Episode 8: First Battle
“…Eh…!?”
“…”
Shielding Ternelica behind his shadow, Konoe scanned the room.
Stifling fumes of miasma filled the purplish haze. And several monsters remained.
They were the same giant wolf-demons—the Garum—that he’d just slain.
In the Adventurers’ Guild grading, these ranked as mid‑level. Not very precise, but enough to know their threat level.
They growled warily, eyes locked on Konoe. They slowly retreated—yet one of them had a living captive at its feet.
Konoe stepped forward. In an instant, he sprinted across the room to the doorway. And all the Garum bashed against his path exploded outward, leaving only marks on the stone walls.
“—You, stay in this room.”
“Y‑yes,”
Ternelica stammered. Konoe cast healing magic on the survivor inside. He then dashed into the corridor—
The hallway was piled with corpses and monsters feasting on them.
(…So the city barrier’s been completely broken.)
Knocking creatures to death with a single punch, Konoe sighed. The city’s protective ward had failed—openly invaded. It was even up to the teleport gate. The castle, once a final refuge, was now overrun.
(…This might be over.)
The miasma density inside was dangerously high—strong enough to cause terminal disease in under a day, even with medicine. He feared almost no one could survive.
“—Hm?”
Detecting movement deeper within the castle, he realized people had evacuated—thousands.
(Could this be the evacuation succeeding?)
Beyond the throne room doors, monsters and people clashed.
Konoe braced himself. He wiped the remaining monsters near the teleport gate, then raced toward the throne room.
Throughout the castle, he crushed every creature blocking his path—Orc, Goblins, Garums, Harpies, Giant Rats, Armored Specters, Ghosts, Vampires—nothing escaped.
Moments later, he burst into the throne room—a final line of defense. If broken, survival was impossible. Before him, towering Trolls advanced.
A single knight, bloodied, was missing an arm and a leg. He was dying of miasma. Yet he brandished his sword and snarled,
“You shall not pass!”
A Troll reached to crush the man.
Konoe acted—magnifying his life magic, he obliterated the monster utterly. He left not a shred of matter.
Turning to the wounded knight, he cast potent healing magic and reinforced the massive gateway behind them—enough healing power to help a thousand people, he hoped.
“I’ll begin door-to-door healing once the cleanup is done. Get ready.”
Confirming the knight’s limbs regrew, Konoe leaped through a window and burst into the open courtyard.
He had purged the teleport gate and throne room area—but something remained.
(…Three remain.)
Three disaster‑class monsters had originally besieged the city—they were the leaders controlling the diverse creatures. One remained—the others unseen—enough to recognize their presence and power the moment he stepped outside.
Ahead stood a hundred-meter tall giant: Hecatoncheires, the hundred-armed titan!
Under the toxic sky, it swung a gargantuan fist aimed at the castle—and at Konoe. If it struck, the castle—and he—would crumble.
These monsters were intelligent and had noticed Konoe’s rescue efforts. They targeted him and those he protected.
As its punch descended, Konoe summoned his final trump card:
“–Manifest.”
Light flowed from every pore. It condensed in his right hand into the Holy Cross Spear “Utsuro no Yari”, a divine weapon unique to each Adept. It glowed white—the same color as his god’s winged cross.
The spear crackled with holy lightning, and Konoe swung it—a blinding flash of light erupted. It wiped the Hecatoncheires from existence. He kneeled, dust settling—
But he couldn’t rest. He had sensed the air above—two remaining disaster‑class Dragons. When Hecatoncheires acted as a lure, they watched. The Dragons were wind‑element, capable of reaching Mach 3 speed and deadly from above.
They’d held back until now.
But now they were preparing to strike—and Konoe realized their gravest oversight:
They are attacking an Adept.
Will the Dragons notice in time?
Within a moment shorter than one hundredth of a second――Konoe and the Dragon’s eyes had certainly met.
Konoe, with his arm still swung through, leapt.
He jumped high. And he trampled the air with magic. Using that foot as an axis, he spun his body――
“――――!!”
Konoe’s spinning kick slammed into the Dragon.
It pierced through both the Dragon’s barrier and its scales, completely shattering its body.
――The Wind Dragon, without even realizing it had been defeated, was blown outside the city and fell into the forest.
“……”
Konoe landed. And he looked at the sky.
Several kilometers ahead of his gaze was the last of the three—the remaining Dragon.
That Dragon, for a moment, did not move and stayed in place… then, perhaps noticing Konoe’s gaze, turned and flew away.
“…Too far, huh.”
Konoe thought for a moment. He then decided not to chase.
There was something more important to do first.
Konoe entered the castle.
To sweep up the remaining monsters, and to carry out healing.
Perhaps as a result of the healing magic he had blasted out—
Signs of people had begun to stir from the direction of the audience chamber.
