Chapter 3: Mango Pomelo Sago. Ming Xi is Kicked Out
The flame on the stove, like a circle of small blue teeth, cheered and danced before gradually extinguishing with the turn of the knob. The warm yellow light of the kitchen fell upon Xia Jinzhao’s shoulder, creating a small vacuum separating them from the darkness of the living room.
A strange atmosphere flowed between the two. Knowing that this was not the place to stay, Lin Cheng’an briefly said goodbye to Xia Jinzhao. Before leaving, she cast a long, meaningful look at Ming Xi.
How to describe that look? Disgust mixed with a hint of schadenfreude, as if anticipating a show about to begin.
Ming Xi, who had been secretly pleased with her current situation, became uneasy again. Although she hadn’t had much direct contact with Xia Jinzhao, she knew the person in front of her was two-faced and certainly wouldn’t be genuinely kind.
“Talk, talk about what…” she stammered, afraid to meet Xia Jinzhao’s eyes.
The turbulent airflow at the entrance door returned to silence, and that rich, bitter aftertaste surged forward. Her nose felt itchy. Out of decency, she didn’t reach up to scratch it, but her features were tightly furrowed, secretly expressing her dissatisfaction with Xia Jinzhao.
“What do you think I’d talk about with you?” Compared to her tension, the woman’s posture was lazy. “You treated me that way just now. Have you considered the consequences?”
In contrast to the true colors revealed under the influence of the drug earlier, Xia Jinzhao’s attitude was hazy, swaying like the two ends of a balance scale. Even though Ming Xi felt there might be room for maneuver, she worried that the other party was thinking of ten thousand ways to torment her to death.
The person in front of me is clearly a big demon with a cold face and an even colder heart! Ming Xi, what kind of wishful thinking are you clinging to!
“Ahem,” Ming Xi cleared her throat, her eyes drifting. “Well, actually, this is a misunderstanding. The one who drugged you was my twin sister…”
She leaned toward the counter’s edge. The cold porcelain tile pressed against her palm, making her shiver. This kind of excuse, created by a battle between her left and right brain, was clearly unconvincing. In a serious situation, it felt like an attempt to evade the topic, which was irritating.
Sure enough, upon hearing this excuse, Xia Jinzhao’s eyes darkened. She then paced slowly forward, gradually cornering Ming Xi.
Despite the negligible difference in their heights, the woman’s aura was still suffocating. When the Omega’s pheromones enveloped her senses, an alarm bell immediately rang in Ming Xi’s mind.
However, it was too late. Xia Jinzhao had somehow reached her neck. The cool pads of her fingers met Ming Xi’s scorching skin, instantly evaporating like cold water dropped into lava.
The grip on her neck tightened. Air became thin in her lungs. Ming Xi instinctively tried to break free, but the woman sneered close to her ear.
“If I hadn’t been prepared, Ming Xi, how were you planning to torment me tonight?”
The woman’s breath was like a venomous snake flicking its tongue. As her knuckles slowly closed, Ming Xi realized that Xia Jinzhao actually possessed such strength. Between the two of them, the other party clearly held the dominant position.
Help! It hurts so much…
“Let… go…” Ming Xi spoke in broken gasps. But this sentence seemed to be the fuse that immediately ignited Xia Jinzhao’s accumulated anger.
The soft cartilage in her throat was pressed. The woman quietly enjoyed her expression. No matter how the latter pleaded or struggled, she was no different from prey in a cage.
All her strength rushed backward to her head. After uttering two meaningless syllables, Ming Xi’s face twisted in pain, her vision gradually losing focus.
The last thing she saw before death was the moon-like ceiling lamp in the kitchen, illuminating the indifference and grimness in Xia Jinzhao’s eyes.
“The End of the Book”
Okay, the above was just Ming Xi’s imagination. As the female lead of this book, how could she kick the bucket so quickly!
When the woman’s thumb intentionally or unintentionally brushed against her flat Adam’s apple, Ming Xi instinctively swallowed hard: “Miss Xia, I was momentarily possessed… If you are willing to give me a chance to reform, I will serve you like an ox or a horse!”
The toadying skills she had mastered in the workplace came in handy at this moment. She wished she could drag the original host out of her coffin and beat her into a pig’s head!
Look at the stupid things you, this bringer of trouble, did! You don’t live in peace, and you have to drag someone down with you even in death!
“No,” Xia Jinzhao replied calmly, her tone willful.
Ming Xi: What the heck? Is this the time for flirting?!
Taking in her reaction, Xia Jinzhao suddenly felt it was utterly pointless. Yet, due to the constraints of the Xia family, she couldn’t harm the person in front of her at all, otherwise…
However, there was plenty of time. Divorce and sending this malicious and vain woman to the police station was too easy on her.
But the events of tonight reminded her that keeping her nearby was a hidden danger.
“I will figure out a way to deal with the Xia family. You move out of my house tomorrow.”
After dropping that sentence, the oppressive pressure completely dissipated, allowing Ming Xi to breathe.
Her vision was clear and bright again. Xia Jinzhao stepped back half a pace, then turned, her figure disappearing into the diluted darkness.
Ming Xi remained stunned in place, unable to collect herself for a long time.
That’s it? She thought Xia Jinzhao would lay down ground rules and conditions, or simply have her arrested right away.
Speaking of which, the female lead in the book was almost subjected to inhuman abuse, yet the handling of the original host was surprisingly lenient, largely due to the constraints from the Xia family.
After all, three years of non-consummation was indeed absurd to mention publicly.
