- Chapter 9 - What Does She Really Want?
The Qin Family finally managed to bring the rice back before sunset. As soon as they stepped through the door, Qin Yang rushed inside without even putting down her things. When she’d left at noon, Wen Jin’an had just started running a fever. She was anxious to check on her.
Qin Yang couldn’t shake her worry. If she hadn’t been concerned about arousing Liu Yue’e’s suspicion, she would have returned to check on Wen Jin’an much sooner. Pushing open the door, she noticed the rose-scented pheromone in the air wasn’t as strong as before.
Qin Yang breathed a small sigh of relief.
Hearing the door open, the woman on the bed flinched, likely guessing who it was. She slowly opened her eyes.
Qin Yang approached, her heart softening as she gazed at Wen Jin’an’s pale face. Her voice softened as she asked, “Are you feeling better?”
A flicker of wariness flashed in Wen Jin’an’s eyes, but she quickly concealed it behind lowered lashes. “Yes, thank you.”
Qin Yang waved her hand dismissively. “Don’t mention it. It’s the least I could do. If you feel unwell, you must tell me. I’ve learned how to use pheromones to soothe…”
Before she could finish, Wen Jin’an’s eyes darkened.
Qin Yang immediately caught the resistance in Wen Jin’an’s eyes. She gritted her teeth inwardly, realizing that the more she tried to explain, the more complicated things became. Why did I have to bring up the one thing she’s sensitive about? she thought, inwardly frustrated. The girl is easily embarrassed, and she was just starting to soften toward me. Why did I get carried away?
She cautiously glanced at Wen Jin’an, pondered for a moment, and then hesitantly said, “Don’t overthink it. I didn’t have a Kunze before, so I wasn’t very good at releasing pheromones. But I’ve learned some techniques this afternoon…”
So she still wants to mark me after all.
The forced smile on Wen Jin’an’s lips nearly faltered. She clenched her fists, barely managing to keep her voice steady. “I’m fine. You don’t need to worry.” With that, she closed her eyes and leaned against the headboard, her face showing clear signs of exhaustion.
Qin Yang blinked, her gaze lingering on Wen Jin’an for a moment before shifting away.
The Female Lead genuinely looked exhausted. Qin Yang sighed inwardly, only then noticing the roasted chicken at the head of the bed. It was exactly as she had left it at noon.
The Female Lead hadn’t touched a single bite.
Is she still wary of me?
The thought made Qin Yang’s brow furrow deeply. The Original Host’s family had abused the Female Lead’s body to this state, and now, during her Rainfall Period, she couldn’t afford to skip meals and neglect her nutrition.
“Don’t you like it?” Qin Yang asked.
Wen Jin’an slowly opened her eyes, understanding the question. She shook her head. “I’m not hungry.”
The person who had left the chicken at noon had hurried away, leaving Qin Yang puzzled. If their sole intention was to sell her, why bother fattening her up first?
Or perhaps they feared she might die from mistreatment, lowering her market value.
Wen Jin’an sneered inwardly.
“How can you not be hungry? You need to eat something, especially during this time. The physician said your body needs nourishment,” Qin Yang insisted earnestly.
Whether she was trying to gain the Female Lead’s favor or not, she would have done the same for any stranger in such a weakened state. And Wen Jin’an was far from a stranger.
Qin Yang instinctively considered Wen Jin’an one of her own.
She was about to urge her again when a barrage of curses interrupted her, the words catching in her throat…
“My chicken! Which godforsaken thief stole my chicken?! Ah… if I find out who it was, I’ll fight them to the death!”
Liu Yue’e’s curses were deafening, as if she wanted the entire neighborhood to hear.
Qin Yang frowned, having anticipated Liu Yue’e’s outburst. This commotion was disturbing the Female Lead’s rest. She instinctively glanced at Wen Jin’an. The live chicken remained in the clay bowl by the bed. With the Female Lead’s intelligence, she must have already guessed that Qin Yang had roasted the chicken—and that this was the very one.
What will she do?
“I…” Qin Yang began, opening her mouth to speak.
Bang! Bang! Bang! A series of violent knocks suddenly echoed, accompanied by Liu Yue’e’s harsh voice: “Damn fox spirit! Did you steal my chicken? Open the door, you b1tch!”
Bang! Bang! Bang! The knocking resumed.
Qin Yang’s heart leaped in alarm.
Fvck! Liu Yue’e actually suspects the Female Lead! How could I forget the cannon fodder’s law of constantly courting death? In the plot, the Qin Family is always courting death, tormenting the Female Lead, and blaming her for every little thing. How could they possibly miss the chance to accuse her of stealing a chicken?
Damn this plot! How could I overlook this?
There was no time for further thought. First, she had to hide the chicken. If Liu Yue’e couldn’t find it, she’d have nothing to say.
