When Ling Jiao carried Shen Yuwei into the school infirmary, Shen had already lost consciousness.
She lay weakly on the bed, her face pale and bloodless. Because the patient was an Omega, the school nurse took the situation very seriously. She ran a full examination before finally relaxing.
“She has a mild concussion,” the nurse said. She tapped a vial, prepared the medication, and set up an IV drip. “How did she get hurt?”
The nurse recognized Shen Yuwei. She was one of the most admired students at Huayang High School, known for her academic excellence and stunning looks. Though proud, she was always polite and kind. The nurse had heard some rumors about recent troubles in the Shen family, but she hadn’t expected someone to actually harm Shen Yuwei so soon after everything had happened.
An Omega should be treated with care. An Omega with power and status should be protected even more.
Was the Shen family really planning to do nothing about this?
As far as the nurse knew, they hadn’t officially cut ties with her.
She couldn’t make sense of it.
Ling Jiao pulled over a chair and sat beside the bed, quietly watching Shen Yuwei. There were no other patients in the infirmary. Her mind, which had been clouded with rage on the way here, began to clear.
She thought carefully about what had led to this, especially the scene she had witnessed when she found Shen Yuwei. It didn’t take her long to reach a conclusion.
Shen Yuwei had been tricked into going to the library. For some reason, she walked into a third-floor meeting room that was no longer in use. Someone had set a water-filled metal basin on top of the bathroom door.
When she pushed the door open, the basin fell right on her. The freezing water soaked her from head to toe. Being an Omega, she was already physically fragile, and the impact likely knocked her out immediately. If she had stayed conscious and tried to escape, the door had been locked from the outside.
She might have had a chance to call for help, but she didn’t.
She didn’t even try to reach out to Ling Jiao.
Ling had called her three times. Maybe Shen had finally decided to answer the third call, but her phone must have shorted from the water and shut down. In the end, the call never truly went through.
After mentally narrowing down the list of suspects, Ling Jiao made up her mind. They were going to pay for what they did.
At that moment, Wan Qing rushed in behind her. She was still catching her breath when Ling Jiao calmly asked, “Does the library have surveillance cameras?”
“I think it does,” Wan Qing replied, unsure.
Ling Jiao gave a small smile. “They’re probably broken.”
Wan Qing stared blankly.
She hadn’t even checked yet. How could Ling Jiao know?
Was her boss so smart that she could see the future?
“Go to the school administration and tell them to show you the footage. If they refuse, call the police.”
“Consider it done.” Wan Qing’s voice was firm.
As Ling Jiao’s long-time sidekick, Wan Qing was more than capable. No matter what, she would get it done.
In the original story, the two of them had schemed together and done a lot of shady things. Wan Qing had always been the mastermind behind the scenes.
While they spoke, the nurse remained silent nearby.
In the past, Ling Jiao had always given people the impression of being a troublemaker. But today, she was completely different. The nurse couldn’t help but feel a little surprised.
Just then, her vision darkened. Ling Jiao had stepped in front of her desk, blocking her view.
The nurse looked up.
Ling Jiao lowered her eyes and said calmly, “One hundred thousand. I need your help.”
Shen Yuwei woke up in the afternoon.
News of her injury in the library had already spread across the entire school. Many students speculated about what had happened, adding their own dramatic twists. But very few came to visit her.
At a recent banquet, the head of the Shen family, Shen Zhiwen, had publicly declared that from that moment on, Shen Yuwei would only be considered an adopted daughter. The family would cover her tuition and living expenses at Huayang High School, but she would no longer be involved in any of their business affairs.
To them, she no longer held any strategic value.
And so, almost no one came to see her.
No one at all.
Except for Ling Jiao. She had stayed by her side all afternoon in the infirmary. An Alpha who had injured himself during basketball practice came by briefly to check on her, but he left soon after his wounds were treated.
When Shen Yuwei finally opened her eyes, Ling Jiao leaned closer and asked, “Do you feel a little better? Does your head still hurt?”
“Are you hungry? What would you like to eat? I can have someone get it for you.”
