The Second Son of The Marquis Runs Away from Home ~ Lacking Talent, He Abandons Everything and Becomes an Adventurer ~ - 166
Chapter 166: Mid-Boss
The Tower to Heaven, tenth floor…
Just before the Dragon Golem, camouflaged as a pillar, could exhale its breath, Aria slammed its lower jaw upward with her warhammer, War Hammer.
As the Dragon Golem recoiled, its neck extended, Aria leaped and severed its head, then stabbed its body to pierce the core within.
Immediately afterward, Shadow Stalkers emerged from the walls and ceiling, but Shurin swiftly shot down each one with arrows made of wood and water.
“…Looks like we’re safe for now.”
Even though I sensed no more presence of monsters nearby, I kept my sword in hand and muttered. As I watched the Dragon Golem turn into a magic stone, I couldn’t help but feel the annoyance of this dungeon once again.
“These guys are the traps on the lower level, huh?”
Golems camouflaged as pillars and walls with elaborate decorations were indeed a nuisance, not because of their combat abilities, but because their presence was undetectable until they moved.
While it was possible to sense monsters like Lords and Generals, these Golems couldn’t be detected until the last moment. That’s why we had to be more cautious than usual.
Still, we had made it this far in a short time thanks to Shurin. Without her, it would have been doubtful if we could have made it this far even in a day.
“Berk, that.”
“…Looks like we’ve arrived.”
As Aria pointed out, I saw a particularly large door ahead. As we approached, we saw a sculpture of a giant holding something on top of a pile of people, with the words “Bearer of the Foundation” written on the door.
“This room… feels different from the others.”
“Yeah, this is what we call a mid-boss room.”
Apart from the boss-level monsters, mid-boss rooms where other monsters wouldn’t appear were basically located only at the farthest end. However, in some large-scale dungeons, there were rooms where more powerful monsters than usual would appear every ten floors.
Monsters equivalent to the bosses appearing in the middle of the dungeon, abbreviated as mid-bosses, were one of the obstacles that challengers of large-scale dungeons faced.
“It seems there’s no change here for now.”
Normally, monsters appearing on the lower levels would be Ogres or Trolls, which were equivalent to Lords and Generals. Mid-level monsters like those should appear from the middle layers. However, since the Gairons appeared from the lower level and sensed something amiss, they turned back before reaching the mid-boss room, so we didn’t know what was going on.
“Let’s take a short break. We’ll defeat the mid-boss after ten minutes. How’s that?”
“No objections.”
“Me neither.”
“Got it.”
—
Taking a deep breath, I opened the door. Beyond the creaking sound lay a stark hallway.
However, in the center of that hallway lay the giant skeleton sprawled on the ground, surrounded by hundreds of stacked corpses.
As we entered, the corpses began to gather towards the giant skeleton, piling up to form a mountain around the giant bone.
From the mountain of corpses emerged a massive white hand. Rising like an undead crawling out of a grave, what stood up wasn’t just a Bone Golem, as one might have initially thought, but something with a density and malevolence far beyond that.
“So, this is the first mid-boss, ‘Dyvolus of Martyrdom.'”
The glowing red eyes from its enormous eye sockets locked onto us…
