The Scumbag Alpha's Redemption in a Sweet Romance - Chapter 21
Chapter 21
As Ning Chun injected the pheromones, she felt the person in her arms go limp. Yan Hua leaned against her, only able to breathe. After the intense excitement, a silent exhaustion set in, and Ning Chun closed her eyes, falling asleep almost instantly.
It was 3:30 AM. The golden clock downstairs continued its precise, unwavering march.
Ning Chun sat up in bed, clutching her neck. Her neck ached, and so did her back. Her stomach was completely empty, making her desperately want to go downstairs to find something to eat.
The villa was silent in the middle of the night. Even the garden lights were just right, not too bright but with a touch of warmth.
Ning Chun walked into the kitchen alone. She looked around but found nothing ready to eat. She opened the refrigerator. Besides an unopened carton of milk, there were only some pre-cut vegetables and raw steak.
This was Ning Chun’s first time in her own kitchen. Daily meals were prepared by a special chef, always fresh and never left overnight.
Ning Chun thought for a moment and reached for a box of baby carrots. These could be eaten directly.
The double-door refrigerator was wide open, blocking her upper body, so only her two slender legs were visible, swaying gently.
Ning Chun bit off a piece of carrot, chewing it with her teeth. It was crunchy but didn’t have much of a special flavor.
She continued to search the fridge until a hand reached over her shoulder and grabbed her hand.
Ning Chun shivered in fright. She looked closely and saw that Yan Hua had appeared behind her without her noticing.
“Why do you walk so quietly? You scared me to death,” she said, clutching her chest with a look of lingering fear. She took out the carton of cold milk, ready to drink it.
“I called you twice, but you didn’t respond,” Yan Hua said, watching her movements and guessing she wanted to drink cold milk.
Ning Chun had her back to Yan Hua, hesitating whether to take out the water celery to eat as well.
The milk was taken from her arms, and Ning Chun reached for it, but her hand was swatted away.
She looked at Yan Hua with a bit of resentment. Her stomach was truly empty; she just wanted something to eat.
Yan Hua led her to the living room, leaving her with only the box of mini carrots.
Ning Chun huddled on the sofa with her head down, clutching the small box of carrots, eating them one by one, looking a little pitiful.
She recalled the events of the afternoon. Most of the memories were hazy, but she remembered distinctly that she had bitten Yan Hua’s gland.
Thinking of this, the carrot she was holding dropped back into the box with a “plop.”
How could this be? She and Yan Hua were going to break up sooner or later. A wave of panic swept over her. Then, Ning Chun remembered the report—her and Yan Hua’s compatibility was very low. This wild act definitely wouldn’t have resulted in a successful mark.
With this thought, Ning Chun’s heart gradually settled.
Yan Hua quickly brought her a cup of warmed milk. Ning Chun took it with both hands, said “thank you,” and lowered her head to cool it down, blowing hard on the milk.
“You drink this first. I’ll cook you a bowl of pasta.”
Ning Chun didn’t reply. Yan Hua thought she was being difficult.
But she absolutely would not let her drink cold milk. Her stomach was empty, and drinking something cold would definitely hurt it.
Ning Chun held the cup, sipping the milk slowly until the whole cup was empty. Her hunger was gone, but she still felt an uncomfortable emptiness.
Just as she was considering sneaking out for a late-night snack, a steaming hot plate of black pepper beef pasta was placed on the table.
Ning Chun pushed aside the empty cup and box, half-squatting in front of the table. She leaned over to smell it and exclaimed excitedly, “It smells so good! Your cooking is actually this good? I’m going to eat it all.”
She picked up a fork and began to eat heartily. Yan Hua sat beside her, keeping her company.
Watching her eat one forkful after another, Yan Hua couldn’t help but wonder if it was really that delicious.
Yan Hua didn’t cook often, and what she made, she considered edible but far from delicious. Ning Chun must have been starving.
As she watched Ning Chun eat, she brought up what happened that night in a conversational tone, though her expression was a little unnatural. “This was an accident, of course, but it’s also a marital obligation. I have nothing to say about it, but you also have to help me during my sensitive period.”
Ning Chun picked up the last forkful of pasta, eating everything on the plate.
“You also said before that you’d be responsible for me. Since you’re not speaking, I’ll take that as you agreeing.”
Ning Chun put down her fork, looked at Yan Hua’s moving lips, and suddenly realized something was wrong.
Yan Hua also looked at her in shock, her finger pointing at Ning Chun’s right ear. “Ning Chun, your ear is bleeding.”
A warm liquid seemed to be seeping out of her ear. A flash of white light exploded in her mind, her ears rang, and her head began to ache.
She collapsed to the floor, clutching her ears in pain.
It wasn’t until she was taken to the hospital that Ning Chun fully realized she was deaf. She couldn’t hear anything in either ear, and it felt like she was being pricked with needles.
Yan Hua held her hand tightly, using a clean cotton cloth to press against her ear with her other hand. Her eyes were red, and she nearly teared up several times.
Ning Chun lay on the mobile hospital bed as staff pushed her quickly toward the operating room. Yan Hua stayed with her the whole time, speaking to her along the way, but Ning Chun could only turn her head to look at her because she couldn’t hear a single word.
