- Chapter 36 - Disliking Butterfly-Wing Figures
Rain pattered noisily against Cheng Chen’s umbrella as he shivered in the cold night.
Biting his lip, Cheng Chen cursed himself for prioritizing looking dashing over warmth when he left home.
“Um… sir, if you’re really that cold, you could always head back early,” the security guard suggested, scratching his head in confusion.
If not for his captain’s orders not to chase this guy away, he would have already used the riot fork to haul this arrogant, clueless brat out like a rabid dog.
“Ridiculous. How could I possibly be cold?”
“I’m here to see… Gu Xia.”
At the last moment, Cheng Chen swallowed the name “Ning Anran” and replaced it with “Gu Xia.”
He knew Ning Anran was just the daughter of a maid working in the nearby villa, while Gu Xia was the true young mistress. If he wanted to gain the guards’ trust, he had to name-drop the Second Young Miss.
“Ah, you’re here to see our Second Young Miss?”
“Why don’t you come inside the guard booth to warm up?”
The security captain stepped forward, recalling how the Second Young Miss had recently been gushing about a “Brother Cheng”—likely this decent-looking man before him.
“Finally, someone with sense.”
“But I won’t be entering your guard booth.”
“Later, I’ll have you—”
Before he could finish, a familiar voice rang out from behind him, and Gu Xia’s delicate profile came into view.
“Hmm, whose dog is this?”
“Instead of crawling back to its kennel in the middle of the night, it’s out here barking nonsense?”
Rainwater slid down the Bentley’s window as Cheng Chen turned around, the dim streetlights casting a hazy glow.
Even squinting, he couldn’t make out whether there was anyone else in the driver’s seat beside Gu Xia.
“Gu Xia, what’s the meaning of this?”
“Don’t tell me you’re resorting to these tactics just to get my attention because I rejected you?”
Listening to the male lead’s shameless spiel, Gu Xia wanted to gouge her eyes out. Was there some kind of miracle eye wash that could erase all her memories from before her awakening?
Every time she thought the sunlight was warm and beautiful, she’d remember this pile of dog excrement standing in front of her!
“Me? Like you?”
“How could I ever like a pile of dog crap?”
“I’d rather like Ning Anran than you.”
“I’m outstanding, gorgeous—people lining up to pursue me stretch from this city all the way to France. Do you even make the list?”
Seated in the driver’s seat, Ning Anran tilted her head slightly at Gu Xia’s words.
Congratulations, Host. Female Lead’s Favorability +5.
Gu Lindong: “……?”
His little sister really did seem to have fallen for a woman!
This was good—a cause for celebration.
At the very least, Gu Lindong trusted Ning Anran’s character.
Echoing Gu Xia’s earlier insults toward the Cheng family’s illegitimate son, Gu Lindong wholeheartedly agreed in his heart.
Honestly, finding someone who endured his sister’s antics without complaint was like searching for a needle in a haystack.
But remembering Ning Anran’s true identity, Gu Lindong felt he should remind his sister to be a little more cautious.
If she really pushed this seemingly docile Ning Anran too far, she might end up in deep trouble.
What a headache.
She was never destined to be just an elder sister—she was fated to play both father and mother roles. Gu Xia was nothing but a leaky little padded jacket to her.
Gu Lindong felt like wearing her was freezing cold, yet taking her off would risk making Gu Xia cry in front of her. She simply couldn’t stand seeing Gu Xia shed tears in her presence. The moment her little sister started crying, Gu Lindong felt like she’d give her anything she asked for.
“Gu Xia, who the hell are you calling trash?”
“Don’t you dare act all high and mighty with me—”
He took a step forward, but before he could even bare his fangs and claws to intimidate anyone, a security guard swiftly stepped in and restrained him.
“Sir, if you’re here to cause trouble for Miss Gu, then I’m afraid we’ll have to call the police immediately and have you escorted to the station for a little chat.”
Two burly security guards pinned Cheng Chen to the ground in an instant.
Cheng Chen’s face flushed red with rage, veins bulging in his neck. He had always been the school heartthrob, showered with flowers, applause, and admirers wherever he went.
When had he ever suffered such humiliation, especially in front of that b1tch Gu Xia?!
“Let go of me! Get your hands off!”
“I’ll show you what happens when you mess with the wrong person!”
“Do you even know who my father is?”
“You blind, worthless mutts—how dare you trample on my dignity like this?!”
He and Gu Xia had been at odds for far too long. The mere sight of her made Cheng Chen want to vomit for miles, with an added urge to take a diarrhea-inducing trip to the bathroom.
If Gu Xia hadn’t constantly bullied Ning Anran, he might’ve even given her a decent look—maybe allowed her to hand him a bottle of water during basketball practice.
“Who’s your dad, huh?”
“Cheng Chen, you really dare to say it out loud?”
“Aren’t you afraid your big brother will skin you alive for this?”
Gu Xia opened the car door, her foot barely touching the ground when Ning Anran appeared before her, holding an umbrella. Her slender, elegant fingers gripped the handle, tilting it slightly toward Gu Xia.
“I… I…”
The words stuck in his throat, swallowed back repeatedly.
Cheng Chen had just impulsively blurted out his father’s true identity, but the cold rain snapping him back to reality made him realize his reckless slip-up in front of so many people!
“What ‘I’? If I see you again—”
“Don’t blame me for being ruthless.”
Gu Xia bent down, her lips curling as she flashed Cheng Chen the “universal friendly gesture” and said breezily, “Also, I like guys with good bodies. You? Not my type.”
“Stop spreading rumors that I’m into you, got it?”
“Look at those twig arms of yours—they’d tremble like butterfly wings after two push-ups.”
“Me liking you? Must’ve been a curse!”
Hah. Well, she had been cursed before.
“Anran! Anran…”
“Anran… help me.”
“Gu Xia’s just a b1tch hiding behind her connections—”
Cheng Chen’s meticulously styled hair was drenched by the rain. Lifting his head, he caught sight of Ning Anran’s familiar profile and couldn’t help but call out softly.
But instead of help, what he got was Ning Anran removing her long coat and draping it gently over Gu Xia’s shoulders.
“Call the police.”
“This man has been lurking outside Miss Gu’s home, waiting for a chance to retaliate.”
“You know what to do.”
Ning Anran’s tone was icy—nothing like the way she had just been “attending” to Gu Xia.
Cheng Chen felt Ning Anran’s gaze upon him like a venomous snake coiling around his neck, its fangs dripping with poison ready to strike at any moment.
“Anran… how… how could you side with this vicious woman…”
“You don’t know what she’s done before…”
Cheng Chen stammered in disbelief, his face flushed red.
It was unclear whether he was feverish from the rain or simply seething with rage.
“I know.”
“Gu Xia has treated me well.”
At least, better than any of you.
Ning Anran carefully adjusted Gu Xia’s collar, as if afraid the warmth would escape and leave her vulnerable to the cold, rainy night.
Gu Xia had always been frail—Ning Anran had known that for a long time.
