The Second Son of The Marquis Runs Away from Home ~ Lacking Talent, He Abandons Everything and Becomes an Adventurer ~ - 5
Chapter 5: Adventurer Berg
The Grushio Continent, ruled by the Clangrulz Union, had once been called the “Magic Continent” and was shunned due to the abundance of dungeons and numerous monsters compared to other lands.
However, over time, colonization advanced, trade of high-quality magic stones and items obtained from dungeon exploration thrived, and with the help of adventurers—reckless souls who aimed to rise with their own strength—the continent had now become the forefront frontier of adventurers.
In one of the many dungeons on the Grushio Continent, a secret battle was unfolding.
“Buwoooaaahhh!”
A monster with a muscular body around 3 meters long and the head of a bull, a Minotaur, swung down a massive battle axe.
The swinging axe approached the young man standing before it, seemingly intent on crushing him, but the young man narrowly dodged it and gripped his small sword and hand axe tighter.
The young man continued to evade the swinging axe, and as the Minotaur raised its axe again, he swiftly stepped in, slipping through the gap between its legs. In an instant, he sliced its ankle.
As the Minotaur knelt forward, the young man immediately thrust his small sword deep into its massive back. With the fluidity of water, he used the hilt of the sword as a foothold to climb up. Gripping the Minotaur’s horn, he raised his hand axe high.
And then, using a knife he drew from a hook on his belt, he plunged it into the Minotaur’s eye socket.
“Gaaahhh!?”
The Minotaur let out a painful cry as it tried to shake off the young man and throw him to the ground. In its struggle, it discarded its battle axe, directing its arm towards its head.
Just before its arm could grab the young man, he pulled out the axe, allowing himself to slide down its back. Then, he swiftly withdrew the small sword and disengaged.
Facing the suffering Minotaur, the young man clashed his small sword and hand axe, creating a sound. Unable to see, the Minotaur realized that the sound was coming from the person it was fighting, and filled with rage and hatred, it drowned out the pain and roared.
The Minotaur slammed both of its log-like arms into the ground. Then, its massive body leapt into the air, its arm swinging down towards the young man.
The sound of the ground shattering resonated throughout the dungeon. The young man narrowly dodged the Minotaur’s strike by a hair’s breadth. The small sword in his right arm emitted a phosphorescent magical light as he drew power from it, and with a swift movement, he swung it with force, slicing through the Minotaur’s wrist.
Although stumbling, the Minotaur ignored the pain and raised its arm again, but as it raised its arm, a thrown hand axe spun through the air and embedded itself into its palm.
“Farewell.”
Using the momentum of the thrown axe, the young man lunged into the Minotaur’s chest. With both hands gripping the small sword, he swung it along with the phosphorescent light. The Minotaur’s head bounced on the ground several times before it crumbled, gradually transforming into a magic stone.
After retrieving the magic stone and his weapons, the young man left the dungeon…
“It seems that this dungeon was a random spawn this time.”
“Yes, the boss was a Minotaur, and there were no more than three others along the way… I think they’d vanish if bronze-tier adventurers were regularly weeding them out.”
Reporting the investigation results to the Adventurer Guild in Walkria, a city often referred to as the forefront base of Grushio Continent’s colonization, the receptionist jotted down the report on paper and nodded while looking at him.
“Alright, that completes the request. I’m really grateful. Not many are willing to take on these small-scale dungeon investigations…”
“Well, most adventurers tend to go for the larger dungeons.”
Dungeons are places where magic accumulates for various reasons, and they come in different sizes. Small dungeons simply have monsters appearing, and if you regularly defeat the monsters inside, the accumulated magic dissipates, causing the dungeon to disappear. On the other hand, medium to large-scale dungeons that have existed for a long time rarely vanish. Moreover, these dungeons often contain special materials and valuable treasures like powerful magical tools and weapons.
If you’re going to risk your life, it’s better to get a bigger reward. That’s something every adventurer would think, except perhaps someone like me…
“Well then, I’m off.”
“Yes, thank you as always, Berg!”
Leaving the Adventurer’s Guild and stepping outside, I looked up at the sky, which would soon be darkening, and recalled that day.
(It’s been two years already…)
Two years had passed since the day I abandoned everything and ran away. I discarded the name of Serk Grantos, the second son of the Duke’s family, and began living as an adventurer named Berg, a bronze-tier adventurer.
Becoming an adventurer on the Grushio Continent had been quite a struggle. There weren’t many available requests, and I had to go into dungeons every day, defeat monsters, sell magic stones, and gradually learn various things. While wandering the continent, I had the constant worry that my family might catch up with me.
To avoid being defenseless when my sword broke, I started carrying multiple weapons.
After injuring my dominant arm and being saved by another adventurer, I trained to fight with my left arm as well.
Trying out different weapons and fighting styles, I eventually settled on using a small sword and a hand axe.
And so, I wandered through various dungeons, fought monsters day after day, and before I knew it, years had passed.
(I’ve come a long way…)
It had been days filled with hardships, coming close to losing my life multiple times. Yet, I liked the present where I could fight as much as I wanted without anyone blaming me and be recognized for it.
“I guess being a noble just wasn’t meant for me. It’s as simple as that.”
Chuckling at my own self-deprecation, I headed towards the inn. Little did I know, my life was about to change very soon…
