The Second Son of The Marquis Runs Away from Home ~ Lacking Talent, He Abandons Everything and Becomes an Adventurer ~ - 79
Chapter 79: Visitors from the Kingdom
The day after the reinforcements arrived, Berg continued to receive reports from Aria and the knights, including patrols and other duties.
“Berg-sama, there’s one more report…”
“What’s wrong?”
“Last night, four individuals in travel attire visited. Some were severely weakened, and others had lost consciousness. They are currently resting under the care of the medical team.”
“Travelers, or perhaps pilgrims attacked by monsters on the way?”
“They regained consciousness, so we plan to question them. However, something they muttered before losing consciousness caught our attention, prompting this report.”
“What did they say?”
“Well…”
The knight hesitated for a moment but quickly responded.
“They claimed to be from the Grants House of the Berga Kingdom.”
Those words stirred unease in Berg’s heart…
—
After hearing from the knight, Berg headed towards the room where the questioning would take place. Aria, walking alongside him, spoke up.
“Can I join too?”
“I’m not sure if I can control my emotions alone. Sorry, but if I seem like I’m about to act out, please stop me.”
“Understood.”
Approaching the room, she hesitated for a moment before opening the door.
Inside the room, four blankets were laid out, with one person seated on each. Three men and one woman.
The priest who had been looking after them noticed Berg’s entrance and nodded. The four individuals looked up, displaying surprised expressions.
… The three men were unfamiliar, but judging by the equipment laid next to them, they seemed to be knights. Their armor bore the emblem of the Berga Kingdom, with the wing and shield representing the Grants House.
And…
“Serk…sama.”
Though she was dressed in travel attire, Berg still recognized her. After all, she had served as a maid and caretaker for over ten years until he left the kingdom.
“Latina.”
Meeting her after two years, she appeared noticeably worn out. It wasn’t a look that could be attributed to what she had been through to reach this place.
(Has she always been this frail?)
Instead of anger or discomfort at seeing the changed Latina, Berg felt bewildered. The current Latina seemed like a child awaiting scolding, her eyes filled with anxiety.
“Serk-sama… No, Berg-sama.”
One of the knights adjusted his posture and turned towards them. Latina seemed unable to speak properly.
“I am Knight Harris of the Royal Knight Order. I was assigned as a direct subordinate to Lord Bardle two years ago.”
“…Why are you and the maid here?”
“Yes, knowing it’s shameless of us, we’ve come seeking your assistance, Berg-sama.”
The knights all simultaneously lowered their heads, and Latina also prostrated herself.
“Please… Please lend us your strength. The kingdom is in… Lord Bardle’s life is in danger.”
“My brother is in danger… What do you mean?”
Berg couldn’t help but be skeptical at the knights’ words. The idea that his brother, in particular, was in a critical situation was unimaginable.
“Yes, the kingdom is currently divided into two factions. There is a civil war between Lord Bardle’s royal army and the nobles who led a rebellion, aligning with monsters.”
The newly conveyed information presented another troublesome situation.
