- Episode 27 - Lord Luki’s Younger Brother
“Viscount Goruiko’s son, I will not allow you to trouble Yuna any further. Do you have the courage to make an enemy of me?”
“Hii!”
Rein-sama always shows me a gentle expression, but when he recognizes someone as an enemy, his face turns cold as ice.
“I-I sincerely apologize! Excuse me!”
Viscount Goruiko’s son fled like a startled rabbit. Please, just never show your face again.
“Thank you, Rein-sama.”
“You’re welcome.”
I truly believe I made the right choice in selecting Rein-sama as my partner.
As the son of Duke Ainakura and the most exceptional magic knight, Rein-sama being my partner has kept most people from trying to court me or force me into a dance—aside from Viscount Goruiko’s son, that is.
I’m sure some of them genuinely like me, but right now, I’m not looking for romance.
…But why did Rein-sama choose me as his partner?
“Haha, so even you can make that kind of face, Rein.”
“!?”
Who is this?
A man who had been watching the exchange clapped his hands and approached us.
“What kind of face?”
“A very human one. Normally, you wouldn’t bother dealing with small fry like them, would you, Rein?”
Small fry…? He seems quite familiar with Rein-sama…
Noticing my gaze, the man smiled and bowed his head.
“A pleasure to meet you, Lady Yuna. I am Mimosa Shinacle. I’ve known Rein since our school days, and we are quite close.”
“…Shinacle?”
That name sounds familiar.
“Mimosa is one of the sons of Marquis Shinacle and Luki’s younger brother.”
“I hope we can get along, Lady Yuna.”
—Marquis Shinacle? Luki-sama’s younger brother!? A friend of Rein-sama!?
I know that Luki-sama has a poor relationship with his siblings.
He has two younger brothers, both highly talented, making them a threat to his inheritance of the Shinacle family title.
“Lady Yuna, I sincerely apologize for the many offenses my brother has committed against you. I am truly sorry.”
“N-No! It’s not your fault!”
“That is very kind of you to say.”
He does resemble Luki-sama a little, but his demeanor is completely different.
“Is the Marquis of Shinacle here?”
“Yes, my father will be arriving soon, along with Luki-sama, to greet you.”
Marquis Shinacle… Luki-sama’s father.
Even though I was once Luki-sama’s fiancée, I’ve never met his parents or siblings, including Mimosa-sama.
From the very beginning, Luki-sama had no interest in me. He probably made sure I never met his family on purpose.
“…So I have to see Luki-sama again.”
I muttered unconsciously.
Mimosa-sama widened his eyes in surprise.
Oh no. I spoke my mind without thinking…
“Haha. I see, Lady Yuna truly dislikes my brother.”
“?”
I had practically admitted how much I dreaded seeing his brother, yet Mimosa-sama wasn’t angry—he even laughed.
“My apologies. In truth, I only recently learned about the disgraceful way my brother treated you during your engagement.”
“You didn’t know…? Do you mean the annulment?”
“Yes. My father and I were told by my brother that the engagement was broken off because of you, Lady Yuna.”
“Because of me?”
“He claimed that from the start, he was meant to marry Lady Emil, but you forcibly stole the position of fiancée from her.”
“—Huh?”
A year after our engagement, when I went to greet the Shinacle family for the marriage… the one standing beside Luki wasn’t me, but Emil.
With tears in their eyes, they told a tragic tale: that I had fallen in love with Luki, stolen Emil’s rightful place, and forced my way into an engagement.
“‘After two long years, I was finally able to annul my engagement with Yuna and bring my true fiancée here.’ That was the joyful report my brother gave us.”
What is this…? That’s a complete lie.
“I never did any of that! My engagement was arranged by my father! And the one who stole my fiancé and married him was Emil!”
They made up a story to protect themselves, putting all the blame on me.
“Yes, I heard everything from Rein. It was wrong of us to believe my brother so easily. We should have realized the truth much sooner. I sincerely apologize for the delay in making amends, Lady Yuna.”
Mimosa-sama bowed deeply.
But it wasn’t his fault. The ones truly at fault were Luki-sama and Emil, who spread those lies. And their parents, who supported the deception.
If everyone except me testified in their favor, it’s understandable that people would believe them.
“Do you believe me now?”
“Of course. My brother and the others had no proof that you stole anything. In contrast, the Holy Maiden of the Finable Empire herself speaks on your behalf. Naturally, we trust you.”
I’m relieved… but I’m also furious.
They twisted the truth just because I couldn’t fight back.
How cruel.
They never cared about me at all, did they?