She dared not get carried away, having secured a moment of respite in the interim. She made do with spending the night in the residence, and the next morning, while the owner was asleep, Ming Xi packed her luggage, ready to wander.
Although she had lived here for three years, there weren’t many items that truly belonged to the original host. Dragging a thirty-inch black suitcase, she stood at the front desk of a chain hotel and quickly completed the check-in procedures.
She had assumed the original host was a minor internet celebrity, at least a rich woman with some savings. However, looking at the four-digit balance in the card, Ming Xi was dumbfounded.
Is this… is this reasonable? Four thousand yuan is just a drop in the bucket for the sky-high cost of living in City S!
But thinking about it, it made sense. The original host had so many shady friends, she probably spent all her earnings on leisure.
Unfortunately, there were no cheap rental areas nearby. Two thousand yuan for a deposit and one month’s rent upfront was clearly not enough. Hearing the poverty-stricken jingle of her non-existent coins, Ming Xi sighed heavily.
No matter where she went, she had to rely on her own hands to get rich.
She swiped her key card. Following the “beep” of the lock, the hotel’s unique scent entered her nostrils. Ming Xi first put her clothes into the cabinet, changed into comfortable home wear, and lay down on the bed.
After half a day of running around, her heels were still sore. In the room, sunlight shone through the window onto the wooden desk. The floor wasn’t high. The trees, not yet shedding their leaves in autumn, retained the rich green of late summer, their leaves swaying in the wind and tapping against the glass.
Everything that had happened since last night felt like a dream. Just before drifting off to sleep, Ming Xi thought:
How wonderful it would be if I woke up in my own warm little home.
In reality, she didn’t.
After waking up, she looked at the pillow marks on her face in the mirror, washed her face, and decided to take a day off today. Her current goal was not only to find a stable place to live but also to handle her relationship with the female lead.
Facing the Xia family, the two were bound together, making divorce unlikely. She either had to court death by dancing on all of Xia Jinzhao’s nerves until the latter lost patience and kicked her out, or she had to work hard to please and win her over, changing her impression for a peaceful parting.
Hmm, based on that person’s temper, Ming Xi resolutely chose the latter.
Please, Xia Jinzhao is the Daughter of Fortune in this world! What is wrong with people who would want to oppose her instead of clinging tightly to her coattails?
With a preliminary plan set, Ming Xi was about to go downstairs to the convenience store to buy some bread, when her phone signaled a WeChat notification.
Xia Jinzhao!
Her eyes lit up, and she immediately pounced on the bedside table. However, seeing the sender’s contact name, her enthusiasm was instantly doused with cold water.
Gou Dongxi was one of the original host’s shady friends, a group of people who often gathered in bars, nightclubs, and other places of pleasure. Their usual meetups were just for meals, clubbing, discussing trivial topics, or scheming about which Omega or Beta was naive enough to be manipulated.
To get closer to Xia Jinzhao, she absolutely could not associate with these trash friends anymore.
Gou Dongxi: “Where are you making your fortune recently, Boss Ming [finger hook emoji]”
Ming Xi: Go to hell!
Just as she was about to close her phone, a second message arrived promptly.
Gou Dongxi: “We’re hanging out at Charm Bar. Why don’t you join us? It’s my treat today”
Gou Dongxi: “[Location Pin]”
Looking at the four words, “It’s my treat today,” Ming Xi swallowed hard. Her empty stomach timely protested, seemingly urging her to make a choice.
She hadn’t had a hot meal since that bland, meatless vegetarian noodle soup last night. Checking her bank balance, Ming Xi almost burned a hole in her remaining three-digit savings with her gaze.
Ming Xi: “On my way!”
Closing her phone, she took a deep breath and let out a wicked laugh.
Anyway, there would be no chance of meeting them in the future. She would go tonight to freeload a meal and extort some money while she was at it. As half a member of the Xia family, even if she owed these people a pile of debt, they wouldn’t dare demand it back.
Oh-ho-ho, I’m a genius!
Charm Bar was located in the most prosperous commercial district of City S. Skyscrapers lined the riverbank, and the other side of the river was a bustling night market. Now, the dazzling neon lights were cast onto the river surface, bit by bit shattering the moon’s reflection.
Ming Xi walked out of the high-speed rail station. After showing her ID, she was granted entry. Unlike the cool comfort outside, the light in Charm Bar was hazy and dim. The air was mixed with a sticky, syrup-like perfume.
And there were Alphas and Omegas who deliberately released pheromones for flirtation, hugging and kissing on the dance floor.
From afar, she heard someone calling out to her from a corner sofa. Following the sound, she saw a man stand up.
That must be Gou Dongxi.
Ming Xi lifted her foot, but suddenly felt a sharp gaze. She abruptly turned her head but found everyone around was having fun, with no one paying attention to her.
“Ayo, Boss Ming, why are you standing there?” Gou Dongxi walked up and put his arm around her shoulder.
He had a hoodlum-like dyed yellow hair. His breath smelled of betel nut when he spoke, and he was dressed in a “non-mainstream” style. Seeing the man being so overly familiar, Ming Xi’s hair stood on end. Suppressing the urge to swear, she slapped his restless hand away.
Go away!
For the money to maintain her captivating charm, for the delicious dinner, she endured.
“Alright, sit down quickly.” Gou Dongxi, whose face was dismissed, didn’t get angry, but chuckled, pulled up his trousers, and sat on the innermost seat.
Ming Xi took a long time to brace herself psychologically before reluctantly settling on the edge of the sofa, forced to join this group of loafers.
On the booth not far from her, a concealed camera clicked its shutter.
