- Episode 24 - The Fall of the Saintess of Kotokoris
The downfall of the Saintess of Kotokoris spread like wildfire across the lands. Given that her reputation had never been particularly good to begin with, the story traveled far and wide as an utterly disgraceful scandal.
“The Saintess of Kotokoris stole the power of her real saintess sister, pretending to be the saintess herself and indulging in endless selfish whims.
Her family—the Baron of Kotokoris and the Baroness—acted with arrogance even toward the Emperor himself, who could not risk offending the so-called saintess for the sake of protecting the empire.
And if that wasn’t enough, they went so far as to formally disown the real saintess of the Finable Empire and cast her out of their house.
The Baron of Kotokoris and his family are the worst of the worst.”
“Wow, they really didn’t hold back.”
I murmured absentmindedly as I sipped my coffee on my favorite terrace at the Ainakura Duke’s estate.
Having finished my saintess duties in Melt, I was now taking my usual rest at the Ainakura Duke’s residence, reading the newspaper. It was written all over the front page, but honestly, it felt like someone else’s problem.
Well, technically, it was someone else’s problem now.
“It’s no surprise. Your former sister had quite the difficult personality. It’s only natural for her to be spoken of this way.”
Sitting across from me was Lord Rein.
Since today was his day off, he was spending the morning with me.
Father had openly demanded additional rewards and acted condescendingly toward both high-ranking nobles and even the Emperor. But Emil’s selfishness was of a different nature.
She believed that receiving special treatment was her birthright. If she wasn’t treated as special, she would sulk and cry. And once she cried, she would stop performing her saintess duties.
Those who needed the saintess’s power had no choice but to cater to Emil’s every whim, ensuring that she never became upset.
They had to say the words she wanted to hear, give her the gifts she desired, and prepare an environment that met her every comfort. She had to be treated as the most precious princess in the world.
“I heard even her meal preferences were overly demanding. Everyone was exhausted dealing with her. In contrast, Yuna never complains about anything.”
Why was she demanding such extravagant hospitality in lands that were in dire need of the saintess’s help? Did she even understand that we were there to help them?
As news of the Saintess of Kotokoris’s downfall spread, so too did rumors of me—the Saintess of the Finable Empire.
“The Saintess of the Finable Empire is a true saintess, capable of reviving the very earth simply by walking upon it. She is kind and considerate to all, accepting even dirt-covered vegetables with gratitude.
Unlike the Saintess of Kotokoris, she is a genuine saintess—pure-hearted, beautiful, and deserving of her title.”
“…This level of praise is honestly embarrassing.”
Reading such exaggerated compliments about myself in the newspaper made me feel self-conscious.
Is this really okay? Aren’t they overhyping me? What if people are disappointed when they meet me in person?
“I don’t think any of it is untrue.”
Really?
I feel like my reputation is soaring simply because the previous saintess, Emil, was so terrible.
I’ve read historical records of past saintesses, and they all saved lands just as I do. There’s nothing exceptional about me.
“A true saintess is supposed to be praised unconditionally. Your former sister and the Baron of Kotokoris were the anomalies.”
Rein spoke with a disgusted tone, making me glance down at the newspaper once more.
“The Saintess of Kotokoris was a pathological liar who falsely painted the Saintess of the Finable Empire as a villain.”
With her title stripped away, Emil and Father’s reputations plummeted instantly.
Before, they had been tolerated simply because Emil was believed to be the only saintess. But the moment the truth came to light—that she was an imposter—their past actions were laid bare for all to see.
The Kotokoris family was now embroiled in utter chaos, with even their own people turning against them.
“This is all their own doing.”
That was the only conclusion I could come to.
I had always known what would happen to them if I proved that Emil was a fake and that I was the real saintess.
But they had allowed themselves to be consumed by greed, drunk on the power of the saintess. They deserved this outcome.
“I hear the noble families that had been financially supporting the Kotokoris Baron household are now withdrawing their aid.”
“Including Duke Luki’s… the Shainacle Marquis family?”
“The Shainacle family was one of the first to cut ties with them. Though, it seems Luki still hasn’t divorced his wife yet.”
“I see.”
That was unexpected. Given the circumstances, I thought Luki would divorce Emil immediately.
Luki had abandoned Emil in Melt, choosing to return not to the Kotokoris estate, but to his own family’s home at the Shainacle Marquis estate.
Even though he had spent years living in the Kotokoris territory after marrying Emil, he suddenly left—leaving his wife behind.
It was obvious.
Luki had lost all interest in Emil.
I had known this would happen.
Even so, it was painfully clear that the “love” for which he had abandoned me had been nothing more than a façade—just another deception built upon Emil’s stolen power.
To be discarded by the very husband who once claimed to love her…
Poor Emil.
