- Chapter 35 - Too Happy to Think of Home
No sooner had Ning Anran gotten into her car than Gu Lindong tapped on her window. Gu Lindong, clearly just off work, carried an air of deep exhaustion.
“Miss Ning, you wouldn’t mind giving me a ride, would you?”
The question was obviously premeditated. Ning Anran glanced down at her phone, where the address Gu Xia had sent her was still displayed.
“Not at all.”
“But President Gu, I might not be heading back to the Gu residence right away.”
Gu Lindong opened the passenger door and settled in with practiced ease, fastening her seatbelt before chuckling lightly. “I know. My sister’s been pestering you, hasn’t she? Are you going to pick her up?”
Hearing Gu Lindong mention Gu Xia, Ning Anran didn’t deny her intention to fetch her.
“It’s not too bad. The Second Miss Gu isn’t that clingy.”
This was a complete lie to herself. While Gu Lindong might not know Ning Anran’s personality well, she certainly knew her sister’s antics.
“Now I see why my sister is always clinging to you, Miss Ning. Compared to me, her elder sister, you indulge her even more.”
Gu Lindong was slightly surprised by Ning Anran’s demeanor in front of her. She had expected Ning Anran to complain about Gu Xia’s “bad habits.”
“You flatter me, President Gu. The Second Miss Gu has been very kind to me.”
Gu Lindong hadn’t pried much into their interactions. Taking Ning Anran’s polite response at face value, she didn’t dwell on it further.
The ride passed in silence until the car stopped outside a café.
Inside, Gu Xia was still playing with the owner’s little dog, her fingers running through its fur as the warm café lights enveloped her.
From outside the glass window, it wasn’t hard to notice the many customers stealing glances at Gu Xia.
After parking and grabbing an umbrella, Ning Anran stepped out first, raindrops pattering crisply against the fabric.
She walked up to the window and tapped lightly on the glass with slender fingers.
Hearing the sound, Gu Xia instinctively looked up and was met with Ning Anran’s mesmerizing face.
Her heart skipped a beat.
Gu Xia felt like she was doomed. She hadn’t even managed to win Ning Anran over yet, and she was already falling for her!
Why did the female lead have to be so stunning?
She was practically a succubus sent to bewitch the world!
“Host, if you like her, just go for it! This world is already under the control of our Villainess Redemption System!”
“Host, you can do whatever you want—go wild!”
Gu Xia, I’m here to pick you up.
Her phone chimed. Gu Xia saw the message Ning Anran had sent from outside the window.
“Wow… that beauty outside is unreal.”
“Who’s brave enough to ask for her number?”
Whispers reached her ears, and for some reason, alarm bells rang in Gu Xia’s mind. She pocketed her phone and shoved the puppy into Gao Fei’s arms.
Ignoring the “you’re ditching us for her” looks from her two friends, Gu Xia raced to open the cafĂ© door.
In seconds, she was at Ning Anran’s side.
Her arm looped around Ning Anran’s waist, as if she wanted to cling to her entirely.
Gu Xia’s actions were, of course, driven by a tiny hint of possessiveness.
But right now, even if she acted this boldly, Ning Anran wouldn’t refuse her.
Gu Xia always felt like she was taking advantage of Ning Anran’s current helpless situation, exploiting her physical labor for free and indulging in intimate contact.
Yet she couldn’t resist the urge to cling to Ning Anran.
“It’s raining.”
“Be careful, don’t let the rain get on you.”
Ning Anran tilted the umbrella, completely shielding Gu Xia before finally relaxing.
Inside the café, Gao Fei and Yu Yingying were momentarily stunned. Yu Yingying even rubbed her eyes before pinching Gao Fei’s thigh.
Her voice trembled.
“Fei Fei, tell me… is what I’m seeing real?”
Gao Fei frowned slightly, gritting her teeth. “Yu Yingying, if you’re shocked, be shocked—why pinch my leg?”
That pinch nearly crushed her thigh!
“Oh, sorry, sorry!”
“I was just too surprised and lost control for a second… What’s with Ning Anran’s attitude?”
“That’s totally how you treat a girlfriend, right?”
Gao Fei didn’t agree with Yu Yingying’s “girlfriend” theory. She took a slow sip of coffee and commented on the scene.
“Ning Anran probably accepted Xiaxia’s gifts, so she’s being more accommodating now.”
“Letting Xiaxia get handsy.”
However, the oblivious customers behind them had a different take.
“Seriously? Both of these beauties are taken?”
“Can’t you beauties leave some for the rest of us? How are we single folks supposed to survive?”
“Yeah, I was just about to ask for their numbers.”
“Turns out they’re already spoken for.”
Through the thick glass, Gu Xia couldn’t hear the commotion inside the café.
“Alright, let’s hurry back to the car.”
Holding Ning Anran’s slender, well-defined hand, Gu Xia felt like she was the one benefiting. She wasn’t sure if this made her a pervert.
But Ning Anran’s hand felt so nice to hold—cool at first, then warming up after a while.
Like a smooth, warm piece of jade.
“Sis, what are you doing here…?!”
Just as Gu Xia was about to get into the passenger seat, she spotted the familiar face of her sister, Gu Lindong.
Oh no. Was her dear sister here to catch her and Ning Anran “cheating”?
Was she going to tear Ning Anran apart?!
Wait—there wasn’t even anything between them yet! How could it be “cheating”?
“Why can’t I be here, Xiaxia? Seems like you’re having too much fun to go home.”
The car window rolled down, and Gu Lindong’s teasing tone made Gu Xia’s ears burn.
“I… I’m not.”
“Ning Anran was off work and happened to be passing by, so I asked her to pick me up…”
Gu Xia only realized now, after her sister’s remark, just how much she had come to rely on Ning Anran these past few days—so much so that she hadn’t even noticed.
“Got it.”
Seeing Gu Xia’s pitiful expression, Gu Lindong sighed and shook her head.
Gu Xia reluctantly walked toward the back seat but turned around halfway.
Pouting, she looked at her sister.
“Sis… can’t you let me have the passenger seat?”
Her voice softened, her eyes glistening with a pleading look.
“Hey, you little brat! You’ve really grown up, haven’t you? Got some nerve now, even learning to take others’ sides!”
Gu Lindong rolled her eyes inwardly but ultimately reached to unbuckle her seatbelt.
“Here, take it all, will that satisfy you?”
She never should have gotten involved in this mess in the first place!
Now she had to watch her own sister walk away from her—what a bitter pill to swallow.
