Chapter 43: Sweet Egg Custard: And To Share A… Bed…
Ming Xi racked her brain, recalling the interaction between the original self and Xia Jinzhao described in the book. The two were not close; even in front of the elders, they rarely showed an intimate, loving relationship, mostly treating each other with polite respect. But since they were in the Xia family mansion, they had to put on a show. Especially tonight, their state was unusual, which might raise suspicion even to outsiders.
She definitely couldn’t sleep in a separate room.
Ming Xi pretended to pack her things in the living room, but her mind was entirely on the bedroom. The warm, yellow light bled at the intersection of the rooms, making it cozy and inviting. She carefully knocked on the door and, after receiving permission, poked half her head in.
Xia Jinzhao’s room was dimly lit. The curtains were not completely closed, allowing the rustling rain scene to be reflected on the glass. The woman was sitting up in bed, texting someone. She looked up when she heard the movement.
“If you feel unwell in the middle of the night, be sure to tell me,” Ming Xi was extremely considerate.
“I’m fine.” Xia Jinzhao rubbed the bridge of her nose, helpless about Ming Xi’s nagging.
“Alright, then you rest first.”
Ming Xi clung to the doorframe, like a koala observing its surroundings, not letting any of Xia Jinzhao’s expressions slip by. As her words fell, the woman sat up further and moved towards the side of the bed. This subtle action naturally left a space on the wide bed. Ming Xi, who was worrying about how to adhere to the “usual arrangement,” suddenly brightened up.
No way? During those days of dealing with Grandma Xia, the original self actually slept in the same bed as Xia Jinzhao! She simultaneously marveled at her own insightful observation and felt heartache for the protagonist’s love story. Right under the Xia family’s noses, the ill-intentioned original self took advantage of Xia Jinzhao countless times!
How hateful! Ming Xi gnashed her teeth, almost digging her nails into the door to vent her displeasure. However, what was more frustrating was the realization that she had to sleep with Xia Jinzhao tonight.
No, no, no. Isn’t this undermining Song Yu? While she was tormented by her inner struggle, the woman on the bed turned off her phone and asked curiously: “Is there anything else?”
Seeing Xia Jinzhao start to urge her, the die was cast. Ming Xi could only shuffle along the wall, silently reciting many apologies in her heart.
The bedside lamp dimmed, revealing the woman’s tired and haggard face. After being caught in the rain, she looked like an animal whose fur had been soaked and smoothed, docilely nestled in her lair, giving the illusion that her defenses had been breached.
Xia Jinzhao moved to the edge of the bed and pulled out the cord to charge her phone, suddenly feeling the mattress next to her sag. Immediately, an unfamiliar, rich scent wafted around her nose.
Ming Xi curled up on the edge of the bed. Although she was conflicted, once she lay down beside Xia Jinzhao, all her troubles vanished. It really is a high-quality bed. It feels so solid and safe to sleep in. Rich people sure know how to enjoy life!
The fluffy duvet was like freshly baked bread, emitting a fragrant smell, along with Xia Jinzhao’s unique pheromone scent that lingered within. This realization made Ming Xi secretly blush. Then, Song Yu’s name flashed in her mind, and she quickly dispelled all the messy thoughts.
A friend’s wife is not to be bullied.
“Ming Xi.” In the darkness, Xia Jinzhao called her name.
“Yes, I’m here.”
Ming Xi, whose name was called, shuddered, nearly rolling off the bed. She turned on her side, catching the woman’s silhouette sitting at the head of the bed in her peripheral vision.
“…”
Unfortunately, after listening for a long time, she didn’t hear the rest of Xia Jinzhao’s sentence. Ming Xi wasn’t sure if she was uncomfortable. She turned her entire body around, intending to turn on the light to check.
Her wrist was seized.
Their breathing rose and fell, like a thin sheet of paper fluttering between them. A surging heat came from the point of contact. Xia Jinzhao’s body temperature was slightly higher than Ming Xi’s.
“What’s wrong?” Ming Xi asked cautiously, like a startled rabbit.
Her answer was a long sigh. The force on her wrist suddenly loosened. As the duvet shifted, Xia Jinzhao sighed. “Go to sleep.”
“Are you uncomfortable?” Seeing her hesitate to speak, Ming Xi asked.
“A little.”
“Where does it hurt? Should I call someone to check?” Ming Xi made a move to get out of bed. Her clothes were tugged back.
“I’m uncomfortable in my heart.”
“Why?”
“The bed has been defiled.”
Hearing these words from Xia Jinzhao was childish and cute. It was unlike her usual quiet and aloof self, who would typically glance at Ming Xi, kick her off the bed, and domineeringly tell her to scram.
This sentence hit Ming Xi like a thunderbolt, leaving her stunned. She stared blankly at Xia Jinzhao’s face, her lips parting and closing, unable to utter a single word. So what exactly was the “usual arrangement”? Would sleeping under a bridge work?
“Then I… then I…” Her linguistic system was completely messed up.
Just as she was about to crawl out of the duvet, an arm reached over her waist, completely confining Ming Xi to the bed.
“Quite the nerve. Come and go as you please.”
Xia Jinzhao spoke faintly. In the dim light, her eyes were bright, brimming with a hint of a smile. If the light were on, Ming Xi would definitely be able to sense the teasing, but she was flustered, only thinking about how to construct a lie that wouldn’t reveal her true intentions.
Xia Jinzhao, however, misunderstood Ming Xi’s meaning, thinking she was showing weakness and apologizing for the afternoon’s incident. With both of them making concessions, the pent-up tension between them naturally dissipated. Seeing Ming Xi scratching her ears and cheeks, looking like she’d been caught red-handed, Xia Jinzhao’s heart instantly softened, becoming like a molten center, flowing from the inside out.
Unwilling to see the person in front of her embarrassed, she softened her tone, a hint of indulgence in her voice.
“Forget it. I won’t tease you anymore.”
