- Chapter 48 - A Mother's Frustration with Her Daughter
On the second-floor hallway, Mrs. Gu and Gu Lindong finally managed to break away from the guests and stopped outside Gu Xia’s room.
“Mom, maybe… you shouldn’t go in just yet?”
Gu Lindong, who had seen her fair share of big scenes, tried to dissuade her. It wasn’t that her mother couldn’t handle it, but Lindong was worried her dear mother’s heart might not survive the shock.
“I barely get to come back, and I wanted to celebrate her birthday. And what does she do? She runs off to her room with some woman today.”
“Lindong, are you still covering for your sister now?”
“That girl is the daughter of the nanny next door, isn’t she?”
Of course, nothing escaped her mother’s sharp eyes. Lindong had no choice but to admit it.
“Yes… and no.”
The ambiguous answer made Mrs. Gu take a deep breath. But she knew Lindong had always been a sensible child—if there was something she needed to know, Lindong wouldn’t hide it.
“Some woman with an unknown background, and you just let your sister run wild with her?”
“I don’t care who Xiaxia dates, but… how do you expect your father and me to accept her using her power to bully someone?”
Realizing her mother was genuinely angry, Lindong sighed helplessly, rubbing her temples with two fingers. She thought back to when Gu Xia had gotten into a fight with the school bully in high school and was held back by the teacher. When Lindong went to pick her up, the teacher had said almost the exact same thing as her mother was saying now.
“Mom, I can’t control Xiaxia.”
“And neither can you.”
“At the very least… Miss Ning is a good person.”
“I can guarantee that.”
Lindong knew all too well what would happen if they tried to control Gu Xia too harshly. That day, after bringing her home from school, Lindong had made her face the wall as punishment, hoping she’d reflect on her actions.
She had even cruelly withheld food for an entire day.
But when she returned, Gu Xia was sitting on the open windowsill, a lighter in her hand—where she had gotten it, Lindong had no idea.
She looked like she was on the verge of falling.
“Mom, none of us were there to watch her grow up.”
“None of us have the right to tell Xiaxia how to live her life or how to love!”
Lindong tried to keep her tone calm, but her words betrayed her emotions.
“But you shouldn’t let her act so recklessly, bullying and forcing someone like this!”
“Mom, Ning Anran has spent more time with Xiaxia than you, Dad, or me. She… she knows what Xiaxia likes better than I do.”
The words cut both ways.
That was why Lindong had never once tried to stop Gu Xia from being “together” with Ning Anran.
“Lindong! You… I don’t even know what to say to you.”
Mrs. Gu placed her hand on the doorknob and turned it, only to find it locked from the inside.
Gu Xia had never locked her door before. This kind of behavior was clearly not something her daughter would do.
Could it be that…
At this thought, Mrs. Gu raised her arm and knocked on the door.
The crisp sound of knocking came from outside. By now, Gu Xia’s clothes had been pushed aside by Ning Anran, who was crouched on the floor, carefully applying medicine to her wounds.
The cotton swab rolled over Gu Xia’s fair skin, leaving behind a cool sensation. Gu Xia bit her thin lips, trying to suppress the trembling in her legs.
“You’ll need another application tomorrow. The bruises will fade soon.”
“Do you want me to massage it for you?”
Just using cotton swabs wouldn’t maximize the medicinal effect. Ning Anran pressed her fingers against the bruise on Gu Xia’s leg, but before she could even touch it—
Gu Xia’s hands were already resting on Ning Anran’s shoulders. At this moment, she didn’t feel like an injured patient at all.
Instead, she seemed more like a thoroughly pampered guest!
“No need… I’ll do it myself!”
“Ning Anran, go open the door.”
“My sister should be outside.”
Her voice carried a hint of pleading. Ning Anran couldn’t quite grasp Gu Xia’s thoughts, so she had no choice but to set aside her care for Gu Xia and head to the door.
The bedroom was well-heated, so Gu Xia hadn’t considered how thin Ning Anran’s white T-shirt was—until she caught sight of Ning Anran’s alluring waistline peeking through.
Panicking, her words became a jumbled mess.
No way! If her sister saw Ning Anran dressed like this, she’d probably drag her by the ear the next day, scolding her for being no different from those spoiled rich kids who only knew how to eat, drink, and sleep around!
“Ning… Anran!”
Her voice frantic, Gu Xia barely had time to adjust her own clothes before Ning Anran swung the door open.
A woman with features three or four parts similar to Gu Xia’s raised an eyebrow, sizing Ning Anran up from the top of her head down to her slender calves.
Tall, striking, with a quiet, cool demeanor—like a deep-set cedar amidst a bustling street.
Yet there was an undeniable allure about her, her slightly swollen lips hinting at something unmistakably intimate.
Shifting her gaze from Ning Anran, Gu Xia’s mother turned her attention to her disheveled daughter.
Gu Xia’s eyes were red-rimmed, her cheeks flushed, her collar barely covering anything, and her thighs completely exposed.
While Ning Anran remained composed under scrutiny, her daughter at this moment looked like…
A hopeless case!
“Mom… you’re here.”
Gu Xia straightened her skirt, biting her lip as she stared at the floor, not daring to meet her dear mother’s gaze.
If she had to describe the feeling, it was like when she’d throw tantrums as a kid, refusing dinner, only to sneak into the kitchen at midnight, stomach growling—only to get caught red-handed by her mom opening the fridge. That same “caught-in-the-act” dread!
“Xiaxia, you sure know how to enjoy yourself.”
“What’s this?”
Gu Xia blinked, confused.
“Mom, what are you talking about? I just bumped into the wall earlier—Ning Anran was helping me with the medicine!”
Her heart pounded wildly as she shot Ning Anran a frantic look, mouthing silently: “Ning Anran, run—my mom’s not someone to mess with—”
“Then how do you explain this?”
A small, delicate box was pulled from the coffee table’s hidden compartment. Under the bedroom light, Gu Xia squinted, stepping closer to see what it was.
Holy sh1t! Holy sh1t! Holy sh1t!!!
Heavens above, earth below—she didn’t buy that thing! She wasn’t that kind of lustful person, okay?! She wasn’t that desperate, okay?!
“Mom, let me explain—that… that thing…”
If she didn’t buy it, then the only other possibility was that Ning Anran did…
Sweat poured down Gu Xia’s back as she faced an impossible choice. If she admitted to her dear mother that she’d bought it, she’d never be able to clear her name even if she jumped into the Yellow River!!!
But she couldn’t possibly throw Ning Anran under the bus!
Ning Anran must have bought this stuff just to make her comfortable!!!
After all, in the original story, Ning Anran was completely straight!!!
With only 4% affection level reaching this point, Gu Xia felt moved almost to tears by Ning Anran’s actions.
“What’s wrong with this thing?”
“Xiaxia, explain to me carefully what’s wrong with this?”
The tiny words printed on the small box made Gu Xia want to disappear, as if she could already hear the product’s advertising slogan ringing in her ears.
“This… this was my purchase.”
“Ahem… safety first.”
After saying this, Gu Xia felt she might need to consider relocating to another planet.
