- Episode 38 - Before the Reunion – Emil’s Feelings
The Kotokoris territory was a remote land, unnoticed and ignored by many. The land was barren, and the harvests were poor. However, ever since the twin daughters of the Kotokoris baronial family were born, the once infertile land began yielding abundant harvests.
Rumors of a saint began to spread, and Emil, the younger of the twin sisters, was exalted as the saint.
Emil became known as the “Saint of Kotokoris” and was deeply loved and spoiled by the people, who had long suffered in the remote region. She was cherished so much that it became natural for her to expect such treatment.
“Luki-sama!”
“…Emil, what’s wrong?”
At the Kotokoris Baron’s residence, Emil burst into the couple’s room, which had been prepared for her and Luki, and flung herself into his chest with full force.
“Listen to me! Father is so cruel! He didn’t tell me that Yuna-neesama has returned!”
Just as Yuna had predicted, Baron Kotokoris had deliberately kept Emil in the dark about her elder sister’s visit to the territory.
“Tch, so Father-in-law told you after all.”
“Luki-sama?”
“…Emil, right now, you’ve lost your saintly powers.”
Luki gently ran his fingers through Emil’s hair, stroking it softly as if soothing a child, speaking to her in a tender tone.
“The land is withering now, and we have no choice but to rely on Yuna’s power. That’s why Father-in-law swallowed his pride and asked Yuna for help.”
Since the land first began to wither, Luki had advised Baron Kotokoris to seek Yuna’s help. However, the baron had adamantly refused, saying, “Asking that failure of a daughter for help would mean admitting that she is the real saint!”
Now, without Yuna, the Kotokoris territory was visibly deteriorating. Even as the land crumbled, the baron had stubbornly refused to seek Yuna’s aid—until things became dire.
To be honest, Luki didn’t care what happened to Kotokoris territory. But after being driven out of the Shainacle Marquis household by Mimosa, he had no choice but to take refuge with his temporary wife, Emil. While he was here, he couldn’t afford for the land to rot away completely.
That was why he had suggested to his father-in-law that they keep Yuna’s visit a secret from Emil. If Emil found out, she would surely cause another outburst.
“No, it’s not an official request. Yuna-neesama came back for me!”
Just as Luki expected, Emil was thrilled about Yuna’s return.
She genuinely believed that Yuna had finally come back to Kotokoris just for her, that her beloved sister had returned to being her Yuna, solely devoted to her.
“…Emil, it’s admirable that you care for your sister, but don’t you think Yuna has changed? She openly exposed you as a fake saint.”
“That was just Yuna-oneesama being mean. I already told you, didn’t I, Luki-sama? Yuna-oneesama has always been jealous of me and falsely claimed to be the real saint out of spite.”
I told Yuna-oneesama that it was best for our family—for me—to be the saint, yet she kept trying to cause trouble by making false claims.
Back then, she couldn’t prove her saintly powers, so it always ended there. But I never imagined that she would one day be able to control her powers.
How cruel of Yuna-oneesama. Even if she has now mastered her saintly abilities, she should have continued letting me be the saint—for my sake, for our family’s sake.
And yet, she went as far as publicly denouncing me as a fake.
An elder sister should always support her younger sibling. She’s such a cruel sister. But still, I will forgive Yuna-oneesama—because I love her.
“Jealousy, huh? So Yuna has always been claiming she was the real saint instead of you?”
“Yes, she’s such a troublesome sister.”
“…Damn it. Could it be that Yuna was the real saint all along?! If I had known, I wouldn’t have annulled our engagement—!”
“Luki-sama?”
Emil couldn’t quite catch Luki’s muttered words.
“…Never mind. More importantly, Emil, weren’t you supposed to fulfill a healing request today?”
“I ignored it.”
“You ignored it?! Wasn’t today’s request from the daughter of a prominent merchant in the region?!”
“Yes, but when I heard that Yuna-oneesama was here, I couldn’t sit still. Besides, those people didn’t even treat me with the respect I deserve. In the end, they even shouted ‘You’re a fake saint!’ at me! How terrible!”
Despite being labeled as a fake saint, people still sought Emil out for her miraculous healing magic.
“You idiot…! They were one of our most generous clients, offering a hefty reward! And you just ignored them—?!”
“What’s the matter, Luki-sama?”