Qin Yang glanced at Wen Jin’an, then, without bothering to explain, stepped forward and picked up the roasted chicken. The Original Host’s room was small and bare; the safest place to hide it was her personal storage space.
But… do I have to do this in front of the Female Lead?
When a chicken vanishes into thin air, what would the Female Lead think of me?
It was obvious she’d assume I was a demon.
The dilapidated door creaked under Liu Yue’e’s furious pounding. Qin Yang gritted her teeth, turned her back, and mentally stowed the roasted chicken into her personal space.
Just then, the door burst open, and Liu Yue’e stormed in, her face livid.
Qin Yang stepped forward, blocking Liu Yue’e’s line of sight to Wen Jin’an.
Liu Yue’e, being short, found her view completely obstructed. Frustrated, she cursed, “Get out of my way, you little brat! I’ll beat that damned fox spirit to death today for stealing my chicken!”
Liu Yue’e planted her hands on her hips, ready to fight Wen Jin’an to the death.
Qin Yang’s expression darkened. While she didn’t want Liu Yue’e to know she had roasted the chicken herself, she couldn’t let the Female Lead take the blame. All her efforts that day would be for nothing.
“Don’t talk nonsense,” Qin Yang snapped. “Jin’an is too sick to even get out of bed. How could she possibly steal your chicken?”
Liu Yue’e bristled at this. Qin Yang was still defending Wen Jin’an even now? She lost all restraint, pointing behind Qin Yang. “If she can’t get out of bed, then her lover must have stolen it! You’re completely bewitched by her, ignoring your own mother’s words!”
Liu Yue’e cursed and shoved Qin Yang, something she would never dare to do under normal circumstances. But with one of their two egg-laying hens missing, the family’s livelihood was at stake.
After pushing and shoving for a while, Qin Yang remained unmoved. Liu Yue’e threw herself to the ground and began wailing hysterically: “You ungrateful wretch! Why did I ever give birth to such a disobedient daughter…?”
This was one of Liu Yue’e’s favorite tactics.
Qin Yang closed her eyes briefly and said sternly, “You need evidence to back up your claims. Apologize immediately for slandering Jin’an!”
“You…” Liu Yue’e sputtered, her fake tears drying up. She glared at Qin Yang in disbelief, unable to comprehend how Qin Yang could remain unmoved even after Wen Jin’an’s lover had stolen their hen.
What kind of bewitching potion had that vixen Wen Jin’an fed Qin Yang?
“I’ve let your baseless accusations against Jin’an slide before, but this time you must apologize,” Qin Yang insisted.
Seeing Qin Yang remain relentless, Liu Yue’e finally regained her composure. Truth be told, she wasn’t even sure who had stolen the chicken. Since Wen Jin’an was the only one home that day, she had instinctively assumed it was her.
Now, a flicker of doubt stirred within her, but the thought of apologizing to Wen Jin’an sent her spiraling back into her old tricks.
“Oh, what sins have I committed? Even my own daughter sides with outsiders to bully me! What a wretched fate…”
Qin Yang frowned, her mind racing to find a way to get Liu Yue’e out. Wen Jin’an was still in her Rainfall Period and needed rest. How could she possibly rest with this commotion?
After crying for a while and failing to achieve the desired effect, Liu Yue’e stopped and glared up at Qin Yang.
This unfilial daughter! Even with her own mother in such a state, she remained unmoved. Liu Yue’e tried to stand, but her legs buckled from sitting too long.
She expected Qin Yang to help her up, but Qin Yang merely crossed her arms, watching her like a stranger. There was no hint of assistance in her expression, only undisguised disdain. At that moment, Liu Yue’e finally realized Qin Yang was determined not to help her.
Meanwhile, Wen Jin’an had been staring intently at Qin Yang ever since Liu Yue’e burst into the room. Though she couldn’t see Qin Yang’s expression, she had expected her to do what she always did: shift all the blame onto Wen Jin’an, then join Liu Yue’e in verbally and physically abusing her. This time might be even worse, considering the chicken was far more valuable than Wen Jin’an herself.
To her surprise, Qin Yang silently shielded her behind her back and demanded that Liu Yue’e apologize to her.
Wen Jin’an gazed at Qin Yang’s slender figure, her emotions a tangled mess.
What does she really want?
Anyone can keep up an act for a day or two. I refuse to believe Qin Yang can maintain this charade for long. After all, she has no patience whatsoever, does she?
And what about that chicken…?
Wait a minute.
Wen Jin’an’s expression froze. If she remembered correctly, Qin Yang had just taken the chicken over when Liu Yue’e barged in. There hadn’t been any time to hide it, yet now Qin Yang stood with her arms crossed.
Where’s the chicken?
Wen Jin’an’s heart pounded with silent shock as she discreetly observed Qin Yang’s every move.