Shen Yuwei’s eyes slowly began to focus. Her voice was hoarse.
“Where am I?”
“The school infirmary,” Ling Jiao replied.
She gently touched Shen’s forehead. “You had a pretty bad fever earlier. It’s gone down now. If it hadn’t, you might’ve turned into a little fool.”
She said it lightly, trying to tease.
Her smile was warm and close.
Shen Yuwei furrowed her brows slightly and mumbled, “I won’t become a fool.”
“Yes, yes, of course you won’t,” Ling Jiao said with a half-smile. Seeing Shen Yuwei still had the strength to argue, she was about to laugh, but her expression quickly turned serious. Her voice lowered.
“You were hurt. Why didn’t you call me?”
A faint blush rose on Shen Yuwei’s pale cheeks.
She avoided Ling Jiao’s gaze, unable to meet her eyes.
It was because she had remembered what happened when she got drunk. She felt so ashamed she couldn’t bear to face Ling Jiao, and with no one else to turn to, she had thought that if she just waited it out, she might eventually be able to call for help and get out on her own.
She never expected her Omega body to be this weak.
At the time, as the warmth drained from her body, Shen Yuwei truly thought she was going to die. In that moment of despair, she felt more fragile than ever.
Ling Jiao tucked the blanket around her and said gently,
“Don’t carry everything alone. I told you, when I said I would be your sister, I didn’t mean it casually. You can rely on me.”
“Are you hungry? Want something to eat?”
Shen Yuwei shook her head.
Ling Jiao stood up, poured her a glass of water, and sat back down to help her drink. Just then, Guan Qing rushed into the infirmary, sweating and breathless.
“Yuwei, are you alright?” she asked anxiously.
She pushed Ling Jiao aside, filled with guilt.
“It’s my fault. I came too late.”
“The moment I saw the news, I rushed over. I’ve already called the police on the way here. Don’t worry, those who hurt you will be punished. They won’t get away with it!”
Shen Yuwei’s eyes remained calm, showing no trace of gratitude.
Ling Jiao immediately frowned at Guan Qing’s self-righteous speech.
“If you really cared, you wouldn’t show up hours after Yuwei got hurt,” she said sharply.
“Wasn’t there school today? If you weren’t here, then where were you? Your fiancĂ©e was injured and you didn’t come right away. And you showed up empty-handed too. Not even a bottle of water or some easy-to-digest food.”
Ling Jiao let out a short laugh.
“You call that concern? I think not.”
Guan Qing turned back and glared at her.
“Watch your mouth! I wasn’t at school today.”
Ling Jiao raised an eyebrow.
“Then where were you? Name the place, the time, and who you were with.”
Guan Qing froze. Her eyes flickered slightly before she replied,
“I was at the office.”
Ling Jiao dragged out her next words with a teasing tone, circling them with playful suspicion. It made Guan Qing visibly uneasy as she frowned at her, feeling cornered.
The school nurse walked over and said in a low but firm voice,
“The patient needs rest. If you want to argue, take it outside. Both of you, out now.”
Guan Qing turned back to look at Shen Yuwei with a reluctant expression.
“Yuwei…”
She glared at Ling Jiao, who stood her ground without budging.
“Didn’t you hear the nurse? Yuwei needs rest and you’re still shouting. Do you even care about her at all?”
That was a clever twist, trying to blame someone else.
Ling Jiao took a step toward the door, but before she could leave, Shen Yuwei’s soft and weak voice called from behind her.
“Wait.”
Guan Qing froze. Her heart leapt with hope.
She must be asking me to stay!
This awful person can finally get out!
But what Shen Yuwei said next caught her completely off guard.
“Jiejie,” Shen Yuwei said softly, using the affectionate word for “older sister.”
“I’m a little thirsty.”
For the first time, she hadn’t called out to Guan Qing. Stunned, Guan Qing turned around, wide-eyed, as if she had been struck. Her face paled and darkened all at once as she stared at Shen Yuwei’s exhausted but calm expression.
Ling Jiao, like a proud rooster, straightened her back and walked back in with elegance and composure.