Kan Yu, who had just finished her rounds, tiredly closed her file. Before she could put her pen in her chest pocket, she saw Yan Hua rushing past.
“Cousin-in-law, what is she doing here?” Then she looked closer. Oh my god, wasn’t the person being pushed into the operating room her beloved cousin?
All her sleepiness vanished, and she was wide awake.
Kan Yu sprinted toward the operating room, but she was a distance away. By the time she got there, Ning Chun had already been wheeled in.
“Cousin-in-law, what happened to my cousin? Why is she at the hospital in the middle of the night?”
Yan Hua clenched her still-shaking hands and told her about Ning Chun’s deafness and bleeding ears. “This can be cured, right? I didn’t mean to push her.”
Yan Hua thought her push caused Ning Chun to hit her head on the floor, which led to the injury.
But Ning Chun had a very strong physique and was more resilient to falls than an ordinary person. How could a simple push break her like this?
Kan Yu immediately saw the problem. “You pushed my cousin from the front, so she should have landed on the back of her head. How did her ears get injured?”
The atmosphere became heavy for a moment. Yan Hua thought about it. Kan Yu was right, but she was still suspicious of herself. “Could it have been the shock from the fall?”
Kan Yu pulled her to sit down, reassuring her, “Cousin-in-law, don’t worry. Our hospital’s doctors are very skilled and experienced in surgery. Cousin will definitely be okay.”
“Oh, right. Cousin Ning Qing contacted me today, saying a critically ill patient was brought to our hospital and asked me to take good care of her,” Kan Yu said, chatting aimlessly to help calm Yan Hua’s nerves.
“Cousin-in-law, you have no idea. When that patient was brought in, her bl00d pressure was extremely low. She almost didn’t make it and is still in the ICU. She’s so young, maybe high school age. She has so many needle marks on her arms. I wonder who abused her.”
Kan Yu paused to catch her breath. “This little girl didn’t have any family with her when she arrived, but she has a strong will to live and is fighting to hang on.” She looked at Yan Hua’s facial features, then compared them to the girl she remembered. “Speaking of which, Cousin-in-law, you look a little like that little girl.”
At first, Yan Hua didn’t pay much attention, just listening quietly to what Kan Yu was saying. But the more she listened, the more alarmed she became. Her lips trembled. “What’s the name of this girl you’re talking about?”
Kan Yu pursed her lips. “Cousin-in-law, this patient came through an encrypted channel, and her information is confidential. I only saw her from a distance.”
Yan Hua seemed to have an idea. She took out her phone, searched for a photo, and zoomed in to show Kan Yu. “Look at this picture. Is she the same person you’re talking about?”
The girl in the photo was wearing a pink dress, her hair was tied in pretty braids with a bow, and she was smiling happily.
She was identical to the person lying in the ICU.
Kan Yu froze for a moment after seeing the photo. “This… this is…”
Yan Hua choked up. “She’s my sister. Her name is Yan Qingqing.”
“I can’t let you see her, but I can tell you she’s being protected and is relatively safe now.”
Yan Hua cried sadly, and Kan Yu started to question everything. How could it be such a coincidence?
“Why don’t you go take a look outside the monitoring room? I’ll watch over Cousin here,” Kan Yu, as a medical professional, could understand the feelings of a patient’s family.
But that was all she could do. She had no authority to violate the rules and wouldn’t dare to.
Yan Hua hesitated for a moment, ultimately choosing to go see her sister.
Two hours later, the “In Surgery” light finally went out. Kan Yu was propping up her chin with one hand, constantly dozing off. She had been called away by her department several times during that time and was really at her limit.
The surgery was very successful, and Ning Chun was transferred to a VIP single-patient room.
The lead surgeon came out and saw Kan Yu, assuming she was there to learn. He urged her to go rest, saying she’d have plenty of opportunities in the future.
Kan Yu just grinned. “I’m the patient’s family.”
“Family, huh? Then I have to tell you a few things. The patient’s right ear was severely damaged. Although the surgery was very successful, it can only recover to about 70 or 80 percent, which won’t affect daily life.” After explaining the situation, the doctor continued, “Her injury is quite severe. I believe it was caused by a sudden blast of high-pressure air that caused extracranial trauma. Your family member is unusual.”
Kan Yu could only offer a dry laugh. She didn’t know how the injury happened. “I’ll have to trouble you with the follow-up check-ups. You should go and rest now.”
After a long night, dawn had broken.
Kan Yu first messaged Ning Qing, then called her. Luckily, it was a workday, and Ning Qing answered quickly.
“You need to be mentally prepared for a few things.”
Ning Qing had a bad feeling. “Don’t tell me something’s wrong with the one in the ICU.”
Kan Yu sat by Ning Chun’s bed, seeing her head wrapped tightly, especially her ears, which looked like white spheres. “Not exactly.”
“Spit it out, I have to get to work.”
Kan Yu held back a yawn. “I suggest you come to the hospital.”
Half an hour later, Ning Qing stood in the hospital room with her arms crossed, her expression unreadable. She gritted her teeth and said, “Does your hospital have a yearly plan? I’ll get her a membership. From now on, don’t contact me if something happens, just treat her.”
