe her every moment…
That’s not quite right. To be more precise, she felt like a test subject.
The constant flow of people in and out made Zhou Shuyu feel irritated.
But she didn’t say anything to drive them away. After all, she was just a small mercenary. Throwing a tantrum or trying to fight a losing battle would be useless. It was better to just behave.
The IV drip left her feeling weak. In the evening, an auntie brought up a meal of two dishes and a soup, all easily digestible food suitable for a patient.
This was Song Qi’s house. The kitchen was on the first floor, and her current location was a second-floor guest room.
It was essentially her room. To protect Song Qi, she had to sleep as close to her as possible.
The best place would have been at Song Qi’s bedside, but Song Qi didn’t like being too close to others, so the guest room became her designated space.
After dinner, Zhou Shuyu waited patiently for Song Qi to return.
She wanted to hear if Song Qi was really going to go along with the Song family’s arrangements.
In her previous life, she hadn’t had any contact with people from the upper echelons of society. She was just a small-time surgeon.
She didn’t want to get involved in the affairs of the aristocracy, nor did she dare to.
Would they really treat her as a partner… or rather, a partner was just a nice way of putting it. Was Song Qi really willing to be a test subject too?
Song Yulin had so casually decided her and Song Qi’s future in just a few sentences. Was Song Qi really okay with that?
Having nothing to do made her feel sleepy. As Zhou Shuyu waited for Song Qi to return, she unexpectedly fell asleep again. Perhaps the medication the medical team had given her had a long-lasting sedative effect.
When Zhou Shuyu opened her eyes again, Song Qi was already sitting at a table a meter away from her bed, dressed in pajamas.
“You’re awake?”
Song Qi saw that Zhou Shuyu was awake and spoke softly.
“Team Leader Song told me something about our compatibility. I understand what the Song family means, but I want to make one thing clear: I won’t agree to anything outside of work.”
“What if we add more money? My uncle should have told you about the Song family’s prices. Whatever price you name, the Song family can afford it.” Song Qi looked at Zhou Shuyu indifferently.
Zhou Shuyu felt a hint of suppressed anger at Song Qi’s attitude. Of course, she understood what Song Yulin meant, but was that kind of suggestion something she really didn’t care about?
“But I don’t want to do things outside of work, and I don’t want to have any relationship with an employer other than an employment one. For anything else, I only want it to be consensual and happen naturally,” Zhou Shuyu said, lowering her gaze so her eyes were unreadable.
What she said was truly from the heart.
She was just too straightforward. Otherwise, in her previous life, nearing thirty and having worked for many years, she would have been promoted to department head long ago, instead of having her title constantly held back.
Song Qi’s eyes flickered as she looked at Zhou Shuyu, and then she chuckled softly.
“Sister~ we were so passionate last night, weren’t we? Is sister going to deny it now?”
“I even have a photo of you, sister.”
…They hadn’t done anything! But that photo… Zhou Shuyu’s expression became very grim.
Song Qi walked closer to Zhou Shuyu’s bed and slowly sat down on it. The soft bed instantly sagged with her weight.
Zhou Shuyu didn’t move, quietly watching her.
“I’ve looked at your file. You’ve been excellent since you were a child. You were recruited into the military at seventeen.”
Song Qi spoke with great interest, her gaze fixed on Zhou Shuyu’s face, as if she didn’t want to miss a single one of her expressions.
Zhou Shuyu frowned slightly. Yes, this was all the same as the information she had found herself. The original owner was clearly a very outstanding person.
But the reason she entered the military early was not because of a special recruitment, but to escape foreign debt… This short memory had always existed.
She had long been suspicious of the original owner’s debts, but she had no leads.
“What’s so strange about that? The fact that I can join the Song’s mercenary group shows that I have the ability.”
“But I found something interesting.”
“You have a loan shark debt, and when they found you, the interest on that money rolled up into an astronomical figure,” Song Qi said. “But someone like you isn’t tempted by the Song family’s price.”
“Since money can’t move you, what’s the reason for your refusal?”
“I’m very curious. You responded so directly to my pheromones. Is it that I’m not attractive enough?”
…How was she supposed to answer that? Zhou Shuyu frowned. The reason she had waited for Song Qi to return to talk to her was that she was worried Song Qi might be tied to the Song family because of their compatibility, just like her.
She hadn’t expected that Song Qi was actually accepting of it.
Now, with Song Qi’s one-two punch, Zhou Shuyu’s mind was buzzing.
Song Qi’s posture as she sat there was too imposing, making Zhou Shuyu instinctively uncomfortable.
“I haven’t thought about it, but my answer is still no,” Zhou Shuyu repeated.
“Wouldn’t it be better to just agree? If you’re with me, you can have a lot of things you can’t even imagine,” Song Qi said.
Her expression was innocent, and she seemed to genuinely not understand Zhou Shuyu.
“Miss, as you said, I have a large amount of foreign debt on me. I don’t have much left, and I don’t want to…” Zhou Shuyu’s words were interrupted by Song Qi.
“How about I sleep with you tonight?” Song Qi said.
“I want to see if I can accept sleeping with someone else next to me.”
Zhou Shuyu felt a headache coming on. The instruments had been removed long ago, and the medical team had all left in the afternoon. Now, there were only two servants, Song Qi, and herself in the house.
“Miss, you’re really a headache,” Zhou Shuyu said. It might be a side effect, but she really did have a headache.
“A lot of people say that. You’re not the first.”
Song Qi looked very pleased, narrowing her eyes as her mood brightened.
“I want to refuse.”
“Protecting your employer by the bed while they sleep is a mercenary’s job. And I’ll let you sleep on the bed.”
“Zhou, this is work.”
She wasn’t calling her “sister” anymore. Zhou Shuyu rubbed her head and didn’t argue.
“Don’t release your pheromones while I’m sleeping.”
This was Zhou Shuyu’s only request. After all, she was very aware of her own physical condition. She couldn’t withstand another stimulation from Omega pheromones. A few more times, and she might as well go to the hospital and get her scent gland removed.
“Of course.” Song Qi smoothly lifted the covers and lay down.
Zhou Shuyu had slept all day and was covered in sweat. She planned to take a shower first.
“Thank you, the bed is warmed up nicely,” Song Qi pulled the covers up to her shoulders. “And your scent, I’m very pleased with it.”
Zhou Shuyu’s movement to get out of bed paused for a moment before she continued.
Was she being flirted with?
Song Qi lay in bed without moving, her eyes shining as she stared in the direction of the bathroom.
She seemed to have found something more interesting than those boring banquets and backstabbing.
Zhou Shuyu’s pheromones also smelled very good. She would just pretend she hadn’t said what she said yesterday; she actually quite liked them.
Song Qi changed to a comfortable sleeping position that didn’t take up too much space, resting her head on her hand as she waited for Zhou Shuyu to come out.
She had never entered an alpha’s territory so directly before.
The surroundings were filled with the scent of Zhou Shuyu’s pheromones. As she had just said, she was very pleased.
Of course, she hadn’t released a single bit of her own pheromones.
She had memorized all of Zhou Shuyu’s medical reports. Song Qi even understood her body’s condition better than Zhou Shuyu herself.
Song Qi chuckled softly. She had a detailed file on everyone around her. Compared to a future marriage with an uninteresting alpha, being with Zhou Shuyu was the best choice.
Her family was very satisfied with their compatibility, and she didn’t mind it either. After all, she wasn’t a rebellious child who wanted to resist the family’s authority.
She just wanted power, and until she was capable enough, she would be a good child.
